From the Head of School ~ Dr. David Portnoy

Dear Yavneh Family,
It has been a week of first and a first of weeks.
We successfully completed our first full cycle of classes and activities, and we cheered on our Lady Bulldogs in their first matches, including a big win on the road last night and a terrific home crowd earlier in the week!
We also hosted our first guest speaker at our Friday Assembly, and welcomed our senior class parents to an informative evening about colleges and Israel gap year programs with three recent Yavneh alumni: Leigh Bonner '11 (Barnard College '16), Elan Kogutt '11 (University of Texas, Austin '16) and Julie Meltzer '10 (NYU '15).
Our teachers are teaching, and - more important - students are learning in every discipline from English to Tanakh, Calculus to Hebrew, Visual Arts to Journalism, and every topic in between.
Many of you have already joined us for prayers (Tfila or Davening), which are 8am every morning of the school week (Shacharit), and 3:20pm each afternoon (Mincha), Monday to Thursday. Please feel free to visit us in our beautiful campus synagogue (Beit Midrash) at any of these services.
Also, please remember that our delicious kosher hot lunch program is up and running, and we are serving in the Yavneh Student Lounge every day. From salad bar to schnitzel, chicken to quesadillas, you can be confident in the quality and portions of this excellent service.
It's been a long, early wake-up week for many of our students, after a long summer of more flexible schedules. Parents, please encourage your children catch up on their sleep over Shabbat and the weekend, so that they are ready to learn when they return on Monday!
Shabbat Shalom, and Go Bulldogs!
~~ Dr. P

Rabbi Michel Lomner ~
National Council Synagogue Youth
|
Rabbi Michel Lomner, of Dallas' NCSY was this morning's guest, sharing the message of "Maseh ish u'fekudato," of the influence we have on one another, for the good others will do for having associated with us, as well as for the negative.
"The smile you share as you walk down a street is contagious," he said. "So too is the frown. As we prepare ourselves for the upcoming High Holy Days, realize the influence you have."
We hope you enjoy the Dvar Torah and this week's Snappy Sentiments, and that share and discuss them at your Shabbat table!
Shabbat Shalom ~
Rabbi Meir Tannenbaum, Naomi Schrager, and the Judaic Studies Faculty.

The Week in Review ~

services and class schedules, with more than 120 students and their faculty members making their way through the halls.
"Everyone has been so nice, from the students in the upper grades who are really helpful and welcoming, to the teachers who all seem to really care about us learning," said Risa Mond, a freshman from Frankford Middle School who is ready for the new learning experience.
"Even in the first few days I can tell the teachers make sure we all understand what we're doing.

Class of 2012 Senior Summer Soiree
|
I'm really happy so far." The start of school capped off more than a week of celebrations that included a Freshman Fun Night of pizza and scavenger hunting, a Senior Summer Soiree with the Class of 2013 getting to know their new Head of School, and realizing their role as leaders on campus, as well as a back-to-school picnic for all of Yavneh's families and faculty.
"Our opening activities stressed the nature of Yavneh as a 'second family' for so many," Head of School, Dr. David Portnoy said of the many opportunities for students to come together to ready for the year. "Thanks to all who helped kick off the year i n style."
"We've had a remarkable first week-and-a-half, everyone full of energy and optimism for the year. It is as if everyone was ready for the summer to end and a new experience to take flight." said Dr. Portnoy. "We are blessed with our largest freshman class ever and a great group of upperclassmen, together with an exceptional faculty and an incredibly supportive set of families. We are looking forward to a fantastic year." Physics-ally Fit! Yavneh's physics class, taught by Lourdes Linzey has begun the year dedicated to teaching the prime elements of motion in one dimension such as position, velocity, time and acceleration. Experiments of data collection included the dropping of a tennis ball from different heights, in order to calculate the derivative of position and derivative of velocity, as well as the use of air tracks to calculate for acceleration. Students formed conclusions based on their collected measurements, observations and error analysis.

