| Secrets of the Indiana Dunes |
Okay, I'll admit it. I grew up in Chicago but had no idea of all the secluded beauty at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore.
So are you way ahead of me? Did you already know this park has 15 miles of Lake Michigan beaches--plus so many habitats it ranks 7th among national parks for plant diversity?
Coastal Living magazine says Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore is one of the nation's top 10 beaches. Yet, most visitors cluster near the parking lots. So it's easy to have a shady trail or dune ridge all to yourself.
Camp at the park's quiet spacious Dunewood Campground to see how brightly the stars and moon shine here. Or book a vacation rental or romantic B&B. The area also has art galleries, community theaters...and lighthouses within an hour's drive that are worth photographing in Michigan City and St. Joseph. |
| "Start Where You Are. Use What You Have. Do What You Can." |
You've probably heard tennis legend Arthur Ashe's advice: "Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can."
That's good advice to follow when you notice there aren't as many birds anymore in your favorite woods...or hear a new development will block access to a beach you love...or see algae choking a pond you used to swim in.
What's your best way to enjoy the Great Lakes region--and leave it beautiful for the next generation?
It took me awhile to figure out that photography is my best way to help people fall in love with places worth preserving.
That's why I appreciate Great Lakes Lakes Aquatic Habitat Network and Fund. Their genius is helping people use what they have to do what they can...for the forests, meadows, beaches, and waters they know most intimately. Read on for details. |

Congratulations to Cheryl Botham |
Last month I asked you where in the Great Lakes you go to feel renewed. Thanks so much to everyone who responded.
Your entries were entered into a drawing for a 5x7 matted print and Cheryl Botham's entry was selected. She chose this picture of the Grand Haven lighthouse at the end of a stormy day.
The 5x7 prints are sized just right to fit a breakfast nook or small office. Yet they're mesmerizing enough to refocus yourself whenever you feel stressed.

As Seen on woodtv.com |
Recently Wood TV invited us to their studio to meet news directors, editors, and their webmaster.
They asked to feed posts from my environmental blog, Great Lakes For All, from their website. They said they like how I report and analyze the issues.
If you're interested in Great Lakes environmental news, please consider subscribing to my blog. Get in on what's happening--regional water levels, Asian carp invasion, boats that run on biofuel (sometimes before the news shows up in the press). On the upper left hand of the blog you'll see a place to subscribe either to an RSS feed or to email updates.
Adding your voice to the conversation is easy. Just click on the comment link at the bottom of each post. It would be great to hear your ideas. |
