| A message from Don O'Quinn ~ Head of School |

2010 - and so a new decade begins. And even so, we are working on next year, accepting applications, preparing our courseload and schedules, realizing the growth and advancement that Yavneh experiences each year.
This school year is flying fast and, before we know it, we will be on Pesach break, our seniors will be experiencing the March of the Living, and we'll be wrapping up another wonderful year.
The administration is in the process of implementing Senior Systems, a complete school administration integrated single-database system, that will allow, among other details, for parents to check their students grades and progress online.
We are upgrading our electronic library, providing workshops for SAT and ACT testing, and preparing to open a Writing Lab, to follow the format of our Math Lab which, since opened earlier this year, has been a great help to many students.
This week we premiere Yavneh's Theatre Department production of "A Dybbuk," (Thursday @ 7:30pm and Sunday at 2:30pm in Pollman Hall) our Junior Varsity Basketball players will compete in League Finals (TONIGHT at 7pm is the HOME game),and on Monday we'll host our Annual Blood Drive (8:30am-4:30pm).
Yavneh is bustling. Yavneh is bright. Yavneh is all of us, making it all happen.
Don O'Quinn

Faculty Feature ~ Chris Northrup~ Mathematics
|
|
A native of Motor City
U.S.A, Detroit, Yavneh's latest edition to the Math department, Chris Northrup, plays his own tune both
in and outside the classroom. The
son of Robert and Christine, and brother to Sean and Robert, in December Mr.
Northrup celebrated his first anniversary with his bride Pierre. He hopes to go to graduate school at
some point and, in the meantime, spends his off-time playing the guitar, riding
his bike, tricks and all, and traveling.
"I didn't grow up a 'math
kid,' I really wasn't good at it but it finally clicked," said Mr. Northrup,
who received a B.S. in Mathematics from the University of North Texas. "I started out as a philosophy major
and that was just too much 'what if.'
I like being able to prove that I'm right and in math, there's a right
and a wrong."
"I had to work much
harder in college than I had before, and much more than I expected but I liked
it and I enjoyed learning what I wanted to," said Mr. Northrup. "I took my time
figuring out what I'd do but once I did, I loved it and I love teaching math
and helping students figure it out."
"Mr. Northrup is awesome and he takes time to help us out whenever we need," said Sahar
David '10. "Before class, after,
during lunch - whenever we need help, he's there and he helps math make sense."
"I love being at Yavneh
and I'm amazed at what this school has to offer its students. I wish there had been a school like
this for me when I was in high school," said Mr. Northrup. "The teachers here take their students
education very seriously and the kids really work hard. "
Mr. Northrup is a great teacher with wonderful
ideas on teaching that stick with me," said Rachel Rudberg '13. "Mr. Northrup is an outstanding teacher
and he is very understanding - always there if you don't fully understand what
is being taught."
"It's cool seeing the
relationships between the kids and the staff be so close - there's so much to
work on together from the classtime to all of the extracurricular activities and
it seems the kids never get tired of being on campus," said Mr. Northrup. "So much togetherness really gives me,
as a teacher, time to guide and relate to the kids and that's great."

Yavneh, Class of 2010 ~ Paige Koeppel
|
|
"I
wanted to attend a high school with a close Jewish environment and that IS
Yavneh. My friends at Yavneh are
like family and it doesn't matter what grade you're in or what school you came
from, everyone is kind and accepting to each other," said Paige. "Although at times I wish I went to a
larger school, I realize how lucky I am to have the opportunity to become so
close to all my classmates."
"The
faculty truly cares about the welfare of the students and the bond that Yavneh
provides, between students and teachers is something I love," said Paige. "Although we still have a full
compliment of our general studies, what's nice is that in our Judaic classes we
sometimes learn concepts that apply to our general studies as well."
