Yavneh is marching toward a greater technological environment and those needs are being met across the board. We are implementing Senior Systems, a Campus/Yavneh families online program to provide better communications for our administration, our teachers, and our families who will be able to see grades, assignments, attendance and more online.  Yavneh's Library catalog is now accessible online, and we subscribe to ten databases in order to conduct meaningful research online.

This year, we are proud to have awarded nine merit scholarships. The first-time Yavneh Star Scholars Award, presented to Ella Baum, Max Schnitzer, and Mika Stein, who came to Yavneh from secular schools, recognizes qualities of academic merit, citizenship, community service, and a desire for Judaic study in an environment where Jewish tradition, history, culture, and the preparation for success at competitive universities come together.

The Schultz Family Community Service Scholarships, awarded to Evie Denemark, Jori Epstein, Elan Kogutt, Kayley Romick, Gabby Steinbrecher, and Sarah Weiss, celebrates the academic achievement, leadership, Jewish identity, and strong community involvement of current Yavneh students.  Mazal Tov to all of the recipients.

Yavneh's students tend to spend much time thinking of how they can help their fellow human beings and that's a condition that is enhanced through their experience here.  Whether they come to us as freshmen, or if they come to us in later years, we see them wanting to make the world a better place. We're incredibly proud of watching them do, just that.

Onward, to the rest of the year.  Wishing you and yours a healthy and meaningful High Holiday season.
Faculty Feature ~
Susan Reinert   ~~  Yavneh Reception

"Yavneh Academy of Dallas, this is Susan, how can I help you?," is the intro most hear when contacting Yavneh Academy and helping YOU is exactly what Yavneh's new receptionist, Susan Reinert, wants to do.

"I am so excited to be here, to be a part of what is clearly a great place full of meaning, and to be able to help our faculty, our students, and their families," said Susan, who joined the Yavneh staff at the beginning of August.  "Everyone here, across the board, seems very committed to the kids and to bringing the best they can to the plate every day."

Susan, a San Francisco native, and her husband Kenneth, of blessed memory, moved to Dallas 15 years ago, at the time of his retirement from the Marine Corps. The Reinert's have two sons; Josh who lives in Dallas and Paul, who lives in Las Vegas with his wife Nikki, and their children Anthony and Jordyn.

When she's not working, Susan enjoys time with Josh and her puppy Tex.  An avid reader of true-life mysteries, she is also a fine craftswoman who enjoys creating pottery and doing embroidery and crewelwork.

After her husband's passing, Susan decided to return to work, but wanting to incorporate meaning into whatever she was going to do.  A former San Jose State University business and accounting student, Susan had previously forged a career working for appliance parts, sales, and service companies.  Yavneh, the first school she has worked for, "just seemed it," she said - shortly after her first interviews.

"Earline and LuAnn showed me an office that I wanted to connect to, they are just wonderful," said Susan.  "I've learned that life is short and you need to enjoy and appreciate each other.  From the start, Yavneh has felt like home."

To you Susan Reinert, WELCOME HOME.
Yavneh, Class of 2011 ~
Eitan Barak

Transitioning to a new country, new home, and new school is a tall order for a 15-year-old and yet Eitan has made the most of his experience and the opportunities before him.   The positive results he credits to the sense of community at his new school.

"The best part about attending Yavneh for me is the kids," said Eitan, who spends his "free time" playing the guitar and bass, watching tv or movies, and who participated in his debut year at Yavneh as a member of the school's Music Ensemble and on the soccer field as a Yavneh Bulldog!"At Yavneh, it's very easy to become friends with everyone and, to me, the school quickly became like a very big family."

"Eitan is a quiet and intelligent young man who is very competent and who works hard," said Don O'Quinn, Yavneh's Head of School.   "He works diligently in helping his parents assimilate to life in the United States while himself adjusting to new a new culture, language, and community."

"Eitan is one of those rare students whose presence lightens up the entire classroom. His illuminating insights often encourage further discussions and keep the class engaged," said Rabbi Meir Tannenbaum.  "His thoughtful and kind personality are also much appreciated by both his colleagues and his teachers. He is always looking for opportunities to help those around him."

