Post Event - Summary
Jubilee Fine Jewellers
Classification: Jeweller

At last week's luncheon, Mike Charania told us a little about the history of Jubilee Fine Jewellers and also how Diamonds are created.

The store was named for a South African diamond of exceptional whiteness and clarity, called the "Jubilee".

Jubilee Jewellers was started in the African country of Uganda. Eventually all 5 Charania brothers came to work in the successful family business. In the fall of 1972 due to political problems in Uganda, Mike and his family immigrated to Canada as refugees. The five brothers then had to split up, all entering from different countries. The brother that immigrated to Ottawa became a watch maker. He then got his other brothers to get back into that field. Back then, Mike was in Switzerland. In 1973, in a small, half storefront on Bank St. the family business of Julbilee Fine Jewellers began again. Since that time Jubilee has grown into one of the premium jewellers in Ottawa. They currently have 4 stores located in the major malls of the city: St. Laurent, Rideau Centre, Bayshore and Carlingwood. Although all of Mike's brothers have now retired from the family business it is still thriving as the next generations become involved.

Mike had the opportunity to travel to Yellowknife and visit the mine where Canadian diamonds are mined as well as see the process of making them.  Mike explained to us that each Canadian Diamond must have a laser engraved serial number on it to prove that they are real Canadian Diamonds. Of the Diamonds mined in Canada 97% stay in the country and 3% are exported to other countries.

This year, Jubilee Fine Jewellers will celebrate their 60th year in business. Also this year, the Queen of England will be celebrating 60 years on the throne. The same Queen who visited Uganda in 1952 on her way to Australia.

Jubilee Fine Jewellers takes pride in all that they do. Many of their dedicated staff have been employed with Jubilee for over 20 years and enjoy delivering quality service to their customers. Some of these services include repairs, appraisals, gemprints, warrantees and insurance replacements.

For more information about Jubilee Fine Jewellers and/or their products or services visit them online at www.jubilee.ca. To find out more about their 60th anniversary sales or to find that perfect gift contact Mike at (613)747-1797 or stop by one of their 4 locations.
