Yavneh Academy of Dallas May 2010 * Nisan/Sivan 5770 |
a note from Nurse Susan Donnenfield: Recent recalls of popular over-the-counter medications for children, as well as past recalls, have prompted Yavneh to limit over-the-counter medications to students and faculty.
Should your student require such medication, please bring in the approved medication and complete a permission form. Hopefully, this will not be an inconvenience. This is being done for liability issues only and your understanding is so appreciated.
Thank you for your help and please contact the school nurse anytime. Susan Donnenfield,RN 214.295.3400 ext1612

A message from Don O'Quinn ~ Head of School | 2009-2010 is almost a memory and, while we are busily preparing for finals and graduation, we reflect on a great year; one filled with experiences our students and faculty will not soon forget, academic, sports, and other accomplishments that will long be noted in Yavneh's history books.
We've added soccer and karate to our sports offerings and added a PSAT/SAT/ACT workshop series. Our Uniting Students of Dallas raised more than $15,000 and welcomed Texas' State Supreme Court Chief Justice, Students Against Terrorism raised more than $42,000 for the children of Sderot, and our newest organization, Students 4 Students, raised $5,000 toward the building of a school for the children of Ethiopia.
We've had awards on the local, state, and national level for our Bulldog Print, for our poets, and for many of our students in their own extracurricular activities. It is the individual interests of our students, combined with that which we provide on-Campus, that makes Yavneh, Yavneh.
In April we welcomed guests from Winnipeg, Canada, who toured our campus with local writer Harriet Gross, as guests of the Women's League for Conservative Judaism's IntraContinental Regional Conference. To say they were impressed, is an understatement of great proportion. This, I'm proud to say, is the response we receive regularly by guests from both near and far. Sharing our Campus, our students, and our faculty, is a incredible honor for me.
2009-2010, almost a memory, is one we'll cherish! Thank you for being a part of all of it!
Don O'Quinn

Yavneh, Class of 2010 ~ Sarah Rohan
|
"I chose to attend Yavneh
in order to further my modern-Orthodox Jewish education and what I found is
that the unique experience that is
Yavneh, is that the teachers have not just taught me algebra or history, but they
have also shown me how to lead a meaningful and Jewish lifestyle."
"Sarah
is a diligent, dogged, determined student who succeeds far beyond her already
impressive natural abilities because of her really strong work ethic," said
Science faculty chair, Dr. Steven Goldfine. "In class, she always knew the answer, always had the
creative insight, and always asked the question everyone else wanted to ask -
she was just an amazing student."
Yavneh ensures that
students succeed in mastering both the Judaic and Secular studies offered and, because
half of the day is devoted to Judaic courses, students and teachers must work
together both inside and outside the classroom," said Sarah. "Many times throughout my high-school
career, teachers have held additional classes during lunch, after school or on
Sundays to make sure that each student gains a more than adequate understanding
of a certain subject. This practice is not only advantageous academic-wise, but
it also allows students to forge a more personal and special relationship with
their instructors."
Sarah, who looks forward
to spending the 2010-11 year as a participant of Bar Ilan's Israel Experience,
hopes to return to the States to major in government or politics. She's been accepted to the University
of Michigan and the University of Texas' Liberal Arts Honors Program and she
has her eye set on eventually attending law school. "I hope someday to work in Israel relations," she said.
"The best part about
attending Yavneh is the kids.
Because of the small student body, it has been easy for me to get to know
each one of my classmates and each student has something unique to offer
whether it is an illuminating insight, thought provoking idea, or a joke," said
Sarah. "My classmates are fun
loving and, at the same time, eager to learn. They are what make Yavneh such a special place for me."
Sarah spent the summer of
2008 at Brown University and as a member of Dallas' Maccabiah Volleyball
team. In 2009, she was a sports
counselor at Camp Lavi in Pennsylvania.
A Dallas native and the
daughter of Terri and Richard and sister of Abby and Emily '12, Sarah is a
member of Congregation Shaare Tefilla.
