Dear Yavneh Family,

Welcome to the

2012-2013 School Year!

I am so very excited to be at Yavneh this year, and have already met many of you - students, parents, alumni and teachers - over the summer months.

Welcome also to the new format of our weekly E-newsletter, which we're calling "E-tone," the Hebrew word for newspaper.  Every Friday afternoon, you'll be receiving a copy of the E-tone, including highlights of the week, important upcoming dates, Divrei Torah and much, much more!

As you review the calendar for the opening days of school, please note that we will be providing hot lunch for everyone on Wednesday, August 15, and that our Friday bagel breakfasts will start next week as well.

Speaking of food, our new Yavneh lunch program will be served in the Yavneh student lounge - making it easier for our students - and will feature a salad bar each day.  We are also working on healthy vending options that will be available this year.

To paraphrase the famous line, "Feed them and they will learn!"

It's going to be a great year!

Shabbat Shalom, and Go Bulldogs!

Welcome back! We hope everyone had a great summer and is well rested and ready for the new year! We have some exciting developments in the Judaic department, including the launch of a new Advanced Judaic Track. In addition to intensive Torah study during the school day, the students in this track will be participating in a new Mishmar program (after school learning) and they will have opportunities to advance their skills and knowledge even more. We will share news from this initiative as the year progresses.

Each week, this segment of the E-Tone will include a link to our "Snappy Sentiments," Dvar Torah, written by our Yavneh faculty or students (click on the blue Snappy title).
We hope you enjoy the Dvar Torah, and share and discuss them at your Shabbat table!

Shabbat Shalom ~

Rabbi Meir Tannenbaum, Naomi Schrager, and the Judaic Studies Faculty.

Welcome to the Yavneh Family

Back-to-school means just that, back to their school for Eliza Lavi Hochman and Yael Zbolon, two of Yavneh's newest faculty members, and both graduates of Yavneh's Class of 2005.

Eliza, who began as an Assistant Lady's Bulldog Volleyball

and Basketball Coach last year, and now adds Girl's P.E.,

Health, and General Studies' substitute teaching to her duties.

A graduate of St. Edwards University, she earned a BA in Education.

For Yael, who graduated from Brandeis University and  most recently St. Mary's Law School, teaching

AP Government brings her back into the classroom, to

teach that which she has studied with full heart.

"To have alumni on our staff is very exciting, and these two young women will be great role models for our students," said Dr. David Portnoy, Yavneh's Head of School. "It really is a testament to the culture of our school that they, who grew up here, and who were encouraged by our faculty, many of whom remain, would chose to return as leaders. For a Head of School, this is a dream."

Yavneh's Judaic Faculty is enhanced this year with the additions of Rabbi Mike Friedman and Rabbi Sandor Shulkes.  Rabbi Friedman is the husband of Judaic Studies and Math teacher, Nikki Friedman, will be teaching Oral Law, Sophomore JTL and he will lead our new Meditation & Prayer tefillah. Rabbi Shulkes, who recently moved to Dallas with his wife Rachel, and one year old daughter, will be teaching our Freshman JTL class.

With our alumni, new Judaic Studies teachers, and our new Athletic Director, Coach David Zimmerman in the fold as Yavneh begins its nineteenth academic year, with 118 students enrolled, including its largest ever freshman class of 32, the school is certain to continue to be a strong, and meaningful, place of learning.

The Week in Review ~

Freshman Fun Night

Yavneh's entering Class of 2016 connected with each other, as they gathered for a pizza dinner, games, and introductions, at the home of David Steinbrecher '16, followed by n ice-breaker scavenger hunt through Northpark Mall.

Congratulations to the 1st place team, Avi Baynash, Ethan Fisher, Raquel Henkin, Gaby Schultz, Danielle Berman, and to the rest of the freshman class!

"The scavenger hunt encouraged our students had to be think, be silly, work together, and regardless if they knew each other for many years, or had just met, they were all on the same page,"

said Karen Hazen-Cohen, Yavneh's Director of Admissions, who credits our hosts and chaperones, parents  Ann Ochstein, Melanie Rudomin and Janyce Steinbrecher, with ensuring a great time for all!

"We reminded the students' that just like the scavenger hunt,

high school is a new experience - but they are not alone.  Students should

use their classmates, teachers, and administrators for help whenever they need it."

Class of  2013 ~ Rachel Chanon
 "Yavneh is:  Comfortable.  Accepting.  Supportive."

"Yavneh felt like the best fit for me, and it was where I felt most comfortable," said Rachel. "I love Yavneh because everyone really  cares and knows about each individual, and there is always extra help if needed."

"Rachel is a bright, hard-working student who lights up the room the moment she walks in,"

said Nikki Friedman, who teaches math and Judaic Studies.

"She has an inquisitive mind and excels in mathematics, while always maintaining her sense of modesty.

"Best known for her contagious giggle, Rachel's friendliness shines inside and outside of the classroom."

Not sure yet of her major - but certain whatever she does it will be

something she enjoys, rather than "just" as a business move, Rachel is readying for the application process to begin; looking at universities in Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas.

"The best part about Yavneh is the family like environment.

It always feels good walking into school surrounded by people who truly know you and care for you," said Rachel. "It's different in that everyone is friends with kids in each grade and I love it. Everyone is caring and always  entertaining and being surrounded with the kids from Yavneh gives me a feeling of pride and joy."

"Rachel is one of the most bubbly, warm and happy students

I have ever come across," said Naomi Schrager, Associate Principal/Judaic Programming.  "She is cheerful and always dependable and deeply concerned with doing well in her classes - fun to be around and she has the most infectious giggle in the world!"

She is as bouncy as her hair, as sparkly as her shoes - and she is a pleasure to teach,"

said Mrs. Schrager, "punctual, prepared, and always ready to learn. I expect that Rachel

will make tons of friends wherever she goes and will spread her good will, charm and character around."

A native Dallasite, Rachel, a member of BBYO's Kravitz Chapter and  Congregation Shearith Israel, is the daughter of Anita and Todd, and the sister of Courtney and Max.

A strong player for Yavneh's Tennis Team, as well as for many years at the J, Rachel is committed to Yavneh's Hashinui/Environmental Organization, the Red Cross Club, and Helping Hands for the Homeless. She enjoys spending time with her friends, traveling, playing tennis, and being with her family.

Summer breaks have meant many years at Camp Young Judaea and Camp Sabra.  Last summer, a participant in the West Coast Connections tour to Costa Rica where she spent three weeks traveling, building a home with Habitat for Humanity, and playing with local children in a day camp, for her "Senior Summer," Rachel served as a Jewish Family Service/Rabbi Gerald Klein Intern, as a camp counselor at the Dallas Arboretum.

Self-described as "one who always tries to have a smile on my face, to be happy and giggling, and the best friend that I can be to everyone," Rachel pegs herself just right.

Yavneh is blessed to have this bright star shining through our halls!
