| A message from Don O'Quinn ~ Head of School |
To 120 we should live is a prayer heard over and
over - to an additional $120,000 in Yavneh Academy's Annual Fund is a great
possibility as an anonymous donor has offered to match up to $60,000, dollar for dollar, in monies
given to our school.
As we are deep in paperwork, working on the
budget and scheduling of class offerings for the 2010-2011 year, those are
monies that we would love to be able to count on, and monies we would love to
say "Thank You" for, before the end of 2009. Please, while you are writing your tzedakah givings to beat the December 31 postmark, we hope you will
be certain Yavneh is on your list.
Donations can be sent to:
Yavneh Academy of Dallas
12324 Merit Drive
Dallas, TX 75251
As college acceptances are rolling in, from
Stanford and the Business School at the University of Texas, from Indiana,
Kansas, and others from coast to coast, we once again see the respect that
Yavneh's College Prep program provides to our students.
As our mitzvah projects boom from the Uniting Students of Dallas and Helping
Everyone Live Peacefully, to Students Against Terrorism and Hashinui, from BBYO
Regional Board representation to the National Presidency of a project to help
others across the globe, we see the hands-on understanding our children have
learned about tikun olam, repairing
the world.
Yavneh Academy is a place of learning.
Thank you for your support, at this time and
always, for making that learning a possibility.

Faculty Feature ~ Coach Chad Baruch ~ Athletic Director Head Men's Basketball Coach
|
Heading into the back half of the 2009-2010 basketball season, Yavneh Academy's Athletic Director and Men's Basketball Coach Chad Baruch finds it hard to believe he is halfway through his 13th year with the Bulldogs! "Chad has always produced skilled, disciplined basketball teams which play with class," said Yavneh's Head of School, Don O'Quinn. "They are always recognized for this whether they win or lose and, under Chad's guidance, our basketball team has become an admired, nationally-recognized, ambassador of Yavneh Academy." "In addition, Chad cares deeply for the students at Yavneh," said Mr. O' Quinn. "Often serving as counselor to students with problems, he helps students with their college essays, he writes beautiful recommendations that reflect strong knowledge and understanding of his students, and he always looks for ways to use his legal connections to gain extra opportunities for his students." Before coming to Yavneh, Coach Baruch served as Men's Basketball Coach at the University of Dallas, and as an adjunct professor of political science at Brookhaven College. "I am definitely hard on the kids and while others see them as they are, I try to see them as they could be," he said. "I refuse to accept anything less than their best effort and while there are plenty of times they are angry at me, in most cases they seem to understand and appreciate my efforts." At Yavneh, Coach teaches the school's AP Government course and is the sponsor of the school's Uniting Students of Dallas organization which hosts our annual Mix-It-Up day and which will, on January 25, at 7pm, sponsor a dinner to benefit the Texas Access to Justice Foundation. The evening will feature keynote speaker Chief Justice Wallace Jefferson of the Texas Supreme Court along with presentations by State Bar of Texas President Roland Johnson and Texas Young Lawyers Association President Cori Harbour. This year, Coach Baruch has arranged for several speakers to visit with Yavneh students, including famed civil rights attorney Morris Dees, Justice Phil Johnson of the Texas Supreme Court, Mark Halperin (Political Director of ABC News), Sarah Weddington (who litigated and won Roe v. Wade in the Supreme Court), and Mark Curriden (attorney, journalist, and author of "Contempt of Court; The Turn-of-the-Century Lynching That Launched a Hundred Years of Federalism"). On January 5, at 3:15pm in the Beit Midrash, the community is invited to share in Yavneh's Government education, to hear Lt. Colonel Colby Vokey, 2007's American Bar Association choice for the nation's Criminal Defense Lawyer of the Year. A highly-decorated combat veteran of the Marine Corps, Lt. Col. Vokey was involved in some of the most publicized criminal trials in American history, including serving as defense counsel at Guantanamo Bay, and defending the Marine squad leader accused of murdering 18 people in Haditha, Iraq. "The growth and impact of Uniting Students of Dallas has been great for Yavneh - to bring together students of such diverse backgrounds and have them enjoy a day together, hearing and talking about what makes them the same, rather than what makes them different," said Baruch. "For our Head of School and Board of Directors to support our programs speaks volumes of Yavneh's mission and role in the community." Coach is also a sponsor of Students Against Terrorism's Points for Peace Basketball Tournament which opens