She has served on the Jewish Federation of Greater Dallas' Jewish Youth
Tzedakah Foundation, played for four years on the Lady Bulldogs Basketball and
Volleyball teams, participated on Yavneh's Mock Trial Team, and served three
years as newspaper staff of The Bulldog
Print, including a term as the paper's Managing Editor.
A four-year board
member of Students Against Terrorism, Sarah led this year's Points-for-Peace
tournament, the eighth annual event, as that group's president. "We are very proud of the commitment of our
volunteers, the participants, and the outcome of Points for Peace 2010 and
excited to be able to make a difference in spearheading One Family Fund's
Sderot AfterShock Project," said Sarah, thrilled with the more than
$41,000 that was raised at the March 21 event, with 57 teams of boys and girls,
men and women."Students Against Terrorism is just one of many
active programs at Yavneh where the students take the lead and where we learn
skills that we will be able to apply to our lives."
"Points
for Peace is an example of the kind of good we want to continue," said
Sarah. "Good that supports a cause that is so much bigger than
ourselves."
Sarah
is one to always think bigger, always better, and always of how to support the
cause. We're ready to see her
support the world.

Yavneh, Class of 2010 ~ Sergiy Rozhdestvenskyy
|
For
Sergiy, who transferred from the American Hebrew Academy in North Carolina to
Yavneh as a junior, returning to the local Jewish education scene was
important. "Having been at Levine
Academy since the fifth grade, I had become very accustomed
to the atmosphere and, when I returned, I knew it would be easy to pick back up
right where I left off. Yavneh is
a school of few people, but people that I would not
leave for any others. It was the only school for me."
"I love the school because I knew everyone's name
and they know mine and I like having small classes and an open learning
environment," said Sergiy.
"Yavneh's students are interested in learning which greatly contributes
to the school's success. The teachers receive that interest well and in return
help the students because they truly personally invest in the students on a
daily basis."
"Sergiy adds so much to Yavneh
Academy. His classmates and I valued his comments and appreciated his
keen sense of humor," said English teacher, Phyllis Beilue. "I am sure he spoke for many of them
when, on several occasions, he drolly asked, 'What's the point?' It is a
question worth asking in the process of style analysis, and he really did want
an answer. My reply often was, 'Stay with me, and I think you will see.'"
"Sergei did stay with the class and with
the tasks at hand," said Mrs. Beilue.
"He is an excellent writer with the ability to engage his reader.
Sergei is personable and delightful, a breath of fresh air. I know that
he will be as successful in the future as he is now because he has a positive
attitude, great ability, and an appreciation of little things."
"The combination of the dedicated staff that shares
an honest interest in the students, with a student body that wants to learn,
makes it a place that can add five more classes without running into problems,"
said Sergiy, of Yavneh's dual curriculum program - providing a top college
preparatory education alongside its premiere Judaic curriculum. "To me it is no surprise that Yavneh
'gets it all in.'"
"When I see a teacher outside
of class, I feel compelled to say hello, not simply to show respect but because
I actually enjoy the interactions I have with my teachers," said Sergiy. "My teachers do more than just teach me
the required materials, they've become my mentors and they've taught me how to
be a person."
Born in Kiev, Ukraine, Sergiy
moved to Dallas in 1999 with his parents, Natasha and Michael, and his siblings
Misha and Katia. He is a member Yavneh's
Chess Team and of Congregation Anshai Torah. He thanks Rabbi and Wende Weinberg to a great extent for
their guidance and assistance and for
much of his knowledge."
Accepted to
Case Western University, Drexel University, Texas A&M, the University of
Florida, the University of Miami, and University of Texas at Dallas, Sergiy
wants to pursue a career in computer engineering or chemical research.
The calm and quiet gentleman
that Sergiy is, whatever his pursuit, it will be with consideration and
compassion.

Yavneh, Class of 2010 ~ Adam Sallmander
|
"At
Yavneh, our full 8 to 5 day means getting it all in and then some with
extracurricular activities like sports, The
Bulldog Print news, drama, community service, and many clubs including Mock
Trial and Debate," said Adam, who chose to attend Yavneh, in order to build on
the Jewish foundation he received at
Akiba Academy. "I think that while
our contemporaries will be sweating the adaptation from high school to college,
Yavneh students will be finding a break of sorts."