"Two years
ago, many of my smiles and laughs were due to Paige, whose interesting take on
life brightened my days," said English teacher, Dr. Paula Harvey. "We 'got' one another. Paige is also a
hard worker. Even though essay writing was not her favorite activity (she's
not entirely alone there), Paige always put forth her best effort. She is
one of the most highly motivated students I know. Paige's endeavors have
certainly paid off, as her recent AP test results indicate."
The Dallas
native and graduate of Levine Academy, Paige is the daughter of Debbie and
Peter, sister to Alex, and a member of Temple Emanu-el. She is a longtime team member and
Captain of the JCC Gems Gymnastics Team, and a member of DAFTY (Dallas Area Federation
of Temple Youth), TACT (Teenage Acting Communications Theatre).
At
Yavneh, Paige is on the Tennis Team, she has served as Vice President and
Volunteer Coordinator of HELP (Helping Everybody Live Peacefully), she has
handled public relations for Yavneh's Theatre Department and she has portrayed
the roles of Helen Keller in "The Miracle Worker," a goblin in "Hershel and the
Hanukah Goblins," and TweedleDee in "Alice in Wonderland."
"Paige entered my speech
class each day with enthusiasm and a love for life! What a treat it
was to see her smiling face come through my door," said Rhonda Russell. "Her presentations were exciting and
were always received with interest from the other students. It was
apparent that she had prepared carefully with the intention of making her
speeches entertaining."
"Anyone who meets Paige knows within seconds that
she is a very special young lady," said Ms. Russell. "She obviously will be a young woman in charge of her
destiny who will help others and who will brighten the lives of many."
Still determining her future, Paige is considering
spending a year in Israel. Once on
the path to studying for her future, she plans to study communications or
acting. A lover of travel, Paige has spent recent summers,
in addition to training in gymnastics and acting classes, visiting Russia,
Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Estonia, and Germany and as a participant on Young
Judaea's Machon program in Israel. "I've loved visiting Israel, the whole experience," said
Paige. "Each trip has been
different, I've learned a lot and seen a lot, and I've loved being with the people
on each of the trips. I'm really
looking forward to the March and to what might come next year."
While forever boasting a giggle, and a hug, we know
Paige will always light up the stage that is her life.

Yavneh, Class of 2010 ~ Joseph Lerer
|
|
Yavneh has been a family affair
for Joe Lerer as it was the experiences of cousin Charlie Saginaw '07 that made
an impression on the 2007 graduate. "When I was in
eighth grade, Charlie raved about Yanveh and how great of a place Yavneh was
and he told me that I would love the kids and the unique Yavneh
atmosphere. He was right and
Yavneh has become my home."
"Yavneh students are eclectic with kids
from all different Judaic backgrounds, who start out with disparate interests
and experiences, and by the end of four years become a family," said Joe. "Although all 37 of the seniors will be
scattered around the country next year, I know that our friendships exceed
distance and that we will all remain as tightly bonded as we are now."
"As for the Yavneh faculty, the are great. Our teachers are always helpful and
interested in what's going on in our lives and every teacher holds a valuable
place in the Yavneh world," said Joe. "Also the Rabbinic faculty at Yavneh enlightens everybody's day as
they are always there to put a smile on your
face or challenge your core ethics in a healthy manner. Through my Judaic
classes I learned to ask the right questions and struggle with moral and
ethical dilemmas through Talmud and Chumash. A
better word for teachers at Yavneh would be friends. Every teacher I have had
over the past four years has been exceptional, and the Yavneh administration is
unmatched."
"Honestly, Joe is an exceptionally smart and perceptive
young man whose contributions to class always made my day," said Science
teacher, Dr. Steven Goldfine. "That
said, I am still peeved at him for leaving town to go off to Thailand last year
(class was just never the same after he left) and for taking AP Physics rather
than AP Biology."
Ready
to make his stake in life, and to decide what career path he would like to
pursue, Joe looks forward to what college life will bring. Already accepted to Stanford
University, "I plan on taking courses in many areas so that I can decide what I
want to do," he said.