registration for its 2010 tournament, to be held on March 7, later this month. In addition to his roles at Yavneh, Coach, who is originally from Wisconsin, and who received a B.A. in political science from the University of Minnesota and his J.D. from that university's law school, continues his career as an attorney with most of his work in constitutional appeals. Coach Baruch maintains a leadership role in the profession as a member of the State Bar of Texas Board of Directors, the State Bar College Board of Directors, a member of the District 6A Grievance Panel, and as Course Director of the State Bar's Bill of Rights Course. A frequent speaker, Coach received the State Bar's 2008 Standing Ovation Award for superior contributions to continuing legal education in Texas, and was named Outstanding Presenter at last year's Advanced Appellate Law Course. In addition, he served as a contributor for the most recent edition of Black's Law Dictionary. Coach, the father of UT-San Antonio freshman, Kennedy, appreciates the education that comes from within the Orthodox community. Raised in a home that followed the Reform branch of Judaism, he believes that Yavneh's students are very fortunate. "Students educated by the Orthodox can always choose their own observance level but without that education, it would be difficult to choose to live an Orthodox lifestyle. To me, Yavneh is largely about providing students the education that will permit them to make informed decisions about how to embrace and practice Judaism."

Yavneh, Class of 2010 ~ Joshua Karnett
|
"Josh is intelligent and diligent. He is always ready to assist, he asks good questions, and above all, he always completes his assignments," said Yavneh science faculty member and Josh's AP Chemistry teacher, Lourdes Linzey. "Once he had some problems with his experiment, which had failed, but he stayed with the task until he solved his problem. I think that Josh could easily become a scientist, who makes important discoveries that will help mankind." After having attended the Eleanor Kolitz Academy in San Antonio from preschool through middle school, and then the Ann and Nate Levine Academy, Josh wanted to continue his Jewish education. "I enjoy attending Yavneh because it has taught me that I can accomplish anything I set my mind to," he said. "Yavneh's students are successful because they work hard to obtain as much knowledge as possible and faculty can't be beat. They are kind, respectful, and do their best to stress the importance of having a broad education." Relationships with his classmates and the underclassmen will follow Josh long after he accepts the title of Yavneh alum. "The relationship I have with my friends at school is incredible," he said. "One minute I can be talking to one of my fellow senior friends, and the next I can be showing one of my new freshmen buddies around campus." Born in Boston, the son of Martin and Laura and brother to Adam, Josh enjoys attending Congregation Shearith Israel services and programming with his family. He has worked at the JCC as a scorekeeper, he is a member of BBYO's Kaplan chapter, and he has served on the board of Young Judaea. "Being on the YJ board means giving back to the camp that gave so much to me," said Josh who was a Camp Young Judaea camper from the age of eight until going to YJ's Camp Tel Yehudah in New York and then participating on their Machon program last summer. "Jewish camping is incredible and, for me, it meant meeting Jewish kids from around the United States, and, on Machon, from around the world, with opportunities to learn more about myself and my religion." At Yavneh, Josh is a four-year driving force for the Yavneh basketball team. "For a school with no football," he said, "We make up for our drive and spirit with our oh-so-very passionate basketball fans. Our coaches and our fans give us the power and will to succeed!" Josh has also been a participant on the school's Mock Trial Team, he has worked with Students Against Terrorism, volunteered for the Points for Peace basketball tournament for three years, played keyboard with the Music Ensemble, and this year, he joined the staff of the Bulldog Print as Opinion Editor. Always involved in sports, having played baseball, soccer, and basketball in the community before joining Yavneh's Bulldogs, Josh would like to parlay his love of the games into a career as a sports broadcaster. "Bob Costas has always been a hero to me," said Josh. "I appreciate how he can tie life's attributes into every event he covers, and he's able to give a perspective on a game or athlete that isn't 'just' about the sport, but he makes it relevant to the viewers, many of whom might never have played whatever he's covering. He's really incredible." Already accepted to Indiana University, the University of Georgia, and the University of Kansas, it's certain that Josh's goal of sitting behind the microphone, sharing the scores, facts, and figures, will be one he'll reach.

