After A Stroke, Performing on Stage Helps Her Come Alive |
Mona, a 67-year old member of our Sirovich Center, suffered a stroke last year. She became wheelchair-bound with a speech disability and began relying on an in-home aide. At the Center, she frequently sat in on the Musical Theater class and would quietly sketch portraits of the seniors in the group. Eventually, she decided to join in.
We taught Mona how to be a real performer, including acting and singing. Her speech began to improve as a result of vocal training and exercises that helped her project her voice. In addition, she became more self confident and more comfortable relating to other seniors in the class. By the end of the year, Mona felt re-energized and happy to have discovered a new creative outlet. She performed on stage (along with her aide!) in the group's final performance and she stole the show. Want to help other seniors like Mona? Our cause of the month for October is performing arts. You can support our performing arts programs with a gift or volunteer with us. You can also follow us on Twitter and like us on Facebook to get updates on the arts, all month long!