Yavneh's '12 YACHAD members were feted a Zinga's "fro yo" farewell as they prepared to leave for their respective colleges and study programs in Israel. Class of 2013 ~ Tamar Cohen
"Yavneh is: Caring. Awesome. Family. "
Ever the go-getter, Tamar is a leader among the leaders of the Class of 2013, planning get-togethers, helping to coordinate Yavneh's new "families," of students in all four grades, pegging "big" and "little" siblings between seniors and new students.

Always at the head of the cheering line, Tamar, a recipient of Yavneh's 2012 Ruach Award and a constant in the Spirit Club, enjoys bringing the school's students together. "The best part of Yavneh is that you walk around in the hallway and everyone smiles at you," she said. "It's really the greatest feeling is to walk into the student lounge and everyone says 'hey,' and you feel at home.
"To wake up early in the morning to go to services and see so many girls sitting there and praying together gives you the feelings of family, of togetherness. Whether it's seeing people who have graduated, who come back to visit, or meeting prospective students, there is always a warm feeling and you never feel alone.
It's easy to be spirited about such a great place and I really do
thank G-d for that."
"Tamar is one of those students who are just easy to teach.
She wants to learn and understand the material and she always
tries to find the relevance in whatever we are learning," said Associate Principal/Judaic Programming, Naomi Schrager. "Her excitement is contagious and she is incredibly spirited. Tamar is considerate and respectful of others and is genuinely concerned about and for
her friends.
Tamar moved with her family to Dallas, from Israel, in time to spend her eighth grade year at Akiba. The choice to attend Yavneh to continue her Jewish education, came because of the school's reputation, shared through campmates (Molly and Sophie '10 Geller, Mina Pulitzer '12 and Emily '12 and Sarah Rohan '10) she'd known at Camp Moshava in Pennsylvania. "There are a lot of kids from Dallas who go to Moshava and I went there, from Israel, for seven years," she said. "Everything we heard was the truth. Students do well in every class, even with the long day because of the teachers who always support us and they push us to do better.
 | |
"I love teaching the parsha of the week to my students," said Tamar. "I have to study it in a new way, a way that can be explained, not just for myself. Because I want to work with children, this is a really good introduction --- and it's a lot of fun!"
|
They work hard to make every class enjoyable and we are glad to come back each day."
The daughter of Kineret and Shai, Tamar is the sister of Devora '10, Hadas '16, Elior, Jeoyada, and Eliyahu. Affiliated with Congregation Shaare Tefilla, Tamar extends her desire to work with kids there on Shabbat, where she can often be found with the youngest in the congregation.
Involved in many community and Yavneh programs during her high school years, Tamar has been a member of BBYO's Kravitz chapter, of Yavneh's Students Against Terrorism, Students4Students, the Spirit Club, and on the Lady Bulldog Basketball and Bulldog Tennis teams. Following her passion for children, Tamar has spent summers working at Akiba's Camp Mazal and helping her mother at home with her younger siblings.
Starting the college application process, Tamar is considering a future specializing in children's needs, perhaps in the field of speech therapy. "I absolutely love kids, something that has come I'm sure from my Mom's teaching me that family is first. Whatever I do, I'm pretty sure it will be something to do with helping kids."
"Tamar really is a second mother to so many," said Rabbi Meir Tannenbaum, Associate Principal/Judaic Curriculum, noting that as the second of six in her own home family, she's had much practice. "She is a rare find. I cannot count how many times she has come into my office to ask how she can help a particular student who may going through a rough time.
"Whether Tamar is volunteering to teach new students or making sure that we are prepared for our next holiday, Tamar is one of the main reasons that Yavneh is such a special school," said Rabbi Tannenbaum.
It is her caring and thoughtfulness that makes her an irreplaceable resource within our school."
Always a kid at heart, Tamar indeed has a spirit that overflows the paint cans with which she decorates every occasion.