Yavneh, Class of 2010 ~ Dylan Kaye
|
A Dallas native, Dylan is the oldest son of Jeff and Tracy Kaye, and the brother of Spencer and Skylar, all members of Temple Emanu-El of Dallas.
A graduate of the Ann and Nate Levine Academy, Dylan has spent time helping the students associated with Bea's Kids, a program that provides assistant with homework and other skills, for Kindergarten through 12th grade students. He has also volunteered with Jewish Family Service's Food Pantry and worked as a camp counselor, primarily participating in sports programs as basketball is his sport. "It's cool that so many of my friends from Levine go to Yavneh and we are very close," said Dylan. "Even with the kids who didn't go to Levine, it didn't take long before we were 'a class,' not separate kids, and it's like that from all the grades. Everyone gets along with and hangs with everyone else." "From our first meeting, fast forward just a year, Dylan matured so much and I could see how quickly he was becoming a young man, no longer a boy," said Spanish, English, and Social Studies teacher Gloria Boyd, who first met Dylan when he was in World History his sophomore year. "Dylan has a real gift for Spanish and he's always been enthusiastic to learn harder and harder material, so I gave him advanced verb constructions from Spanish II and Spanish III to learn," said Ms. Boyd, who awarded Dylan Yavneh's 2008-2009 Spanish award for the "sheer monumental" leaps that he made by learning material from Spanish I, II, and III all in the same year. "I have taught Spanish since 1974 and I had never seen a student master Spanish III complexities at the same time as he was learning Spanish I." Applying to schools that will help him move toward a career in finance and investments, Dylan has to date been accepted to the University of Kansas. Summer is for family and as such, Dylan has spent that time working with his father's recruiting firm, KBIC, and traveling the globe visiting among many locales, including Bangkok, England, France, Italy, Korea, Russia, Sweden, and Thailand. With his classmates at Levine, he traveled to Israel, adding another stamp to his very full and colorful passport. Colorful is Dylan's passport, and also his spirit, as he readies to spread that color beyond Dallas's borders.

Yavneh, Class of 2010 ~ Hannah Kessler
|
"I appreciate that Yavneh's administration takes the students seriously," said Hannah, who helped kick-off Yavneh's first women's soccer season. "The smallness of the school I think helps in everyone knowing everyone, and the staff knowing us well enough to believe in us. We can make things happen and it's great that Mr. O'Quinn and everyone really supports us." "That we got the soccer teams off the ground was a great surprise, I know students have wanted to in the past," said Hannah who has played soccer for six years. "We had players who didn't know anything about the sport participating and they ended up really liking it. I hope it will last for years to come." For Hannah, who had spent all but a couple of years in Jewish day school when her family made the move from her native Maine to Dallas, it was Yavneh that met the incoming junior's needs. "I spent some time in public school but missed the connection and the feeling of a Jewish day school," she said. "It makes school a bigger part of me than 'just' the learning, it brings who I am, and my identity, into bigger play. I felt that when I go away to school, I'll be a stronger Jew for having learned and explored my Judaism, both personally and socially, as well as through the education I've received." "We are very fortunate that Hannah Kessler chose to join us here at Yavneh and our campus has been a brighter place for it," said Assistant Principal, Tim Cloward. "Hannah is hardworking, conscientious, and gracious-a model citizen-and she has a beautiful smile that lights up the room." Hannah, who is interested in government and politics, perhaps a career as an attorney, and who has applied to a number of smaller, liberal arts schools around the country, has thus far been accepted to St. Edward's University in Austin. Excited about going on the March of the Living Tour in April, Hannah looks forward to seeing firsthand the sites that she's learned of for much of her life. "We had some very distant relatives who were victims of the Holocaust and to be where they were, and to see the reality of what I've heard about for so long, will be something," said Hannah. "Then, to get to be in Israel, something I've wanted to do for so long, will be wonderful." The daughter of Mark and Stephanie and youngest sister of Bob and Jenny, with her family, Hannah attends services at Congregation Beth Torah. In addition to participating on Yavneh's soccer team, Hannah plays for a community soccer league in The Colony, and she is involved with Yavneh's Hashinui Environmental Club. "Hashinui means 'the change,' and this program is all about kids wanting to help change the culture, and to educate and interest people in cleaning up the world and making ours an environmentally sound community. I care about the environment and I'm glad Yavneh has students who care, an administration who cares, and a program that I think makes a difference." And many a difference in the world you will make, Hannah. That you started here is our blessing.

