Dear Sweet Yogis & Yoginis,
Mother May I?

The sun never says to the earth,
You owe Me.

A love like that,
it lights the Whole Sky"~Hafiz

(Maybe even yourself!)

We look forward to seeing you soon at Om Sweet Om.

Love and peace