Johnson City District

News Update

Greetings!

Here is a quick update on what's going on in the Johnson City District.

Buckets The Bucket List

During the first week of June, the hallway behind the Johnson City District Office was filled with five gallon buckets in a rainbow of colors. These buckets, filled with food staples to be shipped to a United Methodist Mission in Liberia, were collected and delivered by churches and individuals across the Johnson City District.

By the end of the week 56 of our churches, plus the Wesley Foundation at ETSU, were on the "Bucket List" having donated a combined total of 908 Food Buckets! The goal set by Holston Conference for our district was 250.

On Friday, June 9 a 26 foot U-Haul truck arrived to pick up our buckets. About 20 volunteers began loading the nearly 800 buckets stored at Cherokee. We quickly realized we were going to completely fill this truck, which was meant to pick up donations from other districts as well. Fortunately, we were able to locate and reserve a second truck to travel to the other districts and pick up their donatio
ns.

Loading buckets at MunseyOur truck then made it's way to a nearby storage facility to pick up medical supplies for Liberia, collected by Dr. Paul Brown, Jr. It then continued on to Munsey Memorial UMC to pick up 117 more buckets donated by Munsey members. The load had shifted enroute, and volunteers quickly unloaded toppled buckets and began the task of re-loading. A bucket brigade was formed to accomplish this task, and soon the truck was completely filled.

From Johnson City, the buckets were taken to Maryville, Tennessee, where more volunteers loaded them onto three shipping containers with supplies donated by the other twelve districts of Holston Conference. They made a stop at Lake Junaluska, NC on Monday where members of Annual Conference celebrated the spirit of generosity our churches exhibit, and with a prayer sent them on their way to Charleston, SC. The buckets' journey will continue by ship to their final destination in Liberia.  Once there, the food inside will provide life-saving nourishment for families in need.

We wish to thank the many people across the Johnson City District who helped to make this a successful project. You have once again exemplified the giving spirit of Christ.
A Note from our New DSWalter Weikel

Dear Colleagues In Ministry,

I just wanted to say thank you to all who have greeted me so graciously into the Johnson City District. It has been a serendipitous experience to recognize streets and buildings I hadn't seen since I graduated from Science Hill High School in 1980. It has also been glorious to see the mountains surrounding the area and realize I hadn't really appreciated them when I lived here 30 years ago. A lot has changed since then.

I trust I have changed as well.

In some ways I feel like the prodigal son who has returned home. There is a part of me that hopes people who knew me "back in the day" will exercise selective amnesia. I trust that my previous sins have been forgotten, or at least forgiven.

Reconnecting with old friends has been invigorating. I have also drawn energy from meeting new people who are excited about Christ and their churches. I think that is what I am appreciating about my new role more than anything else.

Experiencing the people of the district has helped me realize I can't do my job apart from you. I don't have a church. I don't have a building that belongs to "my" church. I can't really raise funds the way I've done for years. Indeed I can't do anything without you...and God.

Please be patient with me as I grow into this new role. Please pray for me just as I will pray for you. Know that I will work as hard as I can to support you in your ministry. I know that you have a challenging call. Ministry can be tough. But, I believe you have a holy calling. Let me know if there is any way I can serve you.

God bless you.

Walter Weikel
