A Word from Ola

Greetings!,

Are you an Onyx Woman? What is an Onyx Woman, you ask? An Onyx Woman is ambitious. She is inspired. She knows what she wants and is not afraid to work with other women to get it. She believes in hard work and doesn't step on others to get to the top. She is willing to lift you up and take you along for the journey; but only if you are a go-getter willing to meet her half way.

An Onyx Woman keeps negativity at bay. She doesn't just avoid bad words, she maintains control to avoid thoughts that could block her blessings or adversely impact those who surround her. Jealousy and envy are strangers to this sistah for she has no time and makes no place for demons to reside in the heart she calls home. She knows how to duck when she sees drama coming in for attack. As for those who get in her way, to avoid their negative energy, all she simply has to say is, "Be Well, My Sisters", knowing that what she hurls into the universe boomerangs right back to her. After all, she is not just any woman...she is an Onyx Woman.

What Black Women Have to Say

The Power of ObstaclesSonia
Sonia Brown
United Kingdom

Nearly 10 years ago I was working for a tyrant of a manager who was sucking the essence out of me and totally destroying my soul. The women of color who I was working with had no aspirations for anything else but the JOB even though they were 'Just over Broke' each month. I was spiritually lost and broken because a group of managers were demoralizing me and making me feel like nothing.

I had no networks to turn to, I didn't know how to connect with other successful women of color and to be honest I didn't even think I would ever find them. I was isolated and powerless. The smartest thing I did was get myself a mentor who told me to draft the ideal job and that is how I created the National Black Women's Network. I have never looked back since.

People always say to me that I am lucky and I am successful as if I never had to face challenges to get to where I am today. I created my business with a longing to create the ideal 8-hours in my day. I knew who I wanted to speak to, do business with, and what I would be doing and I created it!

But the most important thing was that I found networks of women (formally and informally) where they were prepared to share their knowledge, experience and sometimes resources to help me realize my goals. When things started to get easier for me I have been consistent in remembering that I must extend that helping hand to the next generation of business owners, entrepreneurs and leaders who need a kind word, information and a listening ear!

I have learned to thank my ex-boss, because it was his cruelty that spurned me on to be who I truly am. Those women are still there, unfulfilled and fearful of redundancy in this period of economic uncertainty.

I no longer fear uncertainty and challenges because I know the experience will make me stronger and wiser; plus it makes a great story when I have to give a speech about overcoming obstacles. My sense of humor has improved because I now laugh because I know my faith will see me through; the trial has not been sent to destroy me but to make me stronger. I have the confidence to say 'I fancy doing this!' and guess what? I make it happen.

Not only am I running a well respected network for women of color, I am fulfilling a long held dream to write features for magazines and a weekly business page in Britain's leading black newspaper. And through this all I can give back every day.

In closing, forums like Onyx Woman are a blessing because when you are in a position where all seems bleak, these stories of inspiration, ambition, courage and support will be a life saver. That is why it's important to update your profile properly so that you can inspire and empower others to 'walk the talk' with confidence knowing that they have a safety net to catch them when they feel that they are about to fall. www.nbwn.org

   Becoming
Celebrating Midlife-Styles
 Conference
Ladies,

We heard you loud and clear. We received your email. We read your letters and we have answered your calls. Your requests have not gone unnoticed. You contacted us to ask, "When is Onyx Woman going to have another conference?"

For our next conference, we wanted to present something different that would address the needs of the many women who started out with us years ago. As we have grown, we have noticed that you have progressed along with us... and you are looking pretty darn good in the process.

No, we are not talking about aging; we are talking about Becoming. Becoming is the journey we have traveled getting from where we were to what we have become. Becoming is Onyx Woman's new word to describe the transition into the next stage of life. Yes, 50 is the new 40 and we want to celebrate.

Our next conference is called Becoming: A Conference to Address the Issues that Impact our Coming of Age. Becoming is scheduled for Spring 2009. The conference is aimed at the 40 plus generation and anyone younger who wants to know more about preparing to Become.

Get on the mailing list so that you won't miss the workshops, giveaways, resources, expert speakers and the sessions that many of you are still talking about.  own@onyxwomannetwork.com
