| Visit the Lights of Canada's Bruce Peninsula |
Why not reward yourself or surprise your favorite lighthouse lover with a trip to Ontario's Bruce Peninsula? You can visit 15 lighthouses or range lights on rugged Bruce Peninsula, which divides Lake Huron from Georgian Bay.
Many, such as the Kincardine Lighthouse, are easy to reach by land. Kincardine is a functional light that still guides captains to safety, yet both the lighthouse and lightkeeper's house museum are open for summer visitors. Bruce County Tourism offers details on lighthouses, lighthouse boat tours, hiking, kayaking, romantic B&Bs, galleries, and more. |
| Protect Coastal Dunes |
Visiting a protected dune area like Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore puts you in touch with deep slow growth. You feel fresh breeze. You walk on sand worn smooth by ceaseless wind and waves.
You see unique dune plants, such as the rare Pitcher's Thistle, which stabilizes dunes by sinking six-foot roots and takes up to eight years to flower. The way dune plants grow reminds me of watching a special character trait unfold in a child.
If we have grandchildren some day, I want to share my favorite dune discoveries with them. That's why I appreciate all that The Great Lakes Alliance is doing to protect ancient freshwater dunes from a big threat--sand mining. Read on for details.

When you need to feel calm, peaceful, or inspired, where in the Great Lakes do you go? I love Nordhouse Dunes National Wilderness Area, between Manistee and Ludington, Michigan. I've even camped there on snowy winter nights.
Send me a description of your favorite Great Lakes refuge, say what it does for you, and you'll be entered into a drawing for a matted 5x7 print of your choice from Great Lakes Editions.
Email me your entry and the SKU number of the print you would like at stevehuyho@greatlakeseditions.com on or before June 30, 2007. We may put entry excerpts in a newsletter or blog. If you win the drawing, we'll email you.
By the way, the 5x7 prints are sized just right to fit a breakfast nook or small office--yet mesmerizing enough to refocus yourself whenever you feel stressed. |
