Past Event - Summary

Thursday, January 13, 2011

Last week OXA welcomed a special guest:  Major Mark Wuennenberg of the Canadian Forces

Major Wuennenberg is recognized as an expert in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and is currently assigned to the Directorate of Air Requirements for UAVs where he is the Deputy Project Director for the two UAV projects.  In June 2010, Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, awarded him the Meritorious Service Medal for his outstanding contribution to the acquisition, development and employment of UAVs and for "bringing great honour" to Canada.

Major Wuennenberg's presentation provided an overview of some of Canada's Airforce initiatives including UAV activities.  Currently, there are 2 key priorities:

  • Readiness
  • Integration of New fleets

READINESS

The past year has been one of the most operationally intense periods that has been seen in decades.  Activity levels were high but the events in Haiti put the Armed Forces to a test.  Canada was among the first nations to answer the call and within 18 hours a Hercules touched down in Port-au-Prince.  In support of the relief efforts, the Air Force logged over 840 flying hours during which we:

  • airlifted nearly 5,000 passengers - including repatriating many Canadians
  • delivered nearly 2.5 million kilograms of supplies
  • moved more than 124,000 kilograms of cargo by helicopter within Haiti

At the same time, preparations for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic games were in their final stages.

Every wing in Canada contributed to the effort and almost every fleet was used in one way or another.  This included:

In addition, Canada continued to support its' "routine" missions and operations both at home and abroad.

INTEGRATION OF NEW FLEETS

Canada is in the midst of an unprecedented reinvestment in and modernization of its' aircraft fleets.
  • The C-17 GLOBEMASTER, strategic airlifters have been a huge force multiplier since their arrival in 2007.  From Afghanistan to the Olympics to the earthquake relief efforts in Haiti the Globemaster has provided Canada a tremendous capability to move personnel and equipment.  Earlier in 2010, a Canadian Air Force Globemaster landed at Canadian Forces Station Alert, the most northernly, permanently inhabited location in the world.
  • The Chinook helicopters, have shown clear value since their acquisition, transporting about 2000 Canadian and allied troops per month, protecting them from ground attack and improvised explosive devices.
  • On July 16, 2010 the Government announced it is acquiring 65 F-35 Lightning II aircraft, from Lockheed Martin under the Joint Strike Fighter memorandum of understanding as Canada's next generation fighter.
  • Procuring new fixed wing search and aircraft continues to be a high priority, confirming Canada's long-standing commitment to search and rescue.
  • The acquisition of 10 to 12 Canadian Multi-mission Aircraft is intended to replace the CP-140 Aurora long-range patrol aircraft, starting about 2020.
UAV 101 - UNMANNED AERIAL VEHICLES

A UAV is an aircraft designed or modified not to carry a human pilot.  As an aircraft, the UAV system/crew are subject to the same regulatory and legislative guidance; safety must be comparable to a manned aircraft.

The term "unmanned" or "drone" is misleading.   UAVs require as many if not more personnel to operate and there is always a person "at the controls".  UAV's utilize as many if not more people than traditional aircraft especially when you take into consideration all the personnel required to interpret the information collected. The only difference is that they are not in the aircraft.

UAVs can conduct almost any mission a manned aircraft can do, not just military applications but also many civil uses such as forest fire watch, used during and after natural disasters, pipeline surveys, searching for natural resources, etc.

Canada is the "New York" of UAVs.  If it can make here it can make it anywhere!

Thank you to Major Mark Wuennenberg for an enlightening presentation and his enthusiasm and expertise in sharing this information.
