 CARL FISHER LOGOGreetings!

Like Miami Beach itself, SoBe Music Institute represents many things to many people.  But above all else, the Institute is a community of artists/musicians who continue to experience the joy of music through offering world-class musical instruction to children and adults of all ages, levels and economic circumstances.  For many of the students participating in our programs it will be the first time they have experienced the world of music on such an extraordinary level.  A huge thank you to all our donors who have made programs available to low-income kids and seniors!  Again, thank you for your continuing support

Registration for the summer program will continue through this week and next.  Please join us!

The Mayor Speaks
Mayor David Dermer, The City of Miami Beach
Mayor David Dermer

"I am pleased and excited with the partnership the City has formed with SoBe Music Institute for a summer program at the Carl Fisher Clubhouse within the newly created Cultural Arts Neighborhood District Overlay," said Miami Beach Mayor David Dermer. "The SoBe Music Institute is exactly what CANDO is all about," he added.

SoBe Music Institute's success this summer will determine our future. Dreams are easy, it take the community to come together and make it become a reality, a long term commitment for our future generations.  Go back to the beginning of time, and you will find Art, Music, and Dance. Those are the fundamental building blocks that started with the cavemen and have been the cornerstones of every civilization since. It is yesterday, today, and tomorrow. It is what makes us.

This is exactly what the Mayor and the CANDO Committee had in mind when shaping the parameters of this District. Galleries and Artist will always come and go. Fundamentals and cornerstones are what define our assets.

If this program is as successful as Dr. Kievman expects, he hopes the city will continue to partner with SoBe Institute bringing this kind of programming to the residents of Miami Beach and neighboring communities year round. Mayor David Dermer was quoted as saying this is a perfect CANDO project fitting exactly what was intended.

This Summer Program is possible because SoBe Music Institute raised the required $75,000 in donations through Mystery Park Arts, a 501©3 Non-Profit Arts and Education Organization and the wonderful partnership it formed with the City of Miami Beach for the use of the Carl Fisher Clubhouse. Naturally, there is always more needed to carry on a program like this. If you have any instruments you can donate to this program or if you want to pay to sponsor an instrument, please call 205-674-9220 to make arrangements. It can mean so much more if a child can take his or her instrument home to practice. So check your closets, garages and wallets!

Please contribute to our Instrument and Computer Bank!
violinAs SoBe Music Institute begins its second summer program season, we've set a goal of providing immersion in musical education and instruction for all children, adults and seniors regardless of their ability to pay.  I'm excited to say the City of Miami Beach Commissioners granted us a space for the summer and we have raised enough funds to provide the instructions for all students.  However, as the summer program opening date approaches, we need laptop computers and instruments for the children to take home and practice in the evenings and on weekends.   remember that academic research shows that, among other things, music training helps improve language, cognitive skills and test scores for students.  Please help our mission by donating a computer, an instrument or funds to the Instrument bank.  Call 305-674-9220

markoldThis summer, one of Miami Beach's oldest buildings will be transformed by one of its newest cultural organizations into a unique place for experiencing the arts.  As a Miami Beach resident who believes strongly in both the power of arts and the value of historic architecture, I see this as a promising mix.

I have long admired the charm of the Carl Fisher Clubhouse, modestly set along a tree-lined canal in a quiet corner of the historic district.  The 1915 building, the city's first in the Mediterranean style, marks the early stage of an architectural movement that flourished in Florida's resort towns and pre-dated the art deco boom.  Together with the adjoining Little Stage Theater, the Clubhouse has the potential to be a cultural highlight in our rich historic district.

Over the coming months the historic Clubhouse will come to life once again, this time as an inviting space where professional musicians can come together with the public outside of the formal performance hall.  This "new" setting will be an environment where all segments of the public -- young or old, regardless of income -- can explore new instruments and learn the language of music.  And it will be an environment where talented performers from the nearby Miami City Ballet Orchestra, New World Symphony, and others can share their skills as instructors and mentors, and perhaps become more connected to the Miami Beach community in the process.

An educational arts institution can be a dynamic ingredient in Miami Beach's emerging "Cultural Arts Neighborhood," broadening the horizons of both children and adults, complementing our performance venues, and ultimately strengthening the area's cultural foundations.  I have known Artistic Director Carson Kievman for many years and I trust his artistic vision as well as his genuine feelings for this city.  I am very encouraged by the organization's accomplishments in the short time since his return to Miami Beach, and my hope is that the Summer Music Program may turn out to be the start of something that grows over time and serves the city well.

I commend the SoBe Music Institute advisory board, music faculty, and staff for their efforts to get to this point, and I extend sincere appreciation to the to the Miami Beach Mayor, Commissioners, and city staff who worked quickly to open the doors of the Clubhouse for the summer.  A special thank you is due to the private donors whose support will enable the musical programming to reach our seniors and low-income children without fees.