"I have enjoyed my time
at Yavneh so immensely because I can be an individual," said Adam, "while
maintaining a strong sense of community among my friends, schoolmates, teachers
and faculty."

"Mr. O'Quinn has been my
guardian angel, my Jiminy Cricket, my Fairy Godmother, my Genie in the lamp,"
said Adam. "Behind his desk, or
behind the scenes, he has worked with me every step of the way to give me the
best Yavneh experience possible."
"It is always nice to
have a Sallmander in class and get to know another of the siblings," said
English teacher, Phyllis Beilue.
"Adam is a rather quiet but friendly student who has a ready
smile. I appreciate his effort, his work ethic, and his positive
attitude."
"Adam seems to have a true appreciation for learning and enjoys
success. He has excellent rapport with his peers, and I know that he will
be successful in life," said Mrs. Beilue. "He is a fine young man
with a good heart."
"I love to make people
laugh and often use humor to cheer someone up or to ease tension in an awkward
or uncomfortable situation," said Adam.
"I have a special relationship with my friends at school because it has
been built up over years of shared experiences. There are kids who have been in my grade so long that I
cannot recall a time in my life before I knew them."
A native of Northridge, California, who moved to Dallas when he was just two-years-old, the son of Mickie and Pam
and brother of Yoni '03 and Maya '06, as well as younger sister
Gabi, Adam belongs to Congregation Shaare Tefilla. He has been a Yavneh Bulldog, playing for the school's
basketball, soccer, and tennis teams and a member of Yavneh's Theatre
department with roles in A Dybbuk, The Miracle Worker, and Hershel and the Hanukkah Goblins.
Summertime respite for Adam
has included traveling with his family, working at Akiba's Camp Mazal and as a volunteer with the Bnai Brith Youth Organization's Operation
Shema program, helping to build up a park for inner-city youth, working at a
kids' camp, and at a recreation center.
Adam, who continues to
follow Yoni and Maya with a year in Israel, where he will
study at Yeshivat Reishit Yerushalayim, hopes to then set his own footpath. Accepted thus far to the University of
Kansas, Adam is still pondering his future, knowing only that it will "involve
helping people and be something that I know I will be passionate about."
Passion is something Adam
holds as a treasure, close to heart.
It will be our bracha to soon see where he brings this passion, as for
all he encounters, he will leave a mark.

Yavneh, Class of 2010 ~ Becky Schisler |
When I visited Yavneh's campus, it was beautiful. I could envision myself there. It felt right," said Becky who transferred to Yavneh from Allen High School at the start of her junior year. "Before Yavneh I was at Allen High School, student population 5,000, Jewish population: Evan and I. I wanted high school to be a positive experience, and felt that at Yavneh, it would be."
"It's so much easier to be motivated and college driven when everyone around you is," said Becky. "I feel that the majority of students at Yavneh care tremendously about their education."
"At Yavneh, you don't feel like a number," said Becky. "Unlike at Allen High, which has 5,000 students, the faculty and administration here really care about you. You're treated as a human being and you're given so much trust, so much freedom. You learn independence. Students who really push themselves can go so far. It's good practice for the real world."
Accepted to Bard College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Tulane University, the University of Texas, and Wesleyan University, Becky plans to pursue a career that involves writing. "I don't know for sure where I'll be, but definitely somewhere beautiful with a substantial amount of Jews," said Becky. "I would be really depressed if I had no one to eat latkes and matzah with. I know what it's like to be the only Jew out of thousands and thousands of people, and that's not what I want for college."
"The sky is the limit for Becky Schisler!" said Dr. Tim Cloward, Assistant Principal and Social Studies and Creative Writing teacher. "I have never seen a student who has developed so many skills so extensively by their senior year."
"As the years started, we had the creative writing teacher, the music teacher, the visual art instructor, and the journalism teacher all fighting over her for their classes," said Dr. Cloward. "Becky's major problem, as she looks to the future, will be deciding which of her many skills to concentrate on. I personally hope it is her writing, as her work is already as developed and mature as any high school student I have ever worked with."