"Yavneh's day of mixing Judaic and General Studies seems like a long one at first but once I got into my classes and the schedule I realized that the division is great and it's an easy transition to make," said Eitan who is looking forward to attending a university next year, with a focus on studying  veterinary medicine .   "It is shown in the colleges that last year's seniors were accepted to that Yavneh manages to keep all its students in line and  I think it's possible that  because we have a spiritual part in our studies, we are able to succeed."

"Eitan is an extremely talented Mathematician and I created a class for him during my off period so that he could work at a faster pace," said Math Chair, Veronica Thomas who, last year taught Eitan's Pre-Calculus course. "He is a very gracious, thankful and disciplined student who will be successful in whatever field he chooses."

"I met Rabbi Yitzchak Cohen during one of his trips to Israel and he told me how great Yavneh was, that helped me decide where to go to school," said Eitan who, born and raised in Israel, moved to the United States last year, settling in Dallas with his parents Inna and Enrique.  Once settled, the family attends services at Rabbi Cohen's Congregation Nishmat Am.  "He told me that when you are a Yavneh student, you become a part of a family and that the teachers are very good and very professional.  He was right and I'm glad this is where I ended up."

Our Yavneh family was enhanced by your presence Eitan and we're proud you are one of us.
Yavneh, Class of 2011 ~
Brittany Barnett

Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Brittany and her family; including parents Michele and Brian and sister Sarah, moved to Plano when she was four. Sister Rachel is a native Texan.  A member of both Congregation Anshai Torah and Chabad of Plano, Brittany is involved in USY, NCSY, and BBYO for whom she served as volunteer coordinator for her Sobolosky chapter.  "Belonging to these organizations makes me proud because it represents my interest in integrating my Judaism into my social life,"said Brittany who has also stepped into the community, representing Yavneh at the Jewish Federation of Greater Dallas' Yom Hazikaron commemorations.

As a member of Yavneh's Bulldog Print staff, Mock Trial Team, Yearbook Crew, YAD Lit Magazine, Yoga Club, Health Occupations Club, HELP/Helping Everyone Live Peacefully, as Hashinui's Environmental Club Recycling Chair, as an actor in Yavneh's theatre program, with roles in "The Diary of Anne Frank," and "Alice in Wonderland," and as a Lady Volleyball and Basketball Bulldog, Brittany shows her spirit and varied interests across campus.

"I decided to attend Yavneh because I was looking for a Jewish environment that would encourage me to pursue my faith but would also allow me the freedom to discover my own path to spirituality," said Brittany, who previously attended the Levine Academy.  "I enjoy Yavneh because its small student body fosters close relationships with those around me, and its lax atmosphere stimulates individual responsibility."

"Brittany is an excellent creative writer, and she has a delightful sense of humor.  She used these gifts to add substance and laughter to many of our class periods," said English teacher, Phyllis Beilue.  "Her classmates and I looked forward to her arrival in class each day and particularly to her projects and presentations, which always demonstrated originality and insight.  Brittany should do well in any field she chooses."

"Yavneh gets its all in by never really separating the Judaic Studies from the secular subjects, because what we learn during the first half of the day can easily be applied to the second," said Brittany who hopes to study in Israel for a gap year, before attending a university.  "Students are successful because Yavneh does not teach students how to be Jewish, it gives them the tools necessary to establish their own religious identity."

"Brittany asks interesting and perceptive questions in class which shows her inquiring mind. She also contributes insightful remarks," said Gloria Boyd who has taught Brittany's Geography and World History courses.  "She was fun to have in class as she has a delightful sense of humor which comes out in some of her remarks in class discussions."

"In life, one's GPA does not matter as much as the close connections that we make and the relationships that I have with friends at school means a lot to me," said Brittany.  "I feel that the leaders at Yavneh recognize that, and that they know that, although studies are very important, a strong set of values, that the rest of one's life will be based on, is more vital to being successful in society."

We hope, Brittany, that you will always feel your connection to Yavneh, to your Dallas community, and to Klal Yisrael.

Reading, writing, arithmetic - Torah, tzedakah, and tikun olam are back in session for the students and faculty of Yavneh Academy and morals, mathematics, and more have everyone's schedules filled.

After the annual Back-to-School Picnic at Churchill Park - many thanks to our student and faculty planners, and parent volunteers, Yavneh's doors opened for the 2010-2011 year on August 16 with 118 students, a 3.4/1 teacher to student ratio, with $775,000 in Tuition Assistance, and another $55,000 in merit scholarships, provided.

