Together Now surpasses $11 million
Campaign newsletter
The March/April Campaign Update is available here.
The Diocese of Massachusetts is now over halfway to its $20-million fundraising goal, with a little more than $11 million raised to date.  "Generous donors continue to step forward with their support, and more and more of our congregations are joining the campaign in a spirit of collaboration and renewed enthusiasm for mission, which is at the heart of our campaign," Bishop M. Thomas Shaw, SSJE writes in a just-issued campaign update.

The Together Now campaign was publicly launched in November and will fund an array of mission initiatives which include "green" grants and loans, a mission institute, congregations partnering as "mission hubs" to meet local needs, ongoing and expanded ministry programs with children, youth and young adults and renovations to the Cathedral Church of St. Paul in Boston.

Even as the fundraising continues, the campaign is bearing fruit:  First grants from the campaign's $2-million mission tithe have been designated--for a new hospital in Uganda and vocational training and health care ministry in the Diocese of Jerusalem--and congregations will soon be able to apply for matching funds for their own mission projects, with money available early next year.

Read more about the mission tithe here in the first issue of the Campaign Update newsletter, and learn how congregations across the diocese are joining the fundraising effort through collaborative campaigns and in-pew collections that are proving to be about more than just money.

"The story of our campaign is still underway," Shaw writes in the update.  "Much remains to be done if we are to reach the $20-million goal that will help us make real our vision for joining God's mission in bold and creative ways.  Please spend some time with this update, share it with others, consider the participation of your congregation and pray for this ambitious effort we've undertaken together.  I believe this campaign is one way that God is calling us forward, and the Holy Spirit is leading the way."

Diocesan community remembers

Lois Murphey

Lois Murphey
Lois Murphey

The diocesan community mourns the loss of friend and colleague Lois Murphey, who died on Feb. 25.

She served for five years as Bishop Bud Cederholm's administrative assistant before being named in 2006 as the administrator of Diocesan Convention and Council.  Her work had far-ranging reach as she supported, guided and connected the canonical, administrative and deliberative processes of the church with the people and groups responsible for carrying them out.  She will be remembered and missed especially for her dedication and high standard of professionalism, her no-nonsense ways and astute humor, and for the respect, personal kindnesses and companionship she extended to so many.  Her obituary is available here.

Bishop M. Thomas Shaw, SSJE writes to the diocesan community:  "On behalf of the diocesan staff I want to thank all of you across the diocese for your expressions of sympathy and support at the death of our dear friend and colleague Lois Murphey.  We were all especially touched by those who gathered for Lois's funeral at the monastery [on Feb. 29] to hear the reflections of her friends and family and Canon Mally Lloyd's sermon, which so beautifully captured Lois and Christ's victory over death.  It was a sad but triumphant day which the Eucharist with the brothers of SSJE so wonderfully expressed.  This is a hard time for us on the staff and the support of all of you has meant a great deal to us."

Donations in her name may be made to the Society of St. John the Evangelist, 980 Memorial Drive, Cambridge, MA 02138.

Midway through Lent's many days

Gracious Father, whose blessed Son Jesus Christ came down from heaven to be the true bread which gives life to the world:  Evermore give us this bread, that he may live in us, and we in him; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.  Amen.

Visit the "Jesus Our Brother" online art exhibit from Episcopal Church and Visual Arts (ECVA), reflect on a daily word of wisdom from the brothers of the Lent MadnessSociety of St. John the Evangelist and check in on the 2012 Ecumenical Carbon Fast (today's tip makes a connection between climate change and weather-related disasters).  All the links are collected here.

And if you haven't caught Lent Madness yet, this is a good time to get it.  Today the Round of the Saintly Sixteen started with this bracket buster:  Joan of Arc vs. Mary Magdalene. Who will win the Golden Halo?  Not Augustine of Hippo, eliminated in an early round by his mother, Monnica, and not Nicholas, bested by Evelyn Underhill.  We really do think this could be the Year of the Woman.
NewsNotes
Yard saleSpring cleaning--and shopping--for a good cause:  The Life Together young adult intern program is hosting a big yard sale on April 21, 8 a.m.- 2 p.m., at 40 Prescott Street in Brookline.  They invite donations of books, jewelry, apparel and household goods on any Monday between now and April 21 (leave items in the designated drop-off area), and shoppers to take it all away again on the day of the sale, all for a good cause.

