Swahili Imports artisans utilize eco-friendly materials

Being GREEN comes easy to us. Even before the word gained its contemporary context, many of the African artisans in our network had a head start on using renewable, recycled and eco-friendly materials.

Take the Luo people of Kenya; their distinctive clay cooking pots and water jugs come straight from the earth under their feet, and the burnished, grass-fired finish reflects the symbiosis between this agrarian society and the African soil.

Wangari Maathai Committed to Conservation
The Green Belt Movement

Founder Wangari Maathai's 2004 Nobel Peace Prize brought significant attention to the Green Belt Movement, an organization dedicated to conserving local biodiversity, enhancing natural beauty and preventing soil erosion in Kenya. Between 1977 and 1997 alone, womens groups employed by the GBM oversaw the planting and husbandry of over 20 million exotic and native Kenyan species.

Thumb Piano Musical Instruments that Matter
Artisans Turn Trash into Tunes

Leslie found an excellent product in Burkina Faso this year:  thumb pianos made from recycled tin cans. Not only do these crafty little music-makers complement our line of
musical instruments, but they also serve as a low-cost craft for fiscally challenged artisans to create. Even better, each can converted to a musical instrument is a can that won't be cluttering the streets of Burkina Faso.

We have a variety of these recycled can thumb pianos arriving within the next few months (barring any unforeseen shipping fiascos), so make room in your collections for these eco-friendly must-haves!

Costly Deliveries Gobble Up the Green

Papa is working away on a product teleporter that will allow us to "beam" your products to you without using UPS for parcel service, but until that's complete, we're have no recourse but to continue  charging ever-increasing shipping rates.

We recently posted some friendly guidelines for understanding shipping costs in the
Customer Care section of our website. Take a look before making your next order to avoid those "Oh my gosh, I paid how much for freight!" moments.

UPS demonstrates a strong commitment to keeping their shipping traffic as environmentally low-impact as possible. To learn about their GREEN methods and the 1500-truck alternative fuel fleet UPS is calling its "rolling laboratory", click here.
