| Isaiah's Odd Revelation |
|
Isaiah 6 conveys the account of Isaiah witnessing heaven and seeing the Lord on His throne "high and lifted up," engulfed by His glory with the Seraphim loudly crying out, "Holy, holy, holy... the whole earth is filled with His glory!" The intensity of heaven's worship was such that the foundations literally quaked! This remarkable eyewitness encounter produced several notable results within Isaiah's life, beginning with this strange response.
Vs.5 states, "So I said: "Woe is me, for I am undone! Because I am a man of unclean lips, And I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; For my eyes have seen the King."
Why would he respond with distress, remorse and even guilt? Can you imagine a young spectator at the World Series watching an enormous home run fly over the wall and immediately apologizing guiltily to everyone around because his swing isn't as good? Certainly not. All would be in awe of the moment. Isaiah, however, witnesses the event of the ages and reacts as if expected to participate!
'Wait,' he declares in anguish, 'I am an eyewitness of heaven. I've seen the King, yet I could never accomplish this! I'm completely out of my league here...' Note also that his admitted obstacle is not that he isn't angelic or that he cannot fly or act heavenly enough... His great and recognized deficiency is simply the offering of his lips--his worship!
Instead of being in awe of the extraordinary experience, Isaiah is gripped by the revelation that, 'this is what I was born for--and neither I nor my people are even close!' (Indicating they were born for this also)
Thankfully, the account does not end hopelessly and without solution. (See Vss.6,7) ...You know, it's amazing what happens when the fire of God touches lips that are inclined to worship. Selah \o/
