After Living Under A Bridge,

Helping Others Improve Their Lives

Performing Arts
Living under a bridge in the Bronx, Leona got used to being dirty. With no soap to bathe her body, she savored dirt as a second skin: something to keep her warm during the long, cold nights. For seven years, Leona was homeless, jobless and addicted to drugs.

Finally, an outreach worker found Leona and brought her to the Educational Alliance's Pride Site II, a residential addiction recovery program. From the moment she walked through our doors, she felt at home. "The counselors were wonderful. They taught me how to live again." We not only gave her a home and supported her recovery, but also helped her find employment and eventually her own apartment. After two years in recovery, Leona graduated from the program. A year later, she returned as a substance abuse counselor, helping others improve their lives, just as she did. She has been an Educational Alliance staff member for the past 15 years.
