CEO Corner

Sue Stewart, CEO

What a great summer so far!  June was fantastic as hundreds-of-thousands of Girl Scouts, former members and supporters from around the world swarmed the National Mall during Girl Scouts "Rock the Mall" in celebration of our organization's 100th Anniversary.  It was a great event full of energy and inspiration.

But one doesn't have to travel to Washington D.C. to be inspired, there are always great things happening in Girl Scouts and GSGCF "Rocks All Year Long."  Articles in this issue highlight GSGCF graduates that have returned to positively impact younger girls as summer interns, teen girls who volunteered in our shops and learned valuable business skills as Junior Retail Sales Specialists, and new staff members ready to empower girls to their full potential.

We have also launched a new website with many new features and enhancements.  I encourage you to take a moment to visit us at www.gsgcf.org and post your favorite Girl Scout memory or brag on the Girl Scout(s) who inspires you.

I would like to personally invite girls entering grades 6 - 12 to spend the weekend of August 11-12 with their Girl Scout sisters, our summer interns, staff, community leaders and me on a Leadership Journey Overnight at Camp Honi Hanta.  It will be a great weekend full of fun and learning opportunities.  To register or for more information click here.

Regards,

Sue

While summer is a time of rest and relaxation, remember that Girl Scouting continues. As a troop or individually, consider the following:

Participate in the GSUSA "Girls Speak Out" contest.  Girls are invited to create a public service announcement (PSA) that inspires presidential candidates to help girls reach new heights and grow into the next generation of leaders. The contest winner gets her PSA produced professionally.  More information is available here.

Welcome

We are happy to announce new additions to our Girl Scout of Gulfcoast Florida family.  Please join us in welcoming them to our organization.

Sonya Gazdik has joined the staff as Chief Membership Officer.  Sonya comes to us with 17 years staff experience with Girl Scouts.  She was previously a Membership Specialist, and the Director of Program, Training and Volunteer Services and Membership at a sister council.  Growing up in a military family Sonya moved quite often and experienced Girl Scouts as a way to keep her connected with girls her age, in a familiar program.  She was even a Girl Scout in Athens Greece.  As an adult, she returned to Girl Scouting when she became her daughter's Daisy leader and is proud to have held leadership and service team positions for 9 years before joining council staff.  Not only does she have a background in Membership Operations she comes with 15 years of commercial property management and marketing.   Sonya has volunteered for Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Various Youth Organizations including Boys and Girl Club and Youth Sports, and until moving to the area volunteered for the USO.  She values the time and energy that volunteers bring to community, and knows firsthand the amazing things they can accomplish.  She has worked with numerous volunteer committees to help service units and councils reach the goals they set for themselves and girls.  She is proud to be a Lifetime Girl Scout member.

Lori Tomlinson came on board as the Manager of Grants and Outcomes.  She has worked in the non-profit sector for nearly 17 years in a variety of roles.  For the past 8+ years, Lori has been involved with local youth-serving organizations, including ALSO Youth, Girls Inc., and Big Brothers Big Sisters.  In her newly created position with GSGCF, Lori oversees grant research, writing, and reporting, as well as the development and implementation of outcome measurements for all programs.  Originally from Ohio, Lori holds both an undergraduate and graduate degree from Bowling Green State University.  Lori shares with GSGCF her passion for empowering girls and young women while fostering positive social change.

Kathleen Coulter has joined our council as a Girl Scout Leadership Summer Intern.  She graduated from the University of Central Florida having earned a BA with Honors in International and Global Studies. She has spent the past year volunteering as an English elementary teacher with World Teach in the Republic of the Marshall Islands. She lived on a remote outer island, population 150, without phones or Internet, stores, a doctor, or reliable transportation. Kathleen will be attending the University of Alberta Faculty of Law this fall, where she will participate in a Dual JD program with the University of Colorado at Boulder.

Kathleen was a member of an east coast Girl Scout council - joined as a Girl Scout Daisy. She moved to Naples with her family and joined Girl Scouts of Gulfcoast Florida as a Girl Scout Cadette. Kathleen was certified as a Leave No Trace trainer, council delegate for C3, representative at the 2005 National Convention Girl Congress in Atlanta, journalist for New Horizons - teen Girl Scout newsletter, and as an assistant leader for younger girl troops.  She earned her Silver and Gold Awards. In earning her Silver Award, Kathleen led a program to teach younger Girl Scouts the principles and practices of Leave No Trace, with cooperation from Collier-Seminole State Park. Kathleen also participated in the Environmental Leadership program and the Wet, Wild and Woodsy workshop. She wanted to incorporate her environmental background when she approached her Gold Award project. Kathleen coordinated a biodiversity study between Florida Gulf Coast University and the AP Environmental Science students at Barron Collier High School. She planned and helped run the program for two years, gathering data for FGCU and exposing high school students to real-life application of environmental science. The program continued for at least several years after her departure.  Kathleen is a Dr. Elinor Crawford College Scholarship Fund recipient.  In 2009, she worked at Honi Hanta as a camp counselor and last summer she volunteered at Vassaro Scout Centre in Sweden.  Kathleen is a proud Lifetime member and is excited to be working with the council!