"Joe is a 'teacher pleaser' who works very hard always," said Math
teacher, Veronica Thomas. "He doesn't leave anything to chance and he is
always prepared. Joe has always been a mature student and I am sure that he
will be successful both in college and whatever career he chooses."
A
lifelong Dallasite, Joe is the son of Stephen and Jane and the brother of Lilly
and Katie '13. A member of Temple Emanu-El, that congregation's DAFTY (Dallas
Area Federation of Temple Youth), for which he served as Communications Chair,
he has also been involved in the National umbrella youth group and BBYO's Kaplan
chapter.
Committed
to Yavneh's extracurricular programs, Joe has spent four years on the school's
Mock Trial Team, its Students Against Terrorism, Varsity Bulldog Basketball,
and Uniting Students of Dallas. He
also served as Class President in his Junior year.
A globetrotter, Joe spent the spring of
his Junior year studying Theory of Knowlegdge (TOK) English, Biology, Art,
History, Chinese, and Math at Thailand's Prem
Tinsulanonda International School in Chiang
Mai, the "City of Smiles." "Our
family has traveled a lot and to study abroad was a culmination of that," said
Joe, who was joined on the adventure by his twin sister Lilly. "It was really an incredible
experience." While there he participated in the Model United Nations,
basketball, and taught English to children in a local school. There were travels to the Orchid and
Butterfly Garden, Hot Springs, the Tha Pae Gate at the entrance to Chiang Mai,
Northwest Thailand at the Burmese border,
Making points on the
Bulldog courts, with friends from around the world, and those made close here
at Yavneh, Joe is set to score in life.

Yavneh, Class of 2010 ~ Rebecca Lipinsky
|
|
There was a little girl, who has a little curl, right in the middle of her forehead - and running down her back and straight into the hearts of all she is near. Rebecca, that "little" girl, chose Yavneh so as to not cut ties or the bond with friends from her earliest school days at Akiba Academy. "Yavneh allowed me to keep those friends and to meet new people. I've enjoyed Yavneh because there is a place for everyone and people can be friends with whomever they want, without the issue of grade level interferring."
"One of the great things about Yavneh is the dual curriculum
and how it is carried through in the secular subjects," said Rebecca. "When we read a portion of Torah we
analyze it and read the given commentaries for assistance. The same process is followed in English
as, after we read a book, we search out the meaning and implications."
"When Rebecca received the 2009 Bulldog Award (presented
by Head of School Don O'Quinn to the student who most epitomizes the values of
Yavneh Academy), last year my first
reaction was, "Duh!" Maybe not so profound, but this title fits her
like a favorite jean skirt. She's the heart and soul of so much around this
place.," said Sandy Hall-Chiles, Yavneh's Journalism teacher and sponsor of the
Bulldog Newspaper. "On our staff,
she has single-handedly ensured the financial stability of The Bulldog Printon many an
issue by not only handling all our billing and invoices, but also finessing
last minute ad sales to make us solvent. In this economy, that's no small
feat."
"One of
the things I love the most about Yavneh is how the administration is so
accommodating to every student and their needs," said Rebecca who will likely
take that example with her as she studies psychology or education when she
enters American University next fall. "If a class is too big, too small, too
hard, or too easy the administration will find a way to make it better. The
teachers understand the students and know how to apply the right amount of
discipline and enjoyment in class. I feel comfortable enough to go to a teacher
whenever I just want to talk or when I have a problem."
The Dallas native, daughter of Sharon and Jay and
sister of Sarah and Rachel '07, has grown up at Congregation Shaare
Tefilla. She has been a Lady Bulldog Basketball team member and
staffer of Yavneh's Yearbook Crew for four years. Joining both groups as a Sophomore, Rebecca has served as
Business Manager for the Bulldog Print a and Volunteer Coordinator for Students
Against Terrorism, during her Junior and Senior years. Rebecca's
summer memories include working at Akiba's Camp Kulanu and Camp Mazal and as a
member of the Women's Basketball team for the JCC's Maccabi
Games.
