A message from Don O'Quinn ~ Head of School

This year is off to a wonderful start with a great freshman class that has had a better beginning than any other. This is due in part to the supervised study periods for ninth and tenth grades and to the increased monitoring of student performance by Erin Ray, whose story you will read below in our monthly Faculty Feature. Shortly, we will use the study periods to teach organizational skills to all of the freshmen and sophomores.

Ninth, Tenth, and Eleventh graders have had their first training in research on the new electronic databases which were installed this summer and our library program is being developed by Polly Gilbert, retired head of the St. Marks' library.

Senior transcripts have been finalized, and we will be mailing our first college applications on Monday.  To date we have had 15 college reps on campus with many more scheduled and we look forward to learning of the roads our senior students will soon travel.

The revamped English department is functioning well, and students are experiencing new approaches to the learning of literature and writing.

We are in the process of initiating the annual campaign.  The effort is two-fold: (a) to raise $400,000 for the operating budget---most of which will go to scholarships and the installation of new computer systems, and (b) to increase our endowments with a target of  $20,000,000.  We are inviting potential donors to tour the campus and to meet our students as we explain Yavneh's program of instruction.

As you will see in the News in Review section below, our annual "Start of the Year" Shabbaton was a great success.  It was good to see our great diversity of students enjoying the celebration of Shabbat and enjoying being with each other.  The most defining characteristic of this year is the wonderful spirit that our new student body has brought into the school.

We are celebrating the holidays with unique learning experiences, field trips, community service projects, and ritual.

As we go forward with a busy and challenging year, we send our thanks for sharing your wonderful children and we wish you the very best during the holiday celebrations.

Faculty Feature ~
Erin Ray - Guidance Counselor
A San Diego native, Erin is the daughter of Albert and Cheryl Ray, and the sister of Heather and Samantha.  Recently engaged to Columbian native Rafi Amsili,  she worked with at Soille San Diego Hebrew Day School where, before coming to Yavneh, she taught kindergarten, second, and fourth grades, Erin looks forward to getting married in the next year.

When not in school or working, Erin's greatest love is to see her passport fill.  A traveler since she was young, her first family trip was to Israel, Egypt, and Belgium when she was just eight, and she now has been to forty countries, including four trips to Israel.

With an undergraduate degree in communications from UCLA and her recently completed M.S. in counseling from Southern Methodist University, it was her own high school counselor, Alison Fleming, who shared with her the fascination of mentoring students.

"Jewish day schools offer a sense of community, culture, and an environment of holiday celebrations and year-round observance and activities," said Erin.  "I love being a part of that and Yavneh celebrates and educates in every aspect of its program.  I love having my traditions be a part of my work."

As for working in a private school setting? "I believe at Yavneh, like many private schools, teachers are able to teach, and counselors are able to counsel.  There's less to go through, and more that really happens for the sake of the students and that's why we're here."

"Yavneh has provided the perfect backdrop for Erin to complete her studies and she is ready to take on the challenges and rewards of being a guidance counselor," said Allyn Schmucker, Yavneh's College Guidance Counselor.  "She enjoys the relationship that she has with each of the students and hopes that she will have a positive impact on their high school successes."

"I have enjoyed seeing Erin blossom into a confident, caring counselor ready to tackle the complexities of the job," said Mrs. Schmucker.

Working with Mrs. Schmucker, Erin has learned how to run a counseling program and how to work with students and parents on every step of the college application planning.

"I love working with Mrs. Schmucker because every time we work together she makes me better and teaches me something new.  She's the most excited and cheeriest person I've ever known and she's really allowed me to be there, right by her side.  From the beginning she's taught me that 'nothing is simple,' and that 'college is a match, not a prize.'  I know the lessons she's taught me will help me, and all the students I have the fortune to work with."

In addition to assisting in Yavneh's College Guidance office, Erin provides academic, career, and personal guidance counseling to our freshman and sophomore students.  "In addition to our 'open door' policy, I've been pulling kids in to meet with me so that I can get to know them and so they'll feel comfortable in coming in, no matter what the situation," she said.

"I believe that Yavneh helps our students to hone their Jewish values, providing lifelong lessons, helping deepen the roots that will make them amazing people. We have great kids and I'm so thrilled to be a part of this family."
Yavneh, Class of 2010 ~
Arielle Burstein
Born in Corpus Christi, the daughter of Brenda Time and Michael Burstein, and sister of Raphe and Zev, Arielle lived in Israel as a youngster.  After moving to the states and attending Akiba, Levine, and Wise academies, Arielle knew she wanted to continue her Jewish education.  "Leaving the city was out of the picture and when I visited Yavneh, the family-like atmosphere and students' amicability stood out."

