| Human Rights in Burma |
 |
|
Date: Feb. 19 & Feb. 21
Time: 9-10 am EST
Content Provider: Global Nomads Group
Grade Level: 7-12
Location: EACS Park Hill Training Center
(New Haven)
In September of 2007, hundreds of monks in
Rangoon captured the world's attention by peacefully
protesting an oppressive military regime that has
been controlling Burma for nearly 20 years. Since
then, the reigning military junta has been denounced
worldwide for the continued violation of human rights,
including confining the pro-democracy leader Aung
San Suu Kyi and imprisoning countless other
activists.
In this videoconference series, students gather to
discuss the current conditions in Burma, also known
as Myanmar, and what can be done on an
international, national, and personal level to effect
change. They also have the opportunity to interact with
pro-democracy activist Cristina Moon of the US
Campaign for Burma and come to a better
understanding of the historical buildup to the current
situation and possibilities for improvement.
Tuesday, February 19: Discuss what's going
on in
Burma today and the reaction of the international
community with two other classes. Students are
encouraged to discuss ideas for creating a better
future for the Burmese in terms of U.S. and
international policy and personal involvement. This
session is moderated by a GNG staff member.
Thursday, February 21: Students interact with
Cristina Moon, former Campaigns Coordinator for the
US Campaign for Burma, on the Burmese struggle for
democracy and hone their understanding of the
situation.
Contact me at schaufes@ipfw.edu if you'd like to
attend at Park Hill. We cannot add other
videoconference sites to this program.

Title: We've Come This Far by Faith: A Spiritual
Journey through Black History
Date: Thursday, Feb. 21, 2008
Time: 9:00 am Central Time
Format: 45 minutes with Q&A
Since the arrival of Africans in the Americas,
religious institutions and spiritual traditions have been
at the heart of African American civic, social, and
cultural life. Free and enslaved Africans brought their
own religious and spiritual traditions with them, and
adopted, adapted, and transformed Christianity.
The church not only provided spiritual strength and
guidance, but also focused on issues of social and
human justice. The familiar scenes of Rev. Dr. Martin
Luther King Jr., other ministers, and civil rights
activists leading marches to end segregation and
racial injustice are a permanent part of the American
historical memory. The role of faith and spirituals will
be highlighted from Harriet Tubman to Martin Luther
King, Jr.
This videoconference is about people, about African
Americans searching for ways to bring deeper
meaning to life while addressing the range of issue
which affect them, their families, neighborhoods, and
communities. It is an examination and an exploration
of the ways in which individual belief had shaped and
changed African American history and culture.