Yavneh, Class of 2010 ~ Matthew Kirby
|
"I decided to attend Yavneh because I was never very in tune with my Jewish heritage and I wanted to know more," said Matt who believes the last two-and-a-half years (he came to Yavneh from Carrollton's R.L. Turner High School as a sophomore) have brought him more in tune with his Jewishness. Says Matt, "I'm convinced now I'd like to live a Conservative Jewish lifestyle. Once I started learning I knew more about me, I felt more connected and I want that to continue." A mainstay of Yavneh's theater department, Matt played the lead character, Hershel of Ostrpol, in last year's production of Hershel and the Hanukkah Goblins. He was featured as Hans van Daan in The Diary of Anne Frank and will play the part of Meyer the Shammes in Yavneh's spring production of "A Dybbuk." "I am very much looking forward to Matt's portrayal," said Yavneh's theatre program director, Isabella Ides. "Matt has demonstrated incredible promise and if he delivers what I think he is capable of, this will prove a memorable performance." "To see Matt in his 'natural habitat' is to watch him on the stage," said Rabbi Maury Grebenau, who teaches both math and Judaic Studies at Yavneh. "Drawn toward technical classes, he clearly has an aptitude for them," said Rabbi Grebenau who teaches Matt's AP Calculus AB class. "He grasps the concepts quickly." Matt who has been accepted to the University of Kansas, with plans to first go to Israel for a year on the Ohr Sameyach program Chai Israel, will pursue studies as a mechanical engineer in order to become an inventor and entrepreneur. "I've just always felt drawn to inventing and creating." The son of Heidi and Michael, and big brother to Daniel, Matt was born in Spring, Texas. A member of Temple Shalom, Matt is very involved in BBYO's Monsky chapter, for whom he served as Moreh, educating new members about BBYO history and traditions and he led the planning of the chapter's spring retreat. In addition to his very committed involvement with Yavneh's theatre program, he is a member of Yavneh's Frisbee and Spirit clubs. "I have had great fun with Matt since he came to Yavneh. He is funny and creative, and he brings a unique perspective to life," said Assistant Principal, Dr. Tim Cloward. "He's been a mainstay and key player in the Yavneh drama department and we're appreciative of his contributions in past shows, and look forward to seeing him in his farewell performance this spring." "I think that one area in which Matt stands out when one looks at how he spends his time is certainly that of community," said Rabbi Grebenau. "As a rabbi, I can certainly appreciate the tremendous efforts that go into being seriously involved in a youth organization (BBYO), into his helping young children (he has designed a website and logo for a Dallas-area inner-city youth basketball team), and in helping his classmates. He has taken on numerous leadership roles and is known to be someone who is always willing to get involved. His commitment to communal work is laudable and an important life skill." Leadership and light-hearted cheer, qualities that will take Matt to the stage, to the heart of his community, to a future filled with success.

Chanukah Hagigah ~~ Seven candles burning, students, teachers, and family members dancing, and latke oil popping, Yavneh celebrated Chanukah and the end of Fall semester finals.

Davening and dreidels and a video visit from Rabbi Grebenau's alter ego set the stage for a well needed break for all!

