Win $500 in the Dot Ave Scavenger Hunt !
Saturday May 12 marks the return of the Great Dorchester Ave. Scavenger Hunt - a chance to get acquainted with SMAMS district merchants while chasing a $500 cash reward! Hunters will gather at the Ashmont Grill at 1:30 PM for a 2:00 PM sendoff, and work their way through the SMAMS business district (Dot Ave from Ashmont Station to Melville Ave), finishing up at 4:00 PM at Dorchester's newest Irish pub, Tony McKernan's Centre Bar.
In between, hunters will stop in at many of the district's businesses to identify objects on the clue sheet. The individual or team (up to four per team) that identifies the most objects will take home $500 in cash, and everyone will have a great time learning what our district offers to consumers.
Registration fee is $5 per person, payable at the door, to help cover expenses. For more information, please call Dan Larner in the SMAMS office, 617-825-3846.

Celebrate Cinco de Mayo and support the Dot Day Parade!
The Dorchester Day Parade is one of Boston's greatest traditions, and it's financed totally by private contributions. Join your neighbors at the home of Jack Cunningham & Ann Walsh, 15 Fairfax Street, 4:00 - 8:00 PM on Saturday, May 5th, to commemorate Mexico's 1862 defeat of the invading French Army and help support Dorchester's big day. Mexican specialities will be served! The suggested donation is $20 at the door, and all proceeds benefit Dot Day activities. For more information, please call the SMAMS office at 617-825-3846. What would you think of a Bruegger's Bagel Bakery in Peabody Square? A Survey
Viet AID, a non-profit organization and SMAMS neighbor in Fields Corner, is working with Boston University students on a survey designed to measure neighborhood opinion on a hypothetical case - a Bruegger's Bagel Bakery moving into Peabody Square. There are currently no plans to open a Bruegger's, but your answers would help Viet Aid and the BU class to gauge the possible reaction if a Bruegger's were proposed in the future.
Please click here and take a few minutes to fill out the survey. SMAMS staff completed it in 3 minutes, before drinking morning coffee, so you can be sure it won't take much time.

Mother's Day Walk for Peace May 13
In the context of a 10-year high in teen homicides in Boston, the Louis D. Brown Peace Institute is preparing for its 11th Annual Mothers' Walk for Peace. The walk reaches out to families statewide who have lost loved ones due to violence, and takes place on Mother's Day, Sunday, May 13, starting at Field's Corner in Dorchester. Registration starts at 7:30 a.m. and the walk kicks off at 8:30 a.m. For additional information on the walk, including information on how local area businesses in our Main Streets area can sponsor the walk, downloadable pledge forms, flyers, pre-registration information, please visit: www.motherswalkforpeace.org.
The walk route stretches approximately 3.6 miles from Townsfield Park in Fields Corner through Codman Square and ending back at Townfield-all in Dorchester, where most of the teen violence has occurred this past year.
Funds raised from the walk enable the Peace Institute to remain on the front lines of this violence by:
· Helping families cope with sudden, tragic loss and navigate the criminal justice system
· Creating an environment for reconciliation between families of victims and offenders
· Supporting PEACEZONE, a nationally-recognized school-based program that helps students heal from trauma and loss, make positive decisions, and avoid risk-taking behavior. | |