"I love Yavneh because it allows students to be whomever they want to be.  At other schools, some students slave for years, trying to be recognized or trying to earn a high title.  At Yavneh, every student can shine if she wants to."

"We definitely have the best faculty, hands down," said Arielle.  "Our faculty love education and they world year-round to enlighten their students.  Teachers at Yavneh are also our neighbors, friends, employers, and family members and it's never uncomfortable when we see them our of school."

"Through Arielle, I learned that one can be a successful mathematician as well as an accomplished actress," said Math teacher, Veronica Thomas.  "She is one of the most helpful students I have met; always organizing study sessions at her house and trying to help others.  It appears that her day has more than 24 hours."

"Arielle is a teacher's dream," said Rabbi Meir Tannenbaum.  "She arrives to every class on time (if not early) and comes prepared to learn.  Her incredible talents and diverse interests make her an invaluable member of any classroom discussion."

"My favorite thing about Yavneh is that you can be whoever you want to be.  At Yavneh, if you want to join a club and be an officer, you can.  If you want the lead in the play, you can have it.  It's not like everything comes on a silver platter, we do have to work for it, but it's easier to grow here than it would be at a bigger school."

Arielle has certainly taken advantage of programs at Yavneh.  She is president of the Yavneh Theatre Club and captain of the mock trial team, and she served for three years on the Bulldog Print as managing editor, photography editor, and reporter.  Outside of school, Arielle is executive president of The Audiemur Project, a group that provides computers and money to help the citizens of Cameroon become computer-literate.

Looking at universities in New York City, Boston, and the Los Angeles area, Arielle wants to study creative writing.  Having participated in summer programs for screenwriting at Duke University and sketch comedy writing at Brown University, it is her hope to someday write TV shows, movie scripts, books, and short stories. Arielle expects to someday attend law school, a love founded through participating on Yavneh's mock trial team and a Criminal Trial Advocacy class at Duke.

Pen in hand, or keyboard at the ready, Arielle's flair is certain to educate, entertain, and inform us all.
Yavneh, Class of 2010 ~
Elizabeth Chatham
"Yavneh matches my desire to stay in touch with my Jewish roots. At only 14 years old, living in Dallas, I needed that direction if I truly wanted to identify myself as a Jew," said Lizzie.  "Since making that decision I can honestly say that I can't visualize myself being this satisfied in my high school career anywhere else."

"Yavneh is Mr. O. I've never come across a finer headmaster, let alone a finer faculty member of any sort, than Mr. O'Quinn. If I am experiencing any issue in school he is sure to address it promptly and if someone decides the school could use another elective or sports team of any kind, Mr. O'Quinn's response is, 'Ok, start a petition, have at least 10 people sign it, and I'll hire a teacher or coach.' This is Yavneh."

"The students who graduate from Yavneh come out well rounded and successful. Students who begin their days practicing ways of spiritual and religious growth are later motivated to grow in all facets, including secular ones," said Lizzie.  "Much of that motivation also comes from our faculty's eagerness in producing the best students possible."

"Lizzie has a lot of wonderful qualities, the first of which is that she was a pleasure to teach," said Rabbi Uri Grosberg, a former Judaic Studies teacher.  "Everyday, I could always be assured to see a smile on her face.   Lizzie also has a combination of sincerity and a thirst for knowledge, always looking for the next opportunity to discuss our next unit."

"I saw Lizzie mature in her Torah studies at Yavneh," said Rabbi Grosberg.  "In all, Lizzie acted as a 'mentch!'  I know her future will lead her to much success, as she continues on her journey as a Torah Jew!"

With a permanent travel bug, Lizzie plans to spend a year, with her camera, traveling after graduation, with at least a semester spent in Israel.  Upon her return to the U.S. Lizzie hopes to study either forensic psychology or something that will incorporate her love for visual arts and international business.

Lizzie, a Dallas native who graduated from Levine Academy, is the daughter of Rebecca and step-daughter of Alex. Lizzie was involved in BBYO and she enjoys classes and traveling with NCSY.  Lizzie has spent summers traveling on a Sephardic Heritage tour through Turkey, on a four-week Israel tour with NCSY, and to New York City.

