Through careful analysis, students will discover the persuasive techniques developed to capture a viewer's attention in order to promote a product or idea.

All classes are interactive, with guided discussion designed to encourage active observation and critical thinking.

    McMillen Health Programs

Only 1 program slot available for each date listed below. Filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

Title: Don't Give Me Any Bull
    Grades: 3-4

    1. April 21 at 9:00 - 9:45 am
    2. May 13 at 9:00 - 9:45 am
    3. May 13 at 1:00 - 1:45 pm

Youth will learn how to reduce their risk of being the target of a bully. Techniques for handling a bullying situation are presented. These techniques include naming the behavior as bullying, handling the situation in an assertive manner, leaving the situation as soon as possible and reporting the situation to an adult. Teaching young people to handle stress or anger, stand up tall, speak assertively will help them avoid becoming the target of a bully. Because most children will never be either target of a bully or the bully, health educators will also introduce the idea of being an active bystander who can impact the situation in a safe manner.

To sign up, fill out the ACELINK Request Form and fax it to 481-6949.

Mathematics for Logistics Management - April 7

Only 1 program slot available. Filled a on first- come, first-served basis.

    Content Provider: COSI Columbus
    Subjects: Math & Business
    Grades: 9-12
    Date: Monday, April 7, 2008

Logistics Management involves the planning, implementation, and control needed to ensure the efficient flow and storage of goods, services and related information. In order to meet customer requirements this flow must be effective between the point of origin and the point of consumption. Mathematical analysis provides a key source of information for managers working in this increasingly critical business function.

Dr. Knemeyer and Dr. Croxton will present real world examples demonstrating how managers use mathematics to help them make informed decisions with respect to the problems they face on a daily basis. Both professors are in the Marketing and Logistics Department at The Fisher College of Business at The Ohio State University. Dr. Knemeyer earned his Ph.D. from the University of Maryland and Dr. Croxton earned her Ph.D. from MIT.

Students should prepare questions in advance, based on the packet of information sent to the teacher.

    Human Rights in Burma

Students from New Haven Middle School and their teachers recently participated in two videoconference events about Human Rights in Burma. Global Nomads (New York) organized the event, which also included schools in Florida and Illinois.

Fort Wayne has the largest population of people from Burma in the United States, and many of them have children in local schools. The students from New Haven learned about the political conditions in Burma, the persecution of citizens, and they discussed these issues with their peers.

Four students from the program signed up to be peer tutors to the newcomers at their school after the video conferences. "They were so excited about what they learned, that they wanted to start right away," said Deb Rupp, New Haven Guidance Counselor.
