From the Head of School ~
    Dr. David Portnoy

Dear Yavneh Family,

I hope you all had a meaningful Yom Kippur and an easy fast.  Our first High Holidays in Dallas have been filled with beauty and hospitality, spirituality and a feeling of home.

Our students spent the holiday in mature reflection - many helped and led at their home congregations - and returned to school with a renewed sense of purpose and focus.  Yesterday's Mincha, potentially an anticlimactic event, was filled with ruach as Rabbi Friedman encouraged us to make the most of the New Year and the coming weeks.

While we have had a relatively short week on Merit Drive, we have enjoyed quite a lot of activity. Yavneh students and alumni, many of whom return to campus regularly, filled our halls and the Beit Midrash, and Monday evening marked a memorable conclusion to a Girls Volleyball season with an exciting win and great community support.  Thank you very much!

Best of luck setting up your sukkot for next week's holiday. Shira and I are looking forward to visiting family back East, and hopefully, we will all enjoy good weather to celebrate this wonderful holiday.

On behalf of our entire faculty and staff, we wish you

Shabbat Shalom and Chag Sameach,

                                                               ~~ Dr. P

"Have a Little Faith" became much more than the title of a book and television, it came to life as Gilah Lewis Sietz, the daughter of Rabbi Al Lewis joined us in davening and shared the beauty that was her father - the beauty that lives on in her stories, and the memories and writings of author Mitch Albom.

Our guest, a gift of a lifelong friendship between she and Congregation Shearith Israel's Weitzman Family Religious School director, and previous guest to Yavneh, Dina Eliezer.

"My father passed away but he lives on in our souls, and in the souls of many," said Gilah of Rabbi Lewis who was raised in a Conservadox home, and who, as one who loved to teach, was encouraged by his own father to become a rabbi.   Rabbi Lewis, left many legacies, including the concept of the Jewish Community Relations Council, which grew of his started of an interfaith council, providing lunch n' learn programs and more.

"I learned so much from my father who started as a rabbi in a little house which became a small shul and then a very large shul (Congregation Beth Sholom, in Cherry Hill, N.J.).

Gilah Lewis Sietz

Teacher at the Cherry Hill JCC and
 Temple Emanuel in Mt. Laurel

He taught that G-d is happy as long as we are asking the questions. No one likes to be ignored, and while you might not be 'believing' in the moment, as long as you are exploring, learning, and thinking, he is happy."

"Each person must find their own unique way, their own voice, their own way to embrace G-d," said Gilah. "It's not about the 'dressing' of the religion, it's about embracing it and holding on."

"We all have the spark of G-d within us," she said. "How we interpret that spark is our own and it's so important to not pass judgment on anyone else's views or how they live. It is only our joy to spread G-d's love and message."

Gilah shared more of how Mitch Albom grew up in their community and returned, well into his career, renewing his relationship with his rabbi, Rabbi Lewis. The two met for years and much of their friendship grew to become the wildly-received, "Have a Little Faith."

"Derech Eretz, - compassion and kindness, understanding and care - that is the basis of living a Jewish life," said Gilah. "If you live with Derech Eretz, you are living as Jew."

We hope you enjoy the Dvar Torah and this week's
Snappy Sentiments and that
share and discuss them at your Shabbat table!

The Week in Review ~

"What does it mean to forgive," - that was the focus as our students readied for the final days of atonement.    "We all make mistakes," taught Rabbi Meir Tannenbaum, Associate Principal/Judaic Curriculum.  "How do you want people to treat you when you need to be forgiven?  Forgiving is one of the hardest acts we can perform - but what does it mean, and what does it entail?"

Students viewed "Jewish Food for Thought," the story of a young man caught up in holding on to a grudge, "allowing another to live 'rent free' in his head."  In their Yavneh
Mishpachot, families, later the students determined how they would handle the situation, and those of their own, and how best they could go into the holiday of Yom Kippur with clarity of those they might feel have wronged them.

Students then watched an encounter, "The Power of Forgiveness," between a son and his father with a silent, but oh so loud, manifestation of

this  incredible message.

"Forgiveness doesn't mean forgetting, but it does

mean letting go of the attached resentment

to an act," said Rabbi Tannenbaum.

"It can be difficult and challenging, but it isn't impossible."

PSAT prep ~~

NEW TO THE PSAT THIS YEAR

Students will be required to copy the bolded statement below in cursive and then sign their name to the answer sheet of the PSAT on Wednesday, October 17.  Because so many students spend more time with a keyboard, then pen in hand, College Board has advised us to have all students practice writing the following statement.

I hearby agree to the conditions set forth in the test regulations and certify that I am the person whose name, address and signature appear on the answer sheet.

Please take time to practice writing this statement in cursive and developing a signature.
You will also need to do this for the SAT tests as juniors and seniors.

On exam morning, Freshmen, Sophomores, and Juniors will attend prayers and have breakfast at the usual times. We will then administer the test between 9am and 12:30pm. It is important for students to come and do the best that they can. Each student should bring two #2 pencils and the calculator that is being used for math and science classes.

Lunch will be served at the usual time and afternoon classes will meet as usual.

(Seniors, who will be off-Campus taking their
class portraits during the testing time, will also
return to Campus for a regular afternoon schedule).