A Co-President of H.E.L.P (Helping Everyone Live Peacefully), Lizzie is also involved in Yavneh's environmental group Hashinui, she is a Yavneh Student Ambassador, she's served on the Bulldog Print staff, and been involved in the Theatre Club. A member of Yavneh's soccer team, she also played tennis and softball for the Bulldogs.

Memories of Lizzie captured on digital, film, or otherwise, will always be highlighted by a smile and sparkle in her eye.
Yavneh, Class of 2010 ~
Mark Cheirif
Mark, the son of Heidy and Dr. Jorge Cheirif, followed the family path to Yavneh, third in line to alumni Benji '02 and Michelle '04, both of whom are marrying this fall.  "I love Yavneh because of the freedom and the open Jewish environment," he said.

"Mark has a well-developed sense of humor which brings a smile to the faces of his classmates," said Judaic Studies instructor, Rabbi Maury Grebenau. "Under his humorous façade Mark is really a serious student who is thirsty for knowledge particularly about Judaism and adds a great deal to any classroom. I have no doubt that Mark will continue to grow as a person and a Jew and will be a vital part of his Jewish community."

"Mark is always one of the most participatory students in any class. He always has insight to add to our discussions - whether he is offering opinions from his Sefardi background, or being creative with the Hebrew alphabet, he always has something to contribute," said Judaic Studies Programming Director and teacher, Naomi Schrager.  "We have all come to expect a witty comment or funny anecdote from Mark, and he rarely disappoints. Lesser known to most people, is Mark's genuine desire to help out. He has also matured a great deal since I first taught him three years ago. His personality and essence have not changed, but he now approached humor with more sophistication."

Following graduation, Mark plans to study in Israel, a place he's visited five or six times, and a place that holds his heart.  "I've been there to travel, to celebrate my bar mitzvah, to work in soup kitchens, and now I hope to be able to study there for an extensive amount of time," said Mark.  He hopes first to go for a year to a yeshiva and then to remain for his university studies, hopefully at Hebrew University, with a focus on architecture, web design, or psychology.

Outside of school, Mark enjoys spending time with his school friends. he has joined some of them in starting a band, "Deaf and Famous," that mixes hard rock and pop with a touch of Latin and Middle Eastern style.  He spent this summer as a counselor at Camp Chai and as a participant on NCSY's Eurotrip, visiting Spain, Italy, Gibraltar, and Israel.

A Houston native, Mark is co-president of NCSY.  At Yavneh's he's been involved with the Music Ensemble, and also serves as Student Council Vice President of Public Relations. Mark is on the Yearbook Crew, and he's played for the soccer and junior varsity basketball teams.

Spiking the ball, serving the hungry, building homes or offices, Mark's bound to make his way, always setting us up for a laugh.

Yavneh, Class of 2010 ~
Devora Cohen
Devora is a native of Tel Aviv, Israel, but moved to Dallas in 2008 with her parents Kineret and Shai, and siblings, Tamar '13, Hadas, Elior, Jay, and Eliyahu. A visit to Yavneh and word of its reputation brought Devora to our halls.

"I heard great things about the school and I've found them to be true. I enjoy Yanveh because I feel like everyone is one big family with students and faculty who are friendly, nice, caring and supportive."

"I expected Dallas to be a big desert but I was very wrong," said Devora.  "Israel will always be my home but thanks to the way people have been welcoming, this feels a lot like home."

"Yavneh 'gets it all in' in the way that the teachers always have planned activities for us to learn about Judaic studies and they teach it in a fun and easy way to understand," said Devora who appreciates the hands-on approach.  "In Jewish Thought & Law, when we studied about kosher foods we took a trip to the zoo and took pictures of the  animals and compared kosher and non-kosher animals."

According to Mrs. Beilue, "Just as Devora Cohen was settling into her junior English class as a student whose first language is Hebrew, she had to make another adjustment to a new teacher who doubled assignments.  Through it all, Devora could not have been more gracious or more conscientious.  She spent many hours writing each essay assignment, first in Hebrew and then more hours translating her work into English with the aid of a dictionary.  Her time on task was easily four times that of her classmates.  Not only did she manage this herculean task, but she did it with admirable skill.  I am so proud of her."

Mixing her summers with frolic and education, Devora took a 2008 trip to Austria with friends and in 2009 she worked for her father, studied geometry, and prepared for the SAT. Professionally, Devora plans to follow in Dad's footsteps, working in the jewelry design and fashion industry.

