Ramah Staff Member to Receive "Cool Kid Award" from ABC7

Giborei Yisrael counselor Arye Lavin, the son of MARP director Michelle Lavin, will receive next week's "Cool Kid" Award from ABC7. Featured every Thursday on Eyewitness News at 4 p.m., the Cool Kid Award "honors deserving youths who help out in the community," according to the ABC7 website.

Earlier this week, KABC reporter and Cool Kid Award host Danny Romero interviewed Arye at Ramah, where he is a Giborei Yisrael counselor. Since 7th grade, Arye has worked the special needs religious school program at Valley Beth Shalom, now called OurSpace at Etz Chaim. Many of the individuals that Arye has worked with at OurSpace are current participants in Ramah's Tivkah program, both as campers and Ezra staff, and several of them will appear in the segment on ABC7.

Rosh Giborei Yisrael Amy Mendelsohn is one of three co-teachers in whose religious school class Arye volunteers. "Arye has a huge heart and is incredibly patient with our special needs class," says Amy. "The kids are drawn to Arye, and it is a pleasure watching him connect to each kid on Sunday mornings." Three students from the Sunday class and three students from other Our Space classes are part of the Tikvah program this summer.

The Cool Kid segment will air on Thursday July 15 between 4-5 p.m. and again on Sunday July 18th between 9 and 10 a.m. The segment will also be available for viewing from the ABC7 website (http://abclocal.go.com/kabc/index) after its air dates.

We wish a hearty mazal tov to Arye for the incredible work he has done for the special needs community, and we are honored to have him as part of our summer 2010 staff!
