Manage Your Electric, Natural Gas Costs with Boston Buying Power

Boston Buying Power Logo

The City of Boston invites all local businesses to group together in Boston Buying Power and receive all the utility management services that until now have only been available to the largest of organizations.

The City has selected the UtilityModule company to work with local businesses and provide a service that has been implemented by national companies to manage their energy costs. With so many options and decisions in the energy marketplace, UtilityModule provides customers with the best products and services in the industry to efficiently manage your utility expenditures.

There are two ways to save energy dollars: either use less energy, or pay less for what you use. Boston Buying Power addresses both aspects and provides your business with the most effective purchasing and energy services the market has to offer.

When you join Boston Buying Power, your account is grouped with other local businesses to create purchasing power in the energy markets. EnergyAuctions is a state-of-the-art "reverse auction" in which suppliers compete to serve the aggregated energy requirements. Businesses that join Boston Buying Power are grouped with similar accounts for pricing efficiency, but each account retains its individual contracts and billing. EnergyAuctions carefully evaluates all eligible suppliers in the marketplace, giving you peace of mind knowing that all options are considered.

Purchasing energy is only one component of utility management. Before your purchase is made, there are many ways to save energy dollars. After your purchase is made, there are also ways to save. Boston Buying Power takes advantage of these opportunities. They benchmark your usage to similar businesses, identify options to reduce your consumption and choose suppliers to complete the work. UtilityModule provides all members with the tools and services available to isolate problems, plan solutions, increase efficiencies and lower costs.

Although there is no guarantee that market prices won't drop below the Boston Buying Power negotiated rates, past performance indicates and virtually all experts believe that market prices will continue to increase in the long term.

A public information session on Boston Buying Power will be scheduled in the near future.  In the meantime, please call 888-317-3923 or visit www.bostonbuyingpower.com for more details.
Improving Business/Youth/Police Interactions

This past December, SMAMS and the Neponset Health Center held our first business/youth/police roundtable discussion. We were able to bring together business owners from the SMAMS business district, as well as officers from the MBTA Transit Police Department and youth from the community. The discussion focused on issues leading to youth violence in the South Dorchester Area and how business owners, youth, and police can interact more positively.

The discussion was very informative and allowed the business owners, youth, and officers to share both positive and negative experiences with one another. Some of the issues that were discussed concerned disrespect, shoplifting, and loitering. Many of the business owners discussed strategies that they could use to address these issues, especially during the before- and after-school hours. In addition, they discussed ways to deter crime inside and outside their stores.

Although the issue of teen behavior in the businesses was the driving force behind the discussion, public safety was also addressed. Store owners and law enforcement officers believed that if youth behavior was different in the businesses, then business owners and youth could interact more positively and vice versa.

Our next round table will be held in March, and we will publicize the time and place.  Even if you can't attend, we still need to hear from you! Call us or email us and let us know what your experiences are with youth in the community. Share ideas on how you think youth, business owners, and law enforcement can have more positive interactions. In order for us to come up with strategies to change the dynamic, we encourage all of you to take a stand in making our community a better place to work and live.
