Greetings! We had a great Book Group the other night, thanks too all who came and made for an interesting discussion about Yannick Murphy's The Call. The verdict was that everyone liked it quite a bit and was taken with Murphy's unconventional narrative style which added significantly to the story. We recommend! (Actually, I put it on Staff Picks so it's still available with the 15% discount if you haven't read it yet.)
After a good talk, we moved on to new business, namely picking books for the next four months. They are:
February 8: Among Others by Jo Nesbo (fiction)
March 14: Cleopatra by Stacey Schiff (biography)
April 11: The Tiger's Wife by Tea Obreht (fiction)
May 9: The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks (memoir) by Rebecca Skloot
We always meet on the second Wednesday of the month at 7pm.
It took a lot of suggestions to winnow down the list to these four books. Here's some of the others we considered. They may not have received enough votes this time, but they create a great suggested reading list nonetheless.
The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein
Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese
Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls
Incendiary by Chris Cleave
The Paris Wife by Paula McClain
Super Sad True Love Story by Gary Shteyngart
Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford
Room by Emma Donoghue
Townie by Andre Dubus III
T. Rex and the Crater of Doom by Walter Alvarez
Emily, Alone by Stewart O'Nan
Mudbound by Hilary Jordan
Poser by Claire Dederer
Her Fearful Symmetry by Audrey Niffenegger
A Visit From the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan
People of the Book by Geraldine Brooks
Books we plan on suggesting to the group as soon as they come out in paperback:
The Marriage Plot by Jeffrey Eugenides
State of Wonder by Ann Patchett
Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand
Swerve by Stephen Greenblatt
In the Garden of Beasts by Erik Larson
Death Come to Pemberly by P.D. James
See you on the 8th to talk about Among Others. George, who suggested it, claims it was the best book he read in 2011. And he reads a lot of books!
