Post Event - Summary

Eric Pierre of Unik-Collectrite

Unik-Collectrite Inc is a family-owned business, in operation since 1975. It has expanded through the merger of three main debt collection services companies in Eastern Ontario and is recognized by local clients and peers alike as a leader in the field.

Their philosophy is to build a partnership with their clients while conducting their practice in a responsible, professional and ethical manner. While they don't claim to be the biggest credit management company in the industry, they pride themselves in providing personal attention to each account and working

with debtors to find a proper solution and the right payment plan.

Their goal is to be the best cost effective solution to your accounts receivable problems. At Unik-Collectrite Inc, they aim to increase your cash flow while reducing your administrative costs.

At last week's luncheon Eric began his craft talk by introducing members to Unik-Collectrite and his alternate, the company's founder, Jean Pierre Pierre.  Unik-Collectrite is a family owned company that was started in 1975 under the name of Unik Collection Agency and currently has offices in both Rockland and Cornwall.  They are members of the Ontario Society of Collection Agencies, the Better Business Bureau and Equifax & TransUnion

(National Credit Bureau).  Unik-Collectrite is a Credit Management Company that provides their clients with the best cost effective solutions to their delinquent receivables, complimented with Paralegal Services in Small Claims Court.

They have achieved continued, successful growth over the years through both the return of satisfied customers and the acquisition of other collections companies.  Unik Collection Agency changed it's name to Unik-Collectrite in 2004 after the acquisition of Collectrite Cornwall.  Although Unik Collection Agency was already an established company, they wanted to combine the names of the two companies to appeal to Collectrite Cornwall's large client base.  Unik-Collectrite has acquired the following companies:

  • Security Collection Agency (1991 - Ottawa)
  • Collectrite Cornwall (2004 - Cornwall)
  • Systems Collection Agency (2008 - Ottawa)
  • McGrath Canada (2010 - Ottawa)

Eric explained the reasons why collections is a cost effective solution to retrieving outstanding accounts.

  • If they don't collect - You don't pay
  • Maximize your employee time for relative business work - free up your staff's time to work on other tasks that are more specific to their job.
  • Debts lose value over time - the longer a debt is unpaid the less it is worth.

He then outlined the steps involved in collecting accounts with Unik-Collectrite:

  1. A demand letter is sent to the debtor which:
    • Confirms creditor account assigned to us
    • Steps to take to avoid enforcement procedure
  2. The collector attempts to collect the full amount or make payment arrangements.
  3. If there is no cooperation from the debtor, the collector will recommend 2 options:
    • Close the account and may list at the Credit Bureau
    • Take Legal Action
  4. After receiving all information the client makes the final decision

Should the client wish to proceed with legal action, Unik-Collectrite's paralegals will handle the whole legal process including preparing and filing all documents in Small Claims Court, Court appearances and representation enforcing judgments.

A good referral for Unik-Collectrite is esentially any company who has delinquent accounts.  Some examples of good referrals include:

  • Professionals - Accountants, Lawyers, Real Estate Brokers, Insurance Brokers
  • Medical Field - Dentists, Veterinarians, Hospitals
  • Auto Industry - Auto Rentals & Lease, Dealerships, Auto Parts & Repairs
  • Trades - Plumbing & Heating, Electricians, Roofers, Foundation & Forming
