Dot-2-Dot Cafe Opening Saturday!

Dot-2-Dot Cafe

The much-anticipated Dot-2-Dot Cafe will open for business Saturday, May 3, 9:00 AM at 1739 Dorchester Ave. (just south of St. Mark's Church).  Owner Karen Henry-Garrett, a Cordon-Bleu-trained chef and local resident,  will be serving up everything from coffee & pastries to cuisines from around the world, in a menu that changes daily.  The Dot-2-Dot will also provide catering for office meetings and parties.

A cafe has always been one of SMAMS' top priorities, and the Dot-2-Dot made the wait worthwhile!  We were honored to help with site selection, zoning and storefront renovation.

With plenty of seating, free wi-fi access, and exhibits of local artwork, the Dot-2-Dot is destined to become a true community center as well as a place to grab a bite.  Stop in for a visit (7:00 AM - 7:00 PM Tuesday - Friday, 9:00 AM - 2:00 PM weekends), and  you'll soon be a regular!  For more information, call the Dot-2-Dot at 617-436-2368.

Boston Shines.....With Your Help!

Boston Shines 2008 Cleanup CrewThanks to all who participated in the Boston Shines neighborhood cleanup Saturday, April 26.  We had perfect weather, a gung-ho crew, and hot dogs in Peabody Square at the end!

Special thanks go to Lauren Smyth in the Mayor's Office of Neighborhood Services  for a great job of coordinating the event.
2008 Boston Civic Summit Set for May 3

One thing that makes Dorchester special is how many people are willing to work on making this a great neighborhood.  The Boston Civic Summit, co-chaired by City Council President Maureen Feeney, will help Dorchesterites hone their community-building skills, and it will give people from all over the city the chance to broaden their networks and learn how other neighborhoods are tackling common issues.

The summit will run from 8:15 AM to 3:45 PM, at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center, 415 Summer Street.  Admission is free and open to all.  To register and for more information, click here or call 617-517-3116.
All Saints' Choir of Men & Boys -  May 4

The All Saints' Choir of Men & Boys will appear in concert on Sunday, May 4, at four o'clock. This nationally-known ensemble will present some of the most beautiful music from the English Cathedral tradition from the Renaissance to the present. Tickets are $10 at the door. The Parish of All Saints is located at 209 Ashmont Street. Ample free parking, handicapped-accessible. For more information, please call 617-436-3520.

Mother's Walk for Peace - May 11

The Louis D. Brown Peace Institute is preparing for its 12th Annual Mothers' Walk for Peace, a fundraiser to support families statewide who have lost loved ones to violence.  The walk takes place on Mother's Day, Sunday, May 11, starting at the Town Field in Field's Corner.  Registration starts at 7:00 AM.

The walk route stretches approximately 4 miles, through the Saint Mark's area, Codman Square, Four Corners, Uphams Corner and Bowdoin-Geneva, ending back at Town Field.

Funds raised from the walk will support these Peace Institute activities:

  • Helping families to cope with sudden, tragic loss and navigate the criminal justice system
  • Creating an environment for reconciliation between families of victims and offenders
  • PEACEZONE, a nationally-recognized school-based program that helps students heal from trauma and loss, make positive decisions, and avoid risk-taking behavior

Last year, 5000 residents from across the state participated in the walk and event organizers hope to double that number this year. Clementina Chéry, the Institute's president, says "I believe it's possible for Boston to rise above violence completely and permanently.  We won't rest until that goal is achieved and every child is truly safe and on a positive path in life."
