Q: When does a cable need to be shielded?
A: There are two primary reasons for using a shielded cable - physical protection and electromagnetic shielding.
Physical protection applications include rodent and insect resistance, cut resistance, or as a load bearing strength member.
Electromagnetic shielding is used to reduce electrical noise from affecting the signals with in the cable, reduce electromagnetic radiation that may interfere with other devices and reduce the possibility of surface discharge.
