Ashmont Station Update

Ashmont Station Busway

If you've been by Ashmont Station lately, you've seen the tremendous progress that has been made on the station renovations.  Phase I is almost complete, and Phase II - the "finishes contract" - is due to begin in the spring after a contractor is selected in January.

We will hold a public meeting with T representatives, most likely in January, to provide detailed information on the project.  In the meantime, here is a quick rundown:

Elevators are running; escalators should be running in November; taxi stand should be complete in November; North Plaza due to open between Thanksgiving and mid-December.  Items such as the North Entrance, Radford Lane Entrance, trolley platform enclosures, benches, busway roof, fencing, etc. are in the "finishes contract."  Bids on this contract should be opened mid-December, and a contractor selected by mid-January, with construction complete 15 months from then (spring 2011).

Public Safety Update

There have been many reports lately of robberies  around Ashmont Station (mainly of i-Pods and cell phones), large groups of unruly teens, and aggressive panhandlers near neighborhood stores.  SMAMS is meeting with Boston, Transit and School police and neighborhood merchants to address this situation, and we will have more news in upcoming issues.

One piece of very good news is that the Transit Police are assigning a "beat" officer to Ashmont Station, 7 days a week, 7:30 AM - 3:30 PM.  This is in addition to the officer on duty on Dorchester Ave at the station's busway exit weekdays 3:30 - 7:30 PM, and patrols of the station area by both Transit and Boston police.

Holiday Tree Lighting Saturday, Nov. 28
Tree Lighting 2005
Join Santa & Mrs. Claus and all your neighbors at the annual Peabody Square Tree Lighting on Saturday, Nov. 28.  Gather at the tree on the new Ashmont Station Plaza at 6:30 PM for caroling, hot chocolate & cider, and goody bags for the kids.  Santa & Mrs. C arrive at 7:00 to light the tree, and we head for the party afterward in the Peabody Square Fire Station!

Thanks to all who joined SMAMS and Fields Corner Main Street for Halloween-Tini  - the 5th annual Martinis on the Avenue celebration.  We had a great crowd, a successful auction, and tremendous costume contest (in photo - winner Karin "flapper girl" Cahill and runner up Jack "Verizon Guy" McCarthy).  As always, it was also a chance to renew connections across the St. Mark's and Fields Corner neighborhoods and beyond.
