THE RAGBIRDS

Live at the Verve:

Thursday, July 29 11pm
$5 cover, 21+ only

Big on rhythm, energy, and global grooves, The Ragbirds released their third album in 2009 while playing a couple hundred live shows (including a tour in Japan) and gathering descriptions along the way that ranged from "world fusion" to "astounding international eclecticism."

Railroad Earth's Tim Carbone, who produced The Ragbirds' new Finally Almost Ready describes multi-instrumentalist/fron
twoman Erin Zindle as "amazing to watch, let alone listen to. She sings, dances, and plays the violin all at the same time ... it's like she has two or three brains going." Think gypsy String Cheese with dollops of Latin, Middle-Eastern and Afro-Celtic sound.

Art Spaces, Inc. and the members of the Cultural Trail Coalition are pleased to announce that Max Ehrmann at the Crossroads, a life-size bronze sculpture by noted area artist Bill Wolfe will be installed at the corner of Wabash Avenue and 7th Street, along the Terre Haute Arts Corridor and Historic National Road US 40, at the Crossroads of America.

Max will be seated, writing, as he often did, gathering his inspiration from the vibrant life of Terre Haute. Bronze plaques containing lines from his most famous poem, Desiderata, will be embedded in the sidewalk near the sculpture and the entire poem will be mounted nearby.

Saturday Concert in the Park
(music starts at 8pm)
7th & Cherry

The Terre Haute Community Band will take a musical flight into the mysteries of outer space that have intrigued mankind for centuries.  The adventurous and curious are invited to explore the "Final Frontier" with the band at their concert on Saturday July 31st at 8:00 p.m. in Fairbanks Park. All THCB concerts are free.

John Williams "Fantasy of Flight" offers a medley of movie themes that most of the audience will find very familiar.   "E.T., the Extra-Terrestrial" and "Hedwig's Theme" from "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" represent only two of the many films scored by this award winning composer.

"Mars, the Bringer of War" is the first of Gustav Holst's seven "Planet" compositions. Holtz seemed to consider "The Planets" a progression of life. "Mars" perhaps serves as a rocky and tormenting beginning.  In fact, some have called this movement the most devastating piece of music ever written!

No exploration of the skies would be complete without a look at the romantic possibilities and no song does that any better than Hoagy Carmichael's "Stardust". The "Symphonic Suite from Star Trek" is the music from the most recent Star Trek movie, covering the early years of Captain Kirk, Spock, Scotty, etc. Arranger Jay Bocock has masterfully put the best parts of the movie soundtrack together.

A new acquisition for the band, "To Sail Beyond the Stars" by Timothy Loest was commissioned by the Illinois Music Educators Association. Loest is currently Director of Bands for the Itasca Public Schools in Itasca, Illinois.  Another selection on the playlist, "The Phantom Regiment" written by Leroy Anderson is also the name of the Rockford Illinois High School Drum & Bugle Corps.  Paul Whear is an Indiana musician who received his Masters of Music from Depauw University and has a number of compositions and arrangements to his credit including "March Onward" on the concert program.. "Sabre Dance"  by Katchaturian, "Festival Prelude" by Arthur Reed and "Spirit of Canaveral" by  Floyd Barnard round out the evening's selections.

The concerts are free and open to the public.  Click here for concert details.

CRT Terre Haute

The Crossroads Repertory Theater closes out its 2010 season this weekend with Edmund White's "Terre Haute" directed by Dale McFadden. After celebrated performances in New York and London, this play finally comes to the town that bears its name. The piece centers on prison interviews, conducted by a character based on novelist Gore Vidal (Mark Douglas Jones), of a death-row inmate, based on Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh (Drew Hampton).  The two struggle to find common political ground as one adheres to the sacredness of human life, the other to individual freedom. Set in the U.S. federal prison in Terre Haute on the eve of the execution, this riveting play invites reflection on the bombing that killed 168 people, the events that led to this heinous act as well as the ethical conflict and yet surprising attraction between two men from vastly different backgroun

These CRT performances are held in ISU's New Theater at 540 N. 7th Street - on the Downtown Arts Corridor!
