2010 Continuum of Care Awards Announced: Total $1.41 Billion

On Wednesday, the U.S. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan awarded the 2010 Continuum of Care grants that fund a wide variety of programs from street outreach and assessment programs to transitional and permanent housing for individuals and families experiencing homelessness. The renewal grants total $1.411 billion and will keep nearly 7,000 local homeless assistance programs around the country operating in the coming year.

"As Opening Doors details, there is much we can do to move the needle through better coordination and targeting of existing homelessness and mainstream resources," said USICH Executive Director Barbara Poppe. "The Continuum of Care awards are essential components of this work."

HUD's Continuum of Care grants provide permanent and transitional housing to people experiencing homelessness as well as services including job training, health care, mental health counseling, substance abuse treatment and child care. Continuum of Care grants are awarded competitively to local programs to meet the needs of their homeless clients.