Green woven crossSHOW time in Lowell:  An additional Sustainable Houses of Worship (SHOW) workshop has been added to the schedule on March 24 at St. Anne's Church in Lowell, for congregations applying for Green Improvement Grants (applications due April 22) and anyone interested in learning more about energy efficiency at church.  Read more about the grant application process here and register for the March 24 workshop here

LDI trains 12:  On March 7 the Leadership Development Initiative (LDI) in the Diocese of Massachusetts hosted its first clinic on team building at St. Peter's Church in Weston.  This clinic was a follow-up to the January LDI training at which 12 congregations and faith-based teams launched local justice projects.  The teams that attended the clinic included:  St Andrew's Church in Framingham; St. Paul's Church in Peabody; Jubilee Ministry; Christ Church in Waltham; the Church of the Holy Spirit in Wayland; and Grace Church in Medford.   LDI is also offering long-distance coaching for the Episcopal Evangelism Network, The Occupied Church and the Tufts Chaplaincy.

LDI is a rigorous, hands-on, six-month learning lab that aims to develop the spiritual leadership of congregations.  More information is available at www.diomassleads.org.  Churches interested in learning more about LDI may contact Duncan Hilton, Program Director, at duncan@diomassleads.org.

Remembering Oscar Romero:
The Church of St. Luke/San Lucas (201 Washington Avenue) in Chelsea, at the request of the El Salvadoran Consulate in Boston, will host the consulate's official commemoration of the 32nd anniversary of the martyrdom of Archbishop Oscar Romero on Saturday, March 24 at 6:30 p.m.  Bishop Gayle E. Harris will be the celebrant, with the Rev. Edgar Gutierrez-Duarte, Vicar of St. Luke's/San Lucas, preaching and the Rev. Ricardo Avila, Urban Resident at St. Mary's Church in Dorchester, assisting.  A reception and presentation about Romero's life will follow the service, in the church hall.  All are welcome.  "This will be the first of a number of celebrations and important for St. Luke's/San Lucas as we welcome the whole Salvadoran community," Gutierrez-Duarte said.  The day will do double duty, he said, as St. Luke's/San Lucas members also will use the occasion to meet with partners from St. Paul's Church in Lynnfield to plan a joint mission trip to El Salvador.

Esperanza Academy"Something beautiful": It started in the summer of 2008 when a busload of incoming fifth-grade girls from Esperanza Academy in Lawrence arrived at St. Peter's Church-on-the-Canal in Buzzards Bay for a visit.  The church's Mary and Marthas Women's Group (the M&M's) took them for a picnic and seaside walk--a first for many of the girls--and sent them home with mementos and M&M's candy.  They've been visiting one another every year since, with the M&M's making school visits, knitting hats and scarves for the girls in their yellow and purple school colors and remembering their birthdays and other holidays, and the girls trekking down to Buzzards Bay for town tours, afternoon board games and story sharing at coffee hour.  One year there was even a sleepover in the church.

This year, on Jan. 24, three of the M&M's made the trip to Esperanza with belated Christmas gifts in hand.  "As our girls are now 14 and not 10, we thought gift cards to a local store was appropriate," they report.  "Each and every one has become a wonderful young lady.  It has been a wonderful ministry.  Looking back today on July 22, 2008, no one would ever say that this relationship would go as it did. There was a bonding from day one and it just grew into something beautiful."  The girls graduate from Esperanza as eighth graders in June, and the M&M's plan to be there.

Lynn Film Festival winnersCongratulations, "I Am Lynn":  "I Am Lynn," a film made in 2010 as a youth project by Oasis Film Institute at St. Stephen's Church in Lynn, finished fourth out of 30 entries in the Salem Youth Film Festival, where the top 10 films were shown.  The filmmakers (pictured) were honored at a showing at Salem Cinema on March 1.  Clergy and delegates got a chance to see the film and meet the filmmakers at Diocesan Convention in 2010 when it was hosted that year by St. Stephen's Church.