"Rebecca has been a model citizen throughout her
time here at Yavneh and her great attitude, always helpful and gracious, makes
her the kind of person who leads by example," said Assistant Principal, Dr. Tim
Cloward. "Whether it is on the
basketball court, at the Bulldog newspaper, or as a camp counselor, she is
always doing something that helps the school or the community."
That
"little" girl, with those "little" curls will forever keep be wrapped around
our hearts. |
|
Yavneh, Class of 2010 ~ Julie Meltzer
|
As a graduate of Levine Academy and looking
for an "all-around good education in secular and Judaic studies," Julie Meltzer
followed brother Michael '09, to the halls of Yavneh. "My favorite part about Yavneh is the college-like
atmosphere. For four years we are
taught to take responsibility for ourselves, to make the best of our time, and
to not be dependent on our parents and teachers in a way that will help us
succeed into our next educational experience," said Julie. "With the freedoms we receive; the
space of the Student Lounge, study halls, and off-campus privileges, we get a
sense of what's to come."
"It has been
said that 'still waters run deep.' I think of this line when I think of
Julie," said English teacher, Phyllis Beilue. "She is a quiet, lovely, retiring young woman who chooses to
observe from a distanced perspective, but her responses are thoughtful and
measured."
"Julie is reflective
and contemplative, but never aloof," said Mrs. Beilue. "Her warmth is one of her
characteristics most readily noticed. Julie will do well in college, and
her personality and stability will always draw others to her."
A longtime Camp Young Judaea camper, Julie is
planning a gap year for '10-'11, likely following the ranks to participate in
the program's YearCourse program.
"I started going to Camp Young Judaea when I was about seven or eight
years old and it's always been a constant in my life," said Julie. "Through its very Zionistic environment
I have come to love Israel so strongly and through its programs, I've learned
even more about Judaism. This
summer I'm looking forward to working at camp this summer and hope I can bring
my campers the adventurous summer I've always had."
"Julie is one of the kindest and most gentle students at Yavneh," said Rabbi Tannenbaum. "Not only have I never
heard her utter a bad word about someone else, I am not sure she is even
capable of doing so."
"Julie sets the
standard for what it means to be a mensch," said Rabbi Tannenbaum. "It is her special personality and
character that make her such an indispensable part of the school."
A Los Angeles native who moved to Dallas when she
was just a baby, Julie is the daughter of Bruce and Hedy and the youngest
sibling to Josh, Marisa, and Michael.
Her brother Trevor, of blessed memory, is forever present and a guiding
spirit for her. A member of
Congregation Shearith Israel, Julie spent last summer coaching at a gymnastics
camp and traveling to Israel on the Young Judaea Machon trip.
A piano player whose fingers dance across the
keyboard, on campus, Julie has been a member of HELP (Helping Everybody Live
Peacefully) and Hashinui for four years and, this year, was a force behind the
founding of Yavneh's Ladies' Soccer team.
Soft and dedicated, always with a smile in her
eyes to cheer, Julie's world, we pray, will always smile back.

Yavneh News & Review
|
|
Always one step ahead in the concept of chesed and
performing mitzvot, Yavneh students found themselves already scheduled to be
"on the road," on January 18, Martin Luther King Day, the President's
proclaimed National Day of Service.
Some students visited Lake Highlands Farms digging
for the next season's potato patch while others sorted donations at a Goodwill
Store or prepared the soil for an outdoor garden at the Roseland Academy.
For Yavneh students and faculty, EVERY DAY is a day
of service!