A native of Atlanta, Georgia, Becky, the daughter of Howell Schisler and Avi and Shelley, and sister to Saul, Evan '10, Leora '11, Jonah '13, Sam, Tammy, and Jacquie, moved to Dallas when she was just a few months old. A member of Congregation Shearith Israel, Becky is a member of the ZOHAR chapter of United Synagogue Youth, and has served on USY's International General Board as editor of the organization's religious newsletter, Bo'er Ba'esh, as SWRegion VP of Religion, Education, and Culture and as ZOHAR chapter president.
"USY gave me Judaism," said Becky who has visited Israel, the Czech Republic, Lithuania, and Poland with the organization. "Before I joined I didn't feel any sort of connection to religion at all. I went home from my first trip with a strong, newly developed Jewish identity and Judaism had become an essential part of my everyday life."
On campus connections, Becky is a staffer of Yavneh's The Bulldog Print staff, Becky has been artist, cartoonist, reporter and, this year, a columnist (The Beck Burner)and, as an accomplished musician, Becky is a member of the Music Ensemble.
The best part of Yavneh? But there are so many! Mr. O'Quinn. Every time I tell him 'Thank You' he says I have nothing to thank him for, but I owe him so much. I've never seen someone so respected, valued, and admired by every single person who knows him-child or adult. He's like Dumbledore-except better. His physics class was great too, it was almost philosophical. I've never enjoyed science before, but he somehow makes everything he talks about compelling. I think the only person I've ever met who's had as much blind faith in me is my Grandmother," said Becky. "The cereal. The tree in the lobby (yes, I thought it was real for a while). The Student Lounge. Free periods. The relaxed environment. Wearing skirts. The freedom. The freedom. The freedom. For me Yavneh has been this warm, safe environment where I could take risks, grow as a person...and I know that I did."
We've watched you risk, we've watched you grow, and we know that wherever life takes you, Becky, the meaning of your soul will shine through.

Yavneh, Class of 2010 ~ Micah Steinbrecher
|
"The best part about
attending Yavneh is the amount of freedom that the faculty presents the
students," said Micah. "We are
granted the ability to start organizations that we believe will add to the
culture of the school, to change the world, to learn from, to give to, or to
just 'be.'"
Like many students, Micah
chose to attend Yavneh in order to continue his Jewish education and he
graduates, having "enjoyed attending Yavneh because of the close knit
relationships between students and teachers who are always willing to help out
whenever we show a genuine interest or need for help."
"Micah is an excellent student who is very serious about his family, career and
Yavneh," said math teacher, Veronica Thomas. "I enjoyed teaching Micah and am sure that he will make
Yavneh very proud soon."
Accepted
to Brandeis University, University of Texas , Washington University in St.
Louis, Yeshivat Eretz HaTzvi, and Yeshivat Orayta, Micah plans to spend next
year in Israel, returning to the U.S. to study to become a doctor. "I
feel that it is important to spend time exploring the roots of my Jewish
culture," said Micah, "as well as to take advantage of religious learning
opportunities that are not available in America."
"There is so much to say about Micah," said Rabbi Meir Tannenbaum. "He is one of the rare students who
comprehends and processes information faster than the teacher can provide it,
yet his greatness extends beyond his academic prowess. Micah is such a
respectful and polite student, and an absolute joy to have in the classroom."
Involved in many aspects
of Yavneh's extra-curricular schedule, Micah was a participant, for four years,
of the school's Mock Trial and Debate teams, the Health Occupation's Club, and
he's been a member of HELP; Helping Everyone Live Peacefully - for which he
also served as President. He has
been a staff member of The Bulldog Print newspaper and Yavneh's Music Ensemble,
as well as a constant on the courts for the Bulldog Basketball and Tennis
teams.
