The Suffolk County SPCA announced today that it has rescued two more alligators; this one is from a Centerport man who said he bought them inPennsylvania.
Chief Roy Gross of the Suffolk County SPCA said that the alligators, measuring approximately 3 feet long were turned over to Suffolk County SPCA agents on the EART (Emergency Animal Response Team). Gross repeated his previous comments on keeping these reptiles in or near the home" they are not pets or companion animals, and they can cause serious injuries to people around or near them. Not only is their bite dangerous because of their sharp teeth and powerful jaws, but their mouths contain bacteria which are extremely harmful to humans." Chief Gross also said that he's concerned about the high number of reptiles turned over to the Suffolk SPCA this year (110 so far). "How many are out there that we don't know about?" Gross asked the public for help by notifying Suffolk County SPCA officers at 631-382-SPCA (7722) so arrangements can be made to surrender the reptiles instead of turning them loose in streams, ponds, or small lakes. "These animals will surely die when the cold weather arrives," said Gross. Both Gators were transported to a licensed reptile sanctuary out of state.
The Suffolk County SPCA is appealing to the public for financial help, so that we may provide the necessary medical care for the animals surrendered until they can be safely transported.