Lt. Colonel Volkey ~~
Retired Lt. Colonel Colby Volkey, a leading
military attorney, visited Yavneh Academy, sharing his history as lead counsel
for "Omar," a Canadian teenager, held on murder and terrorism charges in
Guantanamo Bay since he was 16-years-old as well as for Staff Sgt. Frank
Woodard, a Marine squad leader, who was charged with 13 counts of murder,
stemming from an incident in Haditha, Iraq.
Lt. Col. Volkey, who served for 21 years including
in Desert Storm, was the chief prosecutor at Camp Pendleton, California, the
busiest trial team in the Department of Defense and Marine Corps defense counsel in the Western half
of the United States and in Iraq.
He received the Meritorious Service Medal by the Secretary of the Navy
and, as a prosecutor or defense attorney, he has tried
hundreds of cases. He is now an
attorney with the Dallas firm of Fitzpatrick Hagood Smith & UHL LLP.
"We are living in amazing times and it's all of you
who are going to decide what this world will become," said Lt. Col.
Volkey. "It's a complex world and
I wish us all the best."
USD Legal Aid Dinner ~~
Yavneh Academy's
Uniting Students of Dallas raised more than $15,000 to benefit the Texas Access to Justice Foundation. The January 25 event, hosted at the
school's Pollman Hall, featured keynote speaker Chief Justice Wallace Jefferson
of the Texas Supreme Court, as well as presentations by State Bar of Texas
President Roland Johnson and Texas Young Lawyers Association President Cori
Harbour. Yavneh's Uniting Students
of Dallas participants were joined by students from Garland High School and H. Grady Spruce High
School, both of whom have been represented at numerous USD events.
The evening was organized by USD's sponsor Chad Baruch and board members Ilan Attar '10, Leigh Bonner '11, Jake Greif '12, Ethan Prescott '10, and Mina Pulitzer '12.
"Upon familiarizing
myself with the Texas Access to Justice Foundation's mission statement, I
recognized that it reverberates with the essence of Judaism and the values that
pervade Yavneh's classrooms," said Leezi Greenberg '10 in welcoming the audience of
more than 200. "This organization is committed to the vision that all Texans
will have equal access to justice, emphasizing the fundamental Judaic belief in
individual worth. A quotation from Pirkei Avot, Ethics of Our Fathers, serves
to illuminate a core component of both the Texas Access to Justice Foundation
and Uniting Students of Dallas. It states, 'Al
tehi vaz l'chol adam v'al tehi maflig l'chol davar sh'ein lecha adam sh'ein lo
sha'ah v'ein lecha davar sh'ein lo makom.' 'Do not condemn any man, and
consider nothing impossible, because there is no man that does not have his
hour, and no thing that does not have its place.' The Texas Access for Justice
Foundation's charitable efforts know neither race nor creed, ensuring that each
individual has his or her 'hour.'"
The Texas Access for
Justice Foundation has raised $250 million to ensure that the poorest Texans
can obtain access to the justice system. In 2008 alone, legal aid programs
funded by the Foundation helped more than 246,000 poor Texans in situations
including domestic violence, landlord-tenant issues, foreclosure defense,
issues involving the elderly, and many other legal matters.
"Although the world as a
whole is currently in a precarious state, in Jewish thought there are three
indestructible pillars that the earth stands on," said Leezi. "The first is Torah, making the Bible a
central part of our lives; the second is avodah,
service to G-d, and the third pillar is gemilut
chasadim, performing acts of kindness. Lying at the crux of the final
pillar is charity. Though at the darkest of times it appears as though these
pillars are going to crumble, it is in the merit of philanthropic organizations
that act as the mortar holding the pillar together. The Talmud declares that,
'Charity is equal to all the other commandments combined.'"
"We hear a lot these days
about access to medical care. You can read the Constitution, the Federalist
Papers, and the ratification debates, and not find any mention of the
importance of health care to a republican," said Ethan Prescott '10, USD's
President. "You will however find
repeated discussions of the idea that you cannot maintain a vibrant democracy
unless all citizens have meaningful access to the courts and that is why we are
here. This event was not about raising money - though we certainly will do did
that. Instead, this event was
about focusing a group of young people on a critical problem, and creating
lifelong activists for the access to justice movement."