The summer before his Junior year, Micah spent two weeks in Baltimore at Operation
Shema, a volunteer program of BBYO where he volunteered in the inner city
teaching kids and repairing old parks. Servicing the local community as well, Micah also spent
several weeks volunteering at Dallas' JCC Tennis Camp. A rising senior, in addition to
shadowing doctors, providing insight to a future in the medical fiels, Micah spent
three weeks volunteering at Bea's Kids,an educational and personal development program for
children from low-income families.
A Dallas native, and the
son of Jacob and Janyce, and the eldest sibling of Gabby '12, Adam, and David,
prior to Yavneh, Micah attended Akiba Academy from preschool through eighth
grade. Micah served as treasurer for his Kaplan, BBYO
chapter and, as a regular attendee of Congregation Shaare Tefilla, following
his sophomore year at Yavneh, Micah found himself becoming more observant in
his own Jewish practice. "I
am most proud that I am an Orthodox Jew," he said. "This decision followed a logical step; if I believe in G-d
and in Judaism, than I felt I should practice Jewish halachah to the best of my
ability."
"Beyond his sterling character is Micah's
continuous spiritual journey. He is never satisfied with his religious commitments
and moral accomplishments," said Rabbi Tannenbaum. "He is always seeking to do, grow, and learn even more. I
can only hope that he continues to follow in this incredible trail that he has
blazed for himself."
A trailblazer, a student of his heritage, a future
doctor - Micah will search, find, and heal - and we'll be the better for having
been there from the beginning.

Yavneh News and Review
|
~~ Apologies to Lane Goldenberg and Justin Katz whose names were missing from the list of talents in the March Literary Cafe! Kol hakavod for your efforts!
~~ YOM HASHOAH: report by Naomi Schrager artwork by Bess Reisberg '10
Every year on Yom Hashoah, we take time to reflect on the tremendous tragedy of the Holocaust. We remember those who were murdered, and speak of their legacies, thus ensuring that they are not forgotten- that they did not die in vain.
This year, Yavneh focused on 'churban Europa' or the destruction of Jewish life and culture in Europe before WW2. Yavneh students read selected readings about particular communities in Europe- both major cities like Warsaw, and much smaller 'shtetls.' The students listened as their peers described the richness of Jewish life in those areas, and then were struck when they realized that today, due to the atrocities of the Shoah, none of those communities still exist. The program ended as we reminding ourselves that we choose to commemorate the Shoah not on the day of liberation at the hands of others, but on the day when those brave fighters in the Warsaw ghetto stood up to the Nazis and said 'we are Jews, and we will fight for ourselves'.
Students were reminded that, while throughout our history Judaism has been something we have died for, it is also something we have always fought for. For our students, this message means dedicating their lives to Jewish continuity and never giving up the fight which has been going on for thousands of years.
~~ YOM Ha'ZIKARON & YOM Ha'ATZMAUT: report by Leigh Bonner & Naomi Schrager
On Yom Hazikaron, student council and the Hebrew department put together a meaningful and very poignant multimedia program. There were poems, songs, images on screen, and selected readings. The mood was somber and students were reminded that while Israel is our homeland, there are men and women who put their lives at risk everyday to ensure that the hopes and dreams of Jews for thousands of years remains a reality. The students were also read the stories of two MIAs, Ron Arad and Gilad Shalit, whose tragic stories remain at the forefront of our tefillot and thoughts.
"These soldiers also deserve a day of remembrance, for their fight exists not only on the battle field, but they must fight mentally as well to never give up hope that they will one day be rescued, and that their plight will end," said Leigh Bonner '11, as she introduced a number of Yavneh student speaker. "These soldiers are ingrained in the minds of the Israeli people, and it should be the same for us."
"The Jewish people will always have time when our light is eclipsed and darkness consumes, but the moon always reappears, and success prevails," read Leigh. "While the ceremony was somber and the Yavneh community understood the battle ahead, we also knew that we had a home, a place where our past, present and future all merged together in the form of the State of Israel. In the Yizkor prayer it says, '[t]hey were swifter than eagles, stronger than lions to carry out the will of their Maker and the desire of their Creator.' May we remember those who we have lost, and thank them for keeping us safe."
