Blast from the Board Laurinda Spear speaks as a parent
Samantha Hing has discovered the "Secret Garden "of music and it's in the Clubhouse at SoBe Music Institute. Her enthusiasm for the program is reflected in her voice when words like "Cool "and "Really fun" are repeated over and over again. It is as if her black and white world of the ordinary was infused with light and color and musical notes.

Samantha was warmly welcomed into this special school with open arms and was allowed to choose from an assortment of instruments. Her choice was the violin, an instrument she had never even touched. She enthusiastically announced with great pride that she can now play "See Saw" and is about to learn "Twinkle Twinkle". She said that this accomplishment is the equivalent to learning Chinese! She is indeed learning a new beautiful language, the language of music.
Samantha's favorite part of this school of light- she mentioned there is so much light in the school that they don't need electric light- are the concerts on Friday's. She loves watching her teachers play their instruments. She can dream and see what is possible after "Twinkle Twinkle".
Samantha had always wanted to play an instrument but never had the opportunity to do this. She had also loved to sing but had no one to sing with. Now she can play an instrument and sing with others like herself and all of this is possible because of the caring, accomplished, and gifted musicians who have given their precious time to this young girl. This gift of music is the greatest gift Samantha has received this summer. It is more than just learning the violin or singing with the others; this experience has given her an entire new way of seeing things. There is now music in her heart thanks to SoBe Music Institute!
(Samantha's violin teacher Sunho Kim is a faculty member of SoBe Music Institute and currently performs with the New World Symphony, is a Graduate of New England Conservatory of Music and has performed with the Aspen Chamber Orchestra and the Moscow Chamber Orchestra)

Advisor's Angle Nancy Liebman
Congratulations to the SoBe Music Institute on its inaugural summer session. The citizens of Miami Beach have another cultural feather in its cap as it hosts the Institute in one of its most historic buildings - the Carl Fisher Clubhouse. The Mayor's Blue Ribbon CANDO Committee is in full support of this cultural opportunity for children, adults and seniors.
The mission of the CANDO Committee is to reenergize the neighborhood surrounding the Bass Museum of Art and extending to Lincoln Road. This area is already the center for visual and performing arts in the city. CANDO was organized to promote housing and arts-related businesses in the neighborhood. The SoBe Music Institute is one of the newest arts related organizations to join the many cultural venues within the designated CANDO neighborhood.
We wish the Institute much success for the summer program, and are looking forward to their continuing presence at the Clubhouse until the time it will be renovated. The CANDO committee will make every effort to keep SoBe Music Institute in the neighborhood once the clubhouse renovations begin.