"Sacrifice means you give
back and it's a passion for the citizens of our community that has each of us
doing what we do," said Chief Justice Jefferson who was introduced by the
Solicitor General of the State of Texas, Jim Ho. "We have an opportunity to live a life, not only for
ourselves, but for our family, faith, and the world. I know this message isn't lost on the student of Yavneh, as
they give me hope for the future!
To you Mr. O'Quinn and your faculty, I thank you for instilling those
values in the next generation."
"What our constitution
gives each of us is the opportunity, regardless of family history, to overcome
all hurdles and to give back," said the Chief Justice, the great-great-great
grandson of Shedrick Willis, a slave to
a judge in the late 1800s.
"'Access to justice,' is only a term unless we make 'access' available."
"Programs like Uniting Students of Dallas, with
their student empowerment, are the hallmark of Yavneh Academy," said Head of
School, Don O'Quinn. "We are
committed to our community, locally and globally, and, with little guidance,
our students have raised over $350,000 in recent years, all to make a
difference in the lives of many.
Yavneh transcends its reputation and I can't imagine a more appropriate
time, to raise funds for a more worthwhile organization, then today, on this
campus."

| INKLINGS FROM ISRAEL ~~ |

Shayna Dunsky '09 ~~~ at the Elite Chocolate Factory
As a participant on Bnei Akiva's Tafnit Lehava, the first
four months of my experience in Israel was spent living the two pillars of
the Bnei Akiva movment - Torah and Avodah. This translates into study of Torah
and work on the land of Israel. There are 22 of us on my program, 13 Americans
from all over the U.S., three from England, and six from Holland - a very
diverse group!
In September and October, the chanichim
(participants) of Tafnit Lehava worked on the land of Israel, fulfilling Bnei
Akiva's ideal of Avodah, by working on Kibbutz Ein Hanatziv. One of 19
religious kibbutzim in Israel, Kibbutz Ein Hanatziv is located in the Jordan
Valley and near the ancient town of Beit She'an. Ein Hanatziv became our home
and community as we worked on the kibbutz. I worked in the
Kibbutz's plastic factory, Palziv, storing and packing the manufactured items. Work in the morning was followed
by a lunch break, where the entire kibbutz would sit down for lunch together.
For several hours in the afternoon we either rested or
swam in the kibbutz's refreshing natural ma'ayan (spring). The evenings on
the kibbutz included Ulpan classes, a madrichim (counselors) peula
(activity), a chanichim peula, or
a free night.
Shabbat on the Kibbutz provided us with opportunities to
become a part of the kibbutz community as all davening and meals were held with
the members of the entire kibbutz.
In November and December, the boys went to
yeshiva, and the girls went to Midrasha, embracing the next Bnei Akiva ideal of
Torah. Midreshet Migdal Oz, located in Gush Etzion became our home. We studied in depth Chumash, Jewish Philosophy, Tanach
Tiyulim, Tefilah Workshop, Halacha, and much more. It was a great time to
strengthen and build an interminable relationship with Hashem. Additionally, I
had a chance to explore many of the yishuvim and Jewish settlements in the
Gush, as well as venture to Yerushalayim.
During a break in December, we had time to reflect
on the next stage of our Israel journey: January and February chanichim of
Tafnit Lehava can choose to do Maarva, learning about the IDF, or Magen David
Adom, volunteering with Israel's ambulance service. I plan to volunteer with
Magen David Adom in Netanya. I will then spend two months in Lod to volunteer
in this underdeveloped community, followed by a six-week seminar in which we learn to become Madrichim ourselves.
It's been a great adventure thus far and I'm really looking
forward to the rest of my time in Israel!