On Yom Ha'Atzmaut, we celebrated Yavneh style! A spirited davening, with the majority of our students wearing blue and white, was followed with the learning about Israel's cultural, political, and religious history, they prepared Israeli salads and baked cakes - decorated with the map of Israel, and they created a collage of photographs of Israel, that now line the upstairs halls of the Yavneh classroom building, and other pieces of art, also on display.
~~ STUDENTS 4 STUDENTS - SCREENINGS TO BUILD A SCHOOL!
Brick by brick, stone by stone, that's how the students of Yavneh's Students 4 Students will make a difference and that construction of the heart began on April 22 with the screenings of "Bewoket: By the Will of G-d" and "Making the Crooked Straight," stories of Dr. Rick Hodes, the mentor who has inspired the project. At the First Annual S4S Movie night, the students raised $5000, half of the monies needed to start building a school in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. S4S members Dalit Agronin '12, Tamar Cohen '12, Evie Denemark '12, Jori Epstein '12, Kelly Herson '13, Sheera Krengel '12, Emily Rosenfeld '12, Rachel Siegel '13, and sponsor Sharon Weinstein coordinated the Angelika Film Center Dallas event. "This is what Yavneh kids do, they make change happen, and they don't wait for someone else to take charge," said Don O'Quinn, Head of School, with regard to Yavneh's newest humanitarian organization. If history repeats, the group will follow Yavneh's many clubs including Students Against Terrorism, HELP; Helping Everyone Live Peacefully, Hashinui/Environmental Change, Uniting Students in Dallas, and Invisible Children in making a difference. "I'm proud of the kids and excited to see our students, once again, find a passion and make it their own to conquer." "I'm thrilled that Dallasites are learning more about my work and my life," said Dr. Hodes, Medical Director, American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee in Ethiopia, and the subject of the recently published This is a Soul, The Mission of Rick Hodes. "I think it's fantastic that they will see how kids on the other side of the world have a far-smaller number of choices in their lives, and maybe no choices at all. Many are simply trying to survive." The Hodes family first connected to Dallas' Jewish community when, in 2002, Dr. Hodes, an unmarried Orthodox Jew from the United States, who adopted Simegnew and Djene (whom he met at Mother Teresa's Mission), brought his sons to Texas Scottish Rite Hospital. Both boys had suffered from tuberculosis of the spine, leaving them with severe angles in their backs. Doctors at Scottish Rite performed surgeries to fuse the boys' vertebrae, inserting rods, screws, and wires to give the boys added support. During their recoveries, and subsequent visits to Dallas, the boys stayed at the home of Ron Romaner and Jaynie Schultz (parents of Yavneh's, Ben '12) and they attended Akiba Academy, with Simegnew later continuing on to attend Yavneh Academy.
Many thanks to sponsors of the evening: Elementary Sponsors; Dia & Barry Epstein, Ginger Karren, Carol & Mark Kreditor, Lis & Robert Liener, Cindy & Dr. Mitch Moskowitz, Karen & Mike Zucker, Collegiate Sponsors; Lizzy & Dr. Jules Greif, Ruthy & Steven Rosenberg, Lisa & Charles Siegel, Leslie & Howard Schultz, and Graduate Sponsors; Jaynie Schultz & Ron Romaner, Ann Rosenberg, Nicole & Andy Schultz, and Rabbi David Stern. "I met Dejene when I was in the second grade and our friendship has endured," said Rachel, co-founder of Students 4 Students. "Knowing him, knowing the family, and respecting all that Dr. Hodes does, is what has inspired us. We're very excited about the response to our program and looking forward to continuing the effort." "G-d gave me a gift," said Dejene, who spoke at the screening, and who hopes to return to attend Yavneh in the fall. "He took away my family who died, but G-d gave me the gift of a whole other world. Thank you all for your help and it's good to be 'home!' To make a donation to Students 4 Students, contact Rachel Siegel at 214-930-6901 or email students4students613@gmail.com

Bruchim Habaim ~~ Yavneh guests share education, davening and d'vrei Torah
|
~ Lone Soldiers of the IDF
Walking across the
Schultz Rosenberg Campus in their uniforms, IDF Lone Soldiers Alexi Kochetkov
and Abe Lapson, didn't look much older than Yavneh's own high school
population, yet they walked with a poise, a strength, a confidence that would
leave anyone in their stead, proud to have them in service. The two soldiers were
brought to Yavneh by Meirav Yaaran, Senior Campaign
Associate for the Jewish Federation of Greater Dallas and Director of Café
Israel, on behalf of the Federation.