A former participant and counselor in Israel's Bnai Akiva and Kav L'Chaim programs, Devora also attended Camp Moshava, known to a number of Yavneh students, before moving to Dallas. "It was the same camp, different sessions, but a coincidence," said Devora.  "I loved it!"

Devora is co-President of Yavneh's Ruach/Spirit club, a Senior Class Representative in Student Council, and a member of the Chess Club, the Lady Bulldogs Soccer Team, and Hashinui.  "I love the clubs here, there's something for everyone and there are clubs that mean something.  Hashinui, the environmental club, is something we think so much about - this is our world and we better be taking care of it."

With Devora's sites set on recycling her spirit, our world, and the gems she hopes to design, we can be sure her future will sparkle.

springkidsFALL SHABBATON ~~ "This year's campus Shabbaton was our best yet," reports Judaic Studies Programming Director, Naomi Schrager.  "I hope the rest of our student body will realize what they missed and come next time!"

There was more student involvement and help than in
past years and it really showed in the program. Anyone who drove up the campus on Friday was greeted by Shabaton decorations put up by our Ruach committee, many "thanks" to a great team led by Alex Burk, Devorah Cohen, and Jackie Peiser, and the food, which was enjoyed by all, was a collaborative effort of our students and faculty.

There was lots of singing at each meal, a debut duet performance from Reid Cohen and Ben Romaner, and great learning on Shabbat afternoon led by our seniors. Our students served, cleaned up at each meal, and this shabbaton was thrill to be a part of.

springkidsSEPTEMBER 11 TRIBUTE ~

Yavneh's Student Council brought the memory of September 11, 2001 to the forefront with moments of silence, a food drive collection of goods which were donated to the fire department across the street from the Schultz Rosenberg Campus, a slide show and the words of an anonymous child, written from the memory of that moment of life:

springkids  "For eight years now, life has continued. Slowly at first, a little quicker later on, and now our normal has incorporated our loss. The human spirit that propels us each day was not extinguished on September 11th. As a matter of fact, it grew in strength. A national strength that Americans came to realize they possessed in the face of attack. Two buildings were destroyed. Three planes full of people crashed. Secretaries, janitors, bosses, and workers were killed."

springkids"Families were destroyed. But we're here today to remember and once again resolve to keep the spirit that was not extinguished alive. We work, we study, we play, we pray, and we go on because we were not defeated. The evil that brought down the world trade center towers didn't expect our nation to stand strong. Today we stand stronger because of our tragedy, and must work towards a future free of such evil. We look back, we remember, and we now look forward. Our invincible spirit leads us into the future. Stronger than ever."

"Yavneh's Ambassadors tour prospective students and their families around campus, answer questions, and share the history of our program and provide a students' eye view of what a day in the life of a Yavneh student might be," said Don O'Quinn, Yavneh's Head of School.  "We're very proud of the students chosen this year to represent our Yavneh community.  The feedback is strong and positive and, as are many of our students, these are the leaders of our future."

Yeshivat Lev HaTorah

Yeshivat Lev HaTorah is located in Ramat Beit Shemesh, about a forty minute bus ride from Jerusalem. In the morning we study Gemara skills and learning in depth. In the afternoon my classes are.

I may have thought the Yavneh day was long, but it was only preparation for my being in Israel. I wake up every morning around 7:15 for Shacharit which is followed by my morning classes; Gemara skills and in-depth learning until lunch.  After a long afternoon break, Mincha and afternoon shiur, where I'm studying Hilchot Shabbat, Melachim, Jewish Philosophy, Dating and Marriage, and Science and Torah, we have dinner and our nighttime learning until about 9:30pm.

I might have worried about the level of Hebrew I was at coming into the program but it turns out, that I am able to get around. A big part of that is because of the Hebrew staff at Yavneh. "Thank you."

The holidays upon us, these last few weeks have been very exciting and unlike any others I've ever experienced.  Unlike any other holiday in Israel, the country observes two days of Rosh Hashanah.  Not only were the students a major part of the davening, but a large part of the community, which has built up around the yeshiva, also joined our services, enriching my experience.  Minutes after Yom Kippur ended, people began building their sukkah's ourselves included, each of us building our own sukkah on our balcony.

In Israel, it is a never ending cycle. When one holiday ends, everyone prepares for the next.

Chag Sameach to all!
