Cathedral unveils Lipski sculpture proposed for unfinished pediment
Design for Cathedral Pediment

Artist's rendering of the

proposed sculpture

Following a national search and sele ction process involving members of the wider diocese and experts in contemporary art and sculpture, Philadelphia artist Donald Lipski has been chosen to complete the pediment of the Cathedral Church of St. Paul--empty and unfinished since the original builders ran out of funds 190 years ago.

"We hoped for a proposal that would be beautiful, contemporary and bold but also harmonious with the classical design of our Greek Revival building, something that would be attractive and welcoming to visitors and that would make Episcopalians in eastern Massachusetts proud of their cathedral church," Bishop M. Thomas Shaw, SSJE and the Very Rev. John P. Streit Jr., Dean, said in a March 25 announcement.

Episcopalians to celebrate 'Pride' and Bishop Robinson on June 9
The bishops of the Diocese of Massachusetts
Bishop Robinson
Bishop Gene Robinson
invite Episcopalians from across New England to march with them in B oston's Pride Day Parade on Saturday, June 9 in honor of Bishop Gene Robinson of New Hampshire as he prepares to retire.

A reception and program will follow the parade, from 2 to 5 p.m., at the Cathedral Church of St. Paul (138 Tremont Street) in Boston, and will include music, tributes, food and fellowship.  The event is being hosted by the cathedral church as it celebrates its 100th year as "a house of prayer for all people."

"We in the Diocese of Massachusetts have such profound respect for Gene, who by his courage and faithfulness has done so much to make our church a healthier place," Shaw said.  "We want to show Gene our gratitude for the sacrifices he's made, and we want to do it in a way that makes a strong public witness that the Episcopal Church in New England truly does welcome everyone."

Ken Brooks (calorieken@gmail.com) of St. John's Church in Jamaica Plain is coordinating the Episcopal Church parade delegation.  Check June 9 under "Events" at www.diomass.org, where parade logistics will be posted as they become available.

New England elections: Three of the seven Episcopal dioceses of New England will be electing new bishops this spring: New Hampshire, on May 19, and Rhode Island and Western Massachusetts on June 2.  "We ask that you keep our sister dioceses in your prayers, that the Holy Spirit will lead them in their discernment as they elect new bishops to join in their journey and mission with God," said Bishop Suffragan Gayle E. Harris.  "We also give thanks to God for giving the church the witness and ministry of Gene Robinson, Geralyn Wolf and Gordon Scruton.  May they continue to grow in spirit and strength as they retire and enter a new stage of their ministry."

PreConfirmation Retreat 2012
Bishop Shaw meets with youth preparing for Confirmation at one of two March retreats.

April 21 through May 5, Bishop M. Thomas Shaw, SSJE and Bishop Gayle E. Harris will confirm more than 400 people from nearly 70 congregations at diocesan services to be hosted this year by the Cathedral hurch of St. Paul in Boston.

Both bishops spent time with many of the confirmands during two retreats in March at the diocese's Barbara C. Harris Camp and Conference Center in Greenfield, N.H.  "We laughed, played, prayed, worshiped and grew as a community preparing for Confirmation," Sam Gould, Director of Youth Ministry, said of the retreats, attended by 271 confirmands and their mentors.

"Bishop Tom and Bishop Gayle each were able to spend time with the confirmands and share some of their personal stories, while also inviting the confirmands to think more critically about each of their own stories as a continuation of the people in Scripture and how God is present in their lives.  We want to wish all of the confirmands well as they prepare for the day of their Confirmation and to remind them that this is the beginning, not the end, of their journey in the church," Gould said.
DYC retreat
Youth take on a teamwork challenge at last year's YLA camp week.
Diocesan youth, don't miss these leadership opportunities:
Current eighth or ninth graders are invited to consider joining the diocesan Youth Leadership Academy (YLA).  It begins with a week-long program at the Barbara C. Harris Camp and Conference Center in Greenfield, N.H., June 24-30, involving leadership development, faith formation and fun with a group of about 20 youth from across the diocese and five adult mentors, including Bishop Shaw.  After the week at camp, participants can then decide whether they want to continue with the 13-month YLA program that empowers youth to take leadership and make change in their local church community.  The program culminates with an international mission trip.  Find more information and sign-up for the week at camp here.

Current 10th or 11th graders are invited to apply to serve on the Diocesan Youth Council (DYC).  "This is a group of youth that want to have a great time while taking an active leadership role in the church now, as they serve as the voice of youth in the diocese and help coordinate the faith formation of their peers at diocesan and deanery events," Sam Gould, Director of Youth Ministry, said of the DYC.  The first application deadline to become a deanery representative to DYC is May 1; the deadline for at-large members will be in September.  (Anyone not elected by a deanery will be eligible for an at-large position without applying again.) Military visit

Bishop and clergy visit Nat'l Guard:
What started as a conversation between three diocesan clergy members abou t ways to support military service members and their families led to a March 8 visit with Bishop M. Thomas Shaw, SSJE to the Massachusetts National Guard's Joint Force Headquarters in Milford.

The visit gave the group a chance learn more about National Guard programs for service members and to discuss a range of topics:  issues faced by military families during deployment; what the military is doing to promote diversity and to prevent sexual assualt and suicide; and the need for more military chaplains.  "We need chaplains from mainline denominations," the Rev. (Lt. Col.) Paul Minor, Co-Rector of All Saints' Church in Belmont and full-time support chaplain for the Massachusetts National Guard, said.  He organized the visit with the Rev. David Sullivan, a deacon and Vietnam veteran who coordinates military outreach in the diocese, and the Very Rev. Jep Streit, Dean of the Cathedral Church of St. Paul.

"The thing that I've learned and is heartening to me is how much the Guard cares about its people," Shaw said.  Pictured above (from left) are Col. Francis Magurn, the Rev. David Sullivan, the Very Rev. Jep Streit, Bishop Shaw, Brig. Gen. Gary Keefe, Chaplain (Lt. Col.) Paul Minor, and Chaplain (Capt.) Jeremy Pickens.

Teams attending the April clinic came from St Andrew's Church in Framingham; St. Paul's Church in Peabody; the diocese's Jubilee Ministry; Christ Church in Waltham; the Church of the Holy Spirit in Wayland; and Grace Church in Medford.  Also receiving LDI coaching, at long distance, are the Episcopal Evangelism Network, The Occupied Church and the Tufts Chaplaincy.

The LDI has also been leading one-day retreats and workshops, including a day-long session on holy listening for postulants for ordination in the diocese, and a public narrative evening session for church leaders at St Andrew's Church in Ayer.

Any individuals or congregations interested in joining the LDI next year are welcome as visitors at upcoming clinics.  The LDI is a rigorous, hands-on, six-month training that aims to develop the spiritual leadership of congregations.  More information is available at
