News Update

Greetings!

Here is a quick update on what's going on in the Johnson City District.

2012 Hands-On Mission Project

After several years of putting together school kits for the conference sponsored Hands-On Mission Project, the Johnson City District has a new project in 2012 - Food Buckets. Filled with some basic kitchen staples, these 5 gallon buckets will be shipped to orphanages in Liberia.

The completed buckets will be collected at the District Office June 4-7, 2012.

Czech Mission Emphasis

Over the next two months, members of Czech Volunteer in Mission (VIM) Teams will visit all of our district churches to share the exciting news of what God is doing in the Czech Republic.

Since 2006 the Johnson City District has sent 52 VIM teams to the Czech Republic. More great mission opportunities are in store for this year: Construction, Vacation Bible School, Sports Camps and English Camps.

News from Camp
Camp Catalog
Look for this catalog in your local church for more info on camping.

Buffalo Mountain Camp and Retreat Center is gearing up for another great year of activities for all ages. The 2012 Summer Camp Catalog has been distributed to pastors, so if you don't see one at your church, ask your pastor for one. Copies are also available at the District Office.

In addition to summer activities, Buffalo Mountain is planning their annual Confirmation Retreat for March 2 - 3. Spend two days with your youth while they experience all things camp and learn more about their faith!  This retreat will cover three lessons of "Credo" confirmation resource materials  published by Cokesbury which focus on developing a relationship with Jesus Christ and living as a Christian in the United Methodist tradition.

At a recent District Clergy Meeting, Camp Director Jason Onks shared the Timber Harvest Plan with pastors. After much research and consideration, the camp entered into a contract last September with a company that will harvest timber on camp land. This agreement will provide many long-term benefits to the camp including: building of a new road that will allow safe access to hundreds of acres that were previously inaccessible; an estimated net revenue for the camp of over $160,000; and an increase in long-term property value.

Utmost care is being taken to protect the camp's streams, minimize erosion, and enhance the overall safety and usefulness of the 600 acres of land belonging to the camp.

The Future of Church Pianists is pianoin Your Hands

By Beth P. McCoy, Music Ministry Consultant

Here are three dilemmas:

1) The piano teacher has one or more students who are eager to learn to play piano and to play in church as soon as they are able, but they only have cheap keyboards on which to practice their music. The parents cannot afford the cost of the lessons and the cost of a piano. What can the teacher do?

2) Your church needs a pianist to play for worship and, despite conscientiously searching, asking and praying, hasn't yet found anyone.  What can the church do?

3) Your church has had one or more old pianos donated to it.  Usually the donations are by generous members of your congregation who no longer have room for the instrument, but that church classroom where it sits now needs to be used for hand bell practice, Boy Scouts or preschool.  The piano is overcrowding the room and not being used.  What can the church do?

Start small by eliminating meat one day per week, or challenge yourself by taking a week-long vegetarian pledge.
