SUFFOLK COUNTY SPCA AND TOWN OF HUNTINGTON OFFICIALS RESCUE 56 DOGS FROM HORRENDOUS CONDITIONS

Acting on a tip from Huntington Town Animal Shelter officials, Detectives from the Suffolk County SPCA responded to a home in East Northport and found numerous small dogs and puppies living in filthy conditions.  Chief Roy Gross of the Suffolk County SPCA said that when Suffolk County SPCA officers arrived at 36 Wicks Rd. own by Eileen Monroig, what they found were small-breed dogs living in feces, urine, and moldy food.  Ms. Monroig agreed to surrender the dogs to the Suffolk County SPCA but before the animals could be removed, the Commack Fire Department was called in to aerate the house so that Suffolk County SPCA and Town of Huntington Officers could remove the animals.  A total of 56 dirty and frightened dogs, including 7 puppies, were removed along with a parrot and 2 baby squirrels. The animals were transported to the Town of Huntington Animal Shelter in the Suffolk County SPCA's Mobile Animal Surgical Hospital (MASH Unit). The animals will be examined by Suffolk County SPCA Veterinarians who will determine when they are healthy enough to be placed up for adoption.

When asked, Chief Gross would not speculate on whether or not the house was being operated as a Puppy Mill, saying only that it was too early in the investigation to comment on why there were so many dogs inside the house.  Chief Gross said that the woman will most likely be charged with Animal Cruelty. Also, Chief Gross would like to thank the Commack Fire Department and the Suffolk County Police Department for their assistance.

A press conference will be held on Wednesday, May 7th at 1:00 PM at the Town of Huntington Animal Shelter, 106 Deposit Rd., East Northport.
