From the Head of School ~
    Dr. David Portnoy

Dear Yavneh Family,

The ten days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are an intense time of self-reflection and community responsibility.

Here at Yavneh, we have been engaged in thoughtful conversation and introspection on a wide range of issues, and in a variety of venues.

At Mincha services yesterday, for example, Rabbi Tannenbaum shared a powerful story about a young person who had become estranged from her family.  Speaking in terms that resonate with young people and adults alike, Rabbi T explained that, like a parent who will always welcome his child home, we are all blessed to be part of a community and a tradition that values repentance and forgiveness, apologies and healing.

Like the parent who welcomes her children home, we at Yavneh strive to be a "second home" to our students and families, showing compassion, concern and love for those who are part of the Yavneh Family and those closest to them.  Please let us know when you need our help and care, and we will endeavor to do our best to meet your needs.

On behalf of our entire faculty and staff, we wish you Shabbat Shalom and Gmar Chatima Tova - to be inscribed and sealed for a Good Year.

Naomi Schrager
Yavneh Academy Associate Principal Judaic Programming

"One year ago today we davened together, with students from around the world, asking Hashem to return Gilad Shalit to his home and his family.  Just 1o days later Shalit did return to his family - our prayers and those of millions were answered," said Naomi Schrager, Yavneh Associate Principal/Judaic Programming.

Remember as you fulfill these days of significance that prayers are answered and look to where you know that Hashem gave you a "yes," to your prayers.  Hashem listens and He hears.

Use this time to reflect; to have the faith to deal with the times when He says 'no,' and to have gratitude and the strength to appreciate when Hashem says 'yes.'"

We hope you enjoy the Dvar Torah and this week's
 Snappy Sentiments and that
share and discuss them at your Shabbat table!

                            Shabbat Shalom ~

Rabbi Meir Tannenbaum, Naomi Schrager, and the Judaic Studies Faculty.

The Week in Review ~

During morning prayers, Rabbis Meir Tannenbaum, Howard Wolk, and Michael Friedman acted as judges before Yavneh faculty and students, annulling the vows proclaimed.

Yavneh's Families gathered together this week to share the meaning of the Holy days - hosting Rosh Hashana seders with both traditional, and unique to our halls, foods.  While the students enjoyed classic tastes of apples and honey, carrots, and (gummi) fish, they also created wishes for 5773 of unique flavors ~

Gushers - that goodness should gush forth in the New Year

Donuts - for a "whole-y" year

Fruit by the Foot - with blessings for a long and fruitful year

The students also read meaningful words of the diary of Hannah Senesh from behind enemy lines, with her desire to live her life to its most meaningful potential. They studied Maimonides' Hilkhot Teshuvah, Laws of Repentance, and they explored with depth Robert Frost's "The Road Not Traveled," a long-beloved Yavneh cue, gleaning the importance of making wise decisions.

Yavneh's students celebrate, learn, and grow together
as mishpachot, as families!
Each family, created of students of each grade, works together on projects, programming, and truly enjoying the essence of the Yavneh Family!

Class of  2013 ~ Lane Engelberg
 "Yavneh is:  Friendly.  Open.  Supportive."

"Yavneh had the tight-knit community I needed, and, while this is school, we also have a lot of fun at Yavneh," said Lane, a Dallas native, who transferred from Jasper High School, at the semester break of his Freshman year. "As much time as we spend at school, that's really important."

logo bwThe son of Leah and David, and older brother to Jake, Lane is affiliated with Congregation Beth Torah and also Congregation Nishmat Am. A member of BBYO's Louis D. Brandeis chapter, a volunteer with Dallas  Ramps - help build ramps at nearby residences of those living with disabilities, an accomplished Tae Kwon Do student, on-Campus Lane is a talented percussionist of Yavneh's Music Ensemble.

"I have taught many students here at Yavneh, but I cannot remember ever teaching a student that was as serious about understanding the material as Lane," said Rabbi Meir Tannenbaum, Associate Principal of Judaic Curriculum. "He has an unquenchable thirst for knowledge in all areas. He truly wants to know and understand everything and is never satisfied with the quick and easy answer. It is Lane's drive for deeper understanding and comprehension that will certainly help him succeed in all of his endeavors.

With dreams of becoming a game developer, Lane is applying to logo bwDigiPen, the only four-year accredited college that specializes in Game Development (also the headquarters of Nintendo), as well as to Rochester Institute of Technology, Carnegie Mellon, Drexel, Rice University, and Texas A&M universities. "I enjoy the creative spatial design of games, and I really respect the thinking, the 'smarts' behind them," said Lane who has already designed games and completed a course in Java coding. "I've had handheld games since I was six and I love how you can be transported to another place, the interactivity of it."

Lane made the most of his Senior Summer '12, taking a Java programming language course at Southern Methodist University, serving as a marketing intern at HBR Technologies, a managed IT services provider, and traveling to Israel, with his family, to celebrate his brother's bar mitzvah.

"During the several years that I taught Lane it was wonderful to see his development and maturation as an individual and a student," said former Judaic faculty member, Rabbi Howard Wolk. "He was always the first one in class and always a serious student who thought things out, was analytical and showed a strong desire to learn."

"Whether we were studying Jewish law or history, Lane demonstrated a strong attachment to the subject and felt that it was really relevant to him. Over the years he has grown in self-confidence and he has become comfortable expressing his opinion and point of view."

Rabbi Wolk, now the fulltime Community Chaplain at Jewish Family Service, is just one of many proud of Lane. "Lane's maturity was both a pre-requisite for and a by-product of his internships," said Rabbi Wolk. "As his teacher I was very proud to hear glowing reports from JFS staff members about his dedication and how he made a positive impression on others."

"I helped build CHAI's facebook, You Tube, Tumblr and other resources while growing in my own understanding of how those living with cognitive disabilities should be treated," said Lane whose served as a Social Media Intern, through JFS' Rabbi Gerald J. Klein Summer Internship program at CHAI/Community Homes for Adults, Inc. "CHAI is an incredible opportunity and Dallas is very lucky to have it here."

Dallas IS lucky to have CHAI, and Yavneh IS lucky, blessed, and honored to have had Lane set the example of what a Yavneh student is to our community.

PSAT prep ~~

NEW TO THE PSAT THIS YEAR

Students will be required to copy the bolded statement below in cursive and then sign their name to the answer sheet of the PSAT on Wednesday, October 17.  Because so many students spend more time with a keyboard, then pen in hand, College Board has advised us to have all students practice writing the following statement.

I hearby agree to the conditions set forth in the test regulations and certify that I am the person whose name, address and signature appear on the answer sheet.

Please take time to practice writing this statement in cursive and developing a signature.
You will also need to do this for the SAT tests as juniors and seniors.
