How I Learned to Speak English |
Felipe immigrated to the U.S. from the Dominican Republic with his mother when he was 11 years old. When he came to Educational Alliance's youth development program at P.S. 140, he couldn't speak a word of English.
We gave him 1-on-1 literacy support and helped him practice speaking English through recreational activities and socializing with his peers. Our staff also encouraged Felipe to join the cast of the program's theatrical production, "Willy Wonka, Jr." He worked hard to memorize his lines, which helped him learn new words and practice the language in a creative way. After months of hard work, Felipe was cast as the lead in the play! He also became fluent in English, improved his grades in school and made new friends. Hear more from Felipe.
