SUFFOLK COUNTY SPCA ARRESTS BAY SHORE MAN ON CHARGES OF ANIMAL FIGHTING

 

 

            The Suffolk County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has arrested a Bay Shore man and charged him with promoting animal fighting.

 

            According to Roy Gross, Chief of the Suffolk SPCA, on Saturday July 7, 2007, SPCA agents responded to 116 Irving Street, Central Islip NY to investigate reports of chickens being kept in deplorable conditions.  Gross said the officers were invited into the home and yard to inspect the premises and they found cocks shaved and prepped for fighting. The Investigators also found a fighting rink. SPCA officers arrested Jamie Schelmety of 1426 E. 3rd. Ave., Bay Shore, NY and charged him with violating section 351 of the New York State Agriculture & Markets Law, a felony punishable by up to 4 years in prison and/or a $25,000.00 fine. Mr. Schelmety was turned over to Suffolk County Police 3rd Squad Detectives for processing.