"We have students from across the economic and religious spectrum at Yavneh and the mix is tremendous," said Don O'Quinn, Head of School.  "The greatest complement our students give us is the oft repeated 'Yavneh is a family and everybody is somebody at Yavneh."

Yavneh's Parent Teacher Organization held their first meeting of the year (please contact info@yavnehdallas.org for more information about the PTO), parents were put to the task of touring their students' schedules at Meet the Teacher Night, and many of our new parents shared in a "Welcome to Yavneh" breakfast and gathering.

There was much Shalom in the Shabbat of August 27 when Yavneh hosted its largest, and possibly best Shabbaton ever!  "With almost 80 students and the families of four staff members, the ruach, food, davening, learning, and most importantly - the bonding was incredible," said Naomi Schrager, Associate Principal and Judaic Programming Director.

"Having this Shabbaton at the beginning of the year allows our student body to really come together as a family. Experiencing a Shabbat together gives us the chance to get to know each other outside of the classroom setting, where there are no academic expectations, no homework or tests - just good food, good singing, and good friends."

Mazal Tov to Justine Berman '12, the daughter of Leora Lurie and Peter Berman, who was selected as Dallas' 2010 Sprint Youth Community Champion. As the recipient of this award, Justine has received a $2500 grant from the Sprint Foundation, which she has chosen to share with the Equest Therapeutic Horsemanship, an organization that assists riders with over 100 physical, cognitive and emotional diagnoses. An organization that has been Justine's passion for four years.

"We are very appreciative of the donation on Justine's behalf to Equest," said Ellie Grant, Volunteer Director for Equest.  "$2500 might cover eight months of care for one of our horses, it might be a scholarship for six or more riders, and it might be used to purchase saddles for hundreds of riders to use."

"Justine gives of her time and energy far beyond the average teenager," said Allyn Schmucker, Yavneh's Guidance Director.  "Her heart is wide open to help those with special needs. She has won the respect of those in charge by her honest concern for the kids and their needs and her concern and care for the horses as well."

"Justine appreciates the beauty life has to offer," said Mrs. Schmucker.  "Bumps in the road are just that; never insurmountable, and Justine is a young lady who embraces life and all it has to offer. She understands a challenge and refuses to allow anything to slow her down."

"I've always loved horses and coming to Equest started as a one-summer project and that year I logged more than 300 hours," said Justine who has received the organization's Rookie of the Year and other volunteer department awards.  "I didn't realize the impact it would have on me."

"So many of us take for granted our physical and mental functions and to see the growth and development of the riders I work with makes me a better person," said Justine who this year assisted riders at the Texas Special Olympics.  "You can see the progress of a rider in a year, some in a week, and whether it's in their walking, their speech, or otherwise, you see how they function better in everyday life."

"Justine is an incredibly dedicated and devoted volunteer and we are so proud of her," said Ms. Grant.  "She has a very special way with people and animals, she's worked with riders of all levels and she doesn't shy away from any task or responsibility.  Her heart and empathy sets her apart from others, something very rare in such a young lady."

Notes from Nurse Donnenfield

Should your student require medication at school, please review the school guidelines. These are taken from the Department of State Health Services.

  • Any medication administered to a student in a Texas school must have a written request/authorization from the student's parent or legal guardian and must be in the original container and properly labeled.
  • Administration of Over The Counter (OTC) medication requires a written request from the parent and must be in its original and properly labeled container. Long-term need for OTC medication may indicate the need for clinical evaluation and possible treatment.
  • Parents MUST provide OTC medication.
  • An OTC medication may be given for 5 days or 3 times before requiring health care provider authorization.
  • Self-administration prescription asthma medicine by students, allowed with prescribed medication for that student, written parental and physician authorization. Epi-pens are included in self-administration, though not part of the Education Code.

The attached forms will be helpful should you need to send medication to school.

Thank you for your help and patience.

INKLINGS FROM ISRAEL ~~ Asriel Agronin '09

I returned to Israel to continue my studies at Yeshivat Lev HaTorah in Beit Shemesh. I am studying at the same Yeshiva as I did last year, having made the decision to return to give me the opportunity to continue to increase my Jewish knowledge, and understanding of our values, before I matriculate.

I decided on a second year at Lev HaTorah because I loved the environment and the group of guys here makes it one big family.

Shalom, from Israel