Yeshiva University's Legacy Heritage Teacher Training Fellow at Yavneh; Raffi Rosenzweig ~~
Yeshiva University's
Dr. Scott Goldberg and Joey
Small flew in from New York for a recent get together, to welcome Ilana and
Raffi Rosenzweig to the area and to educate members of the community about the Legacy
Heritage Teacher Training Fellowship that has brought them here. In attendance were evening hosts Doris
and Dr. Mordecai Klein, Pam and Jeff Fine, Rabbi Maury Grebenau, Carol and Mark
Kreditor, Don O'Quinn, Rabbi Ari Perl, David Radunsky, Terri and Richard Rohan,
Naomi Schrager, Rabbi Zev Silver, Rabbi Meir Tannenbaum, Ora and Morti
Tenenhaus, and Mike Zucker.
"The role Yeshiva University has played for the last 35 years has been defined
by a paradigm created from the recognition that we have a responsibility not
only to reside on campuses around the country, but also within the communities,
to support the youth, professionals, and families," said Dr. Scott Goldberg,
Director of the Institute for University-School Partnership of the Azrieli
Graduate School of Jewish Education and Administration, of Yeshiva University,
during a recent visit to Dallas.
"This is a model for schools of education around the country."
The two-year Legacy Heritage Teacher Training Fellowship
provides an opportunity for college graduates to teach both formally and
informally at Jewish day schools across North America. In three summers,
participating fellows complete the necessary coursework to receive an M.S.
degree from the Azrieli Graduate School.
During the year, conferences, close mentoring, and thought provoking
webinars are all essential elements of their professional development. Exposure to the best practices and
lifetime wisdom of seasoned Jewish educators inform the substance and judgments
fellows will make throughout their careers.
"As we are still close to the holiday of
Chanukah, we can speak of bringing fire to the table to light the fire of a
child, of a student, of a community," said Joey Small, Fellowship Coordinator. "For our communities, we look for
teachers with that fire and passion to share with the students. At Yavneh, Raffi has amazing mentors in
Naomi Schrager and Rabbi Meir Tannenbaum, and an incredible example of
leadership in Mr. Don O'Quinn."
"Yavneh Academy has been built on the expertise
of teachers with 30 to 50 years in the field and that kind of faculty needs the
stimulus of the youth in the profession," said Mr. O'Quinn. "We've always wanted to partner with
Yeshiva University, an organization so committed to the teaching profession, and
in just a few months with Raffi in our stead, he has brought in new blood. I hope that through his teaching at
Yavneh, he finds great reward."
A 2007 Yeshiva University graduate, Raffi worked
professionally and as a Presidential Fellow in communications for two years
before deciding to pursue a career in Jewish education. Teaching Jewish History and Chumash at
both Yavneh and Akiba academies, Raffi expects the Legacy Heritage Teacher
Training Fellowship to help him handle the transition to classroom teaching.
"Yavneh exudes creativity and I want to use that
to make my teaching as relevant as possible to my students, to speak to the
kids and to know what they connect to," said Raffi. "I want my students awakened by what they are learning."
"When a teacher connects with his students, there's
a synergy that can't be replaced," said Akiba Academy's Rabbi Zev Silver. "He loves the kids and it's clear, the
students love him."
"This is a partnership that has been forged
over time and the teachers, students, and families of the schools deserve this,"
said Dr. Goldberg.
Uniting Students of Dallas welcomes Akko's Tri-Wizard Students ~~
Yavneh's Uniting Students of Dallas organization hosted the first Dallas stop for participants of the UJA and Jewish Federation Central Region consortium sponsored Tri-Wizard Program that connects Israeli Jewish high school students and Israeli Arab high school students from Akko with high school students in the United States.
The December 10-13 visit to Dallas, was a sidebar as the students headed to Canton, Ohio for the culmination of the program where the Israeli students connected with American students with whom they've been in touch through the three-year process. The program provides an opportunity for students and advisors to work toward coexistence, focusing on tolerance of each other's cultures, clearing stereotypes, and gaining understanding and appreciation for each other. Yavneh's USD students who shared a lunchtime discussion with the visitors were Ilan Attar '10, Leigh Bonner '11, Jori Epstein '12, Jacob Greif '12, Joshua Karnett '10, Joseph Lerer '10, Ethan Prescott '10, Mina Pulitzer '12. "It was a perfect opportunity for USD because the Tri-Wizard program unites kids that are torn apart because of political conflict," said USD's Mina Pulitzer, '12. "The program shows that we don't need to carry out the hatred, and that we can make a change. It was inspiring and moving to listen to the thoughts, of students on both sides because to truly try and understand is a difficult thing to do, and these students all respected each other." "We've seen that if you give the youth the equipment to contain diversity of the State of Israel, they recognize their differences but they are able to be friends, to socialize, and to make magic," said Israeli chaperone and program coordinator, Yaffit Cohen. "We connected one Jew, an Arab, and an American - they shared biographies and personal letters, and the result is beautiful, really something very special."