Kallin Horne has been an active member of the Girl Scout movement for 15 years and has returned to GSGCF as a Girl Scout Leadership Summer Intern. She started out as a Brownie and became a lifetime member upon her high school graduation in 2010. Through her years as a Girl Scout she earned her Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards, and traveled abroad to London and Scotland as part of a Sister Troop exchange program.

Kallin also served as a Girl Representative to the Board of Directors, helped to initiate and serve on the Teen Board from 2007 to 2009, and was awarded the Dr. Elinor Crawford College Scholarship in 2010. Kallin has spent numerous hours at Camp Honi Honta, first as a camper then as a volunteer, then part of the kitchen staff in the summer of 2009, and finally as a counselor/arts and crafts director in 2010. She is currently a Junior at Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers, where she is working towards her Bachelors of Science in Accounting with minors in Marketing and Computer Information Systems. She works for the Office of Housing and Residence Life at FGCU as a Resident Assistant and is an active member of the Kappa Delta Sorority. Kallin plans to continue on with Girl Scouts in any way possible and is looking forward to this summer and future opportunities.

Everyone Can Help Reach Our Goal with Family Support Plan!

Product Sales

It's Cookie Dough time!

Your Cookie Dough card is your ticket to adventure!  All girls who sold 50 packages or more during the 2012 Girl Scout Cookie Program have earned Cookie Dough.  Cards were mailed directly to the home of each Girl Scout in late April and early May.  Cookie Dough can be used for shopping in the GSGCF Girl Scout shops, 2013 Girl Scout registration, day camp fees, girl leadership opportunities and summer environmental opportunities.  Juniors and older can even "bank" their Cookie Dough to be saved for approved uses in a future year.

Don't delay, though... Cookie Dough cards expire on September 7, 2012.  Any Cookie Dough that has not be spent or banked at that time will be lost.

If you have questions about Cookie Dough or need more information, please contact Shannon Allison at shannona@gsgcf.org.

SWAPS and Cards Needed

A request from a Girl Scout Volunteer...

I Need Your Help Welcoming an All Girls School

Troop leaders, I need your help welcoming approximately 150 girls at the new ALL-GIRL charter school in Bradenton, Just for Girls Academy. Let's have our girls extend a warm Girl Scout welcome with a card and a SWAP. It could be a great way to find a home for those extra SWAPS you found when you were cleaning out your troop locker at the end of this school year.

If your girls are willing to make a card this summer, you can send them to me by August 1st (address below), and I'll hand deliver the cards to the academy just before they open. What a great way to welcome this school and give them a small glimpse of the great friends they can make in Girl Scouts.

Just for Girls Academy is a free public charter school, opening in August 2012 on 21st Street East in Bradenton. The school will serve girls in grades Kindergarten through 3rd grade to start, and then they will add a grade each subsequent year through middle school. After speaking with the CEO, it was clear that this school shares so many of the Girl Scout ideals and values. They plan to focus on character development, service project opportunities, gardening, yoga, sports and even equine-assisted learning activities to foster empathy, courage, confidence, and leadership. Does this sound like Girl Scouts in the making or what?

You can send your cards and SWAPS to:

Jenni Stahlmann

2438 Stratford Dr

Sarasota, FL 34232

For more information about Just for Girls Academy, visit their website at www.justforgirls.org.

Parent End of Year Checklist

The school year is coming to an end, families are planning vacations, and your daughter's troop is wrapping up the year and preparing for the up-coming membership year.  Such exciting and busy times!

Below are some suggestions that will help you and your daughter's troop leader get a "Jump Start" for the 2012-2013 membership year:

  • Has your daughter's membership been renewed for the new Girl Scout year? It is now quick and simple! Go to www.gsgcf.org, click on register for membership, and follow the prompts. By registering online your daughter's membership will continue without lapse and she will be able to continue to participate in activities without interruptions. When your daughter "Early Birds" by the deadline she will get a patch.
  • Is your daughter "Bridging" (moving up to another grade level)? Do you know what troop she will be joining? Please check with your troop leader or call the council office to find out.
  • Have you considered contributing to the Family Support Plan? By contributing financially to the Family Support Plan you are contributing, not only to Girl Scouts of Gulfcoast Florida, Inc., but to your daughter's troop as well. The troop gets a percentage of all their donations.

Remember that a Girl Scout Leader is a VOLUNTEER and needs parental support. Please consider being part of the troop committee ~ go ahead ~ ask the troop leader what you can do to help!

Thank you for letting your daughter be a part of Girl Scouts ~ an experience of a life time!

All programs sponsored by the council have specific program outcomes so you can be sure that your Girl Scout gets the full Girl Scout Leadership Experience every time she participates. Because no girl is the same, customizing the Girl Scout experience and letting the girl choose how she participates in Girl Scouts gives her control over her Girl Scout Leadership Experience.  Each program and activity she participates in will encourage her and help her gain confidence in her skills and ability to be the girl she wants to be.
Girl Scouting builds girls of Courage, Confidence and Character who make the world a better place.  Girl Scouts of Gulfcoast Florida, Inc. is chartered by Girl Scouts of the USA and serves over 10,500 girls in ten counties including: Manatee, Hardee, Highlands, Sarasota, DeSoto, Charlotte, Glades, Lee, Hendry, and Collier.

For more information about the Girl Scouts of Gulfcoast Florida visit www.gsgcf.org.