"Twenty-seven percent of the monies raised through our annual campaign
support programs overseas including the Jewish Agency for Israel, which
sponsors the Lone Soldiers," said Meirav.
"The admiration we feel when speaking to these young men, who have left
their families to support Israel.
It takes a very special person to pursue this life and we are grateful
to them."
With very different
stories; Abe from Chicago, born to Russian parents and of a Grandfather, his dear
Shimson who, born in Poland, spent his life wanting to reach the Promised Land,
to live a Zionist life, and Alexi, from Smolensk, Russia. "My Grandfather, who was
orphaned at just two-years-old, was drafted to the Polish army. After WWII he fled to Russia, always
wanted to go to Israel. With my
Mother and Father in the early 1980's he came to the United States and raised
me in Jewish Day Schools, proud to be the Jew that all of their lives, they had
to stifle." At 17, Abe made
aliyah, joined the IDF and trained as a combat soldier. Today, at 23, he is a 1st
Lieutenant and Platoon Commander, "fighting to give back. In Hatikvah, we sing about 'The Hope,"
said Abe. "My life is now about
fighting for our 2000-plus year old dream." Alexi found himself, at
14-years-old, realizing that a number of boys in his community were also
Jewish, although none felt safe in letting another know. "You couldn't be Jewish 'out loud,'" he
said. "But we found ourselves a
club where we discovered Shabbat, the holidays, and prayer." At 19, Alexi moved to Israel to
participate in an education program in the Sinai, before moving to Jerusalem to
study music. An accomplished
violinist, who played a number of pieces he himself arranged for the Yavneh
audience, Alexi joined the IDF two years ago and he's an arranger for the
army's musical groups. "The
Israeli army is different than any other," he said. "I love that I go to a
school that has, as a focus, the interest to bring in such incredible guests;
soldiers and doctors, lawyers and scientists, and so many others, to show us
the world," said Zoe Elewitz '11. "This
was my first opportunity to meet and speak with IDF soldiers and it's inspiring
to learn, not only of their different backgrounds, but how alike they now
sound, and how they are both willing to risk their lives for their new homeland." "The Israeli army builds
relationships that are unique," said Abe, while Alexi nodded in agreement. "We are, as David Ben Gurion once said,
a 'melting pot.' These are people you would never, under any other
circumstances, meet. The people
you work with, those above you and those who are your subordinates, are all
your friends and they become your family.
You'd go out on the line for them."

Yavneh's Mitzvah Makers ~ Students, Faculty, and Alumni Making a Difference
| HATS OFF TO, OR BETTER YET ON, THANKS TO EVIE DENEMARK - Mazal Tov to Evie Denemark '12 (with Yoav Apelboim, Director of Ahava Village for Children) who was honored at Bnai Zion's Annual Brunch on May 2. Bnai Zion thanked Evie for creating warmth, of her kindness, and of her hands, as she's knitted close to 60 caps, in a variety of colors and patterns, for the children of the Ahava Village.
Ahava is a residential center for 250 children, ages six to 18, from high-risk home situations. "I can knit, which I love, and help those in need at the same time," said Evie. "Seeing the picture and receiving the poster made me realize how thankful the children were for the hats that I made. I hope to be able to make more hats, and eventually to visit the village and meet the children in person."
"Evie is a compassionate and loving student who, upon hearing about the need for caps to keep the children warm, took it upon herself to knit this head gear for the kids. We had noidea how talented and how quickly she could accomplish this task, but once started she never stopped," said Avrille Harris-Cohen, Director, Texas Region of Bnai Zion.