The Dallas visit was overseen by Deborah Fisher of the Jewish Federation of Greater Dallas and Federation Vice Chair, Harold Gernsbacher. They were hosted at the homes of NTO/BBYO families. "The tensions and issues in Israel aren't created by the children," said Mr. Gernsbacher. "They are of the situation around them. Hate comes from ignorance, it's a choice. You can choose to hate or you can choose to love." "I tell my story through this program and I hear the stories of the other students and I hear their feelings, who they are as people," said Samira Ragimov. "The Arab students aren't so different from us and without this program, I wouldn't ever know them or what they are about. I've learned so much."
"I've watched this program unfold with tears in my eyes as these students come together each week. We want to provide bridges of understanding," said Ghadir Shafie, who coordinates on behalf of the Arab students. "We've seen that we share a vision of living, of hopes, of fears. We don't represent our situation in Israel, we represent the hope for the future." "I think what struck me the most after meeting the kids from Akko is that teenagers, when given the chance to make their own decisions and judgment of others, are capable of ignoring all the politics that pollute their daily lives," said USD's, Leigh Bonner '11. "It is really amazing to see Arabs and Jews together in one room, just laughing, eating pizza, talking about sports. It is always the kids that look to adults for guidance, but maybe the Arabs and Jews should look at that Yavneh conference room and try to emulate the progress of the younger generation."

Yavneh's Snack Bar ~~ Yavneh's coffee and snack bar has resumed service in the Schultz Rosenberg Main Lobby. Among those making the java jam, are Simon Coretz '13 and Kayley Romick '13, a most faithful customer

Jared Katz '11 ~~ was elected 2010 Regional Aleph Shaliach of NTO/BBYO. The Berger chapter member is now resposible for making sure that the chapters and the region as a whole are keeping Judaism a part of their programming and that BBYO and its members remain active in helping the community.
"Coming from a Jewish day school education at both Levine Academy and now at Yavneh, where I am committed and required to serving more than 100 community service hours, it's meaningful to me that I can help the rest of the region achieve these goals," said Jared. Kol Hakavod!
Yavneh's Music Makers ~~ The Intown Chabad's December 12 Chanukah party was jammin' thanks to the musical merriment of members of Yavneh's Music Ensemble. Eitan Barak '11, Micah Steinbrecher '10, Mark Cheirif '10, and Leora Mitzner '11 helped light up the menorah, and the night!
Yavneh Yachad Volunteers ~ Kol Hakavod to Yavneh's Yachad volunteers Benji Liener '12, Sarah Weiss '11, Yaakov Stolovitsky '12, Adina Mandelcorn '12, Sara Jane Goldenberg '11, Zev Klein '12, and (not shown) Justine Berman '12, Mark Cheirif '10, Sam Coretz '13, Abbie Denemark '11, Evie Denemark '12, Sophie Geller '10, Rachel Rudberg '12, and Jasmine Sidisin '12, who, throughout the year, help make holidays - and every days - special for members of Dallas' Jewish community living with special needs. In December, the students shared in the Chanukah joy through arts & crafts, snacks and celebration fun. Through Yachad, members learn about their Jewish heritage and participate in the mainstream of Jewish life.
By inviting typically functioning children and adults to act as "buddies" to Yachad members, Dallas Yachad also raises awareness and provides sensitivity training within the community. In addition, the mainstreamed program design significantly influences the next generation's attitude towards the handicapped, inspiring many to continue helping the developmentally disabled and others with special needs. To volunteer, or participate, in Yachad programming, email Rabbi Jay Weinstein at jw15@aol.com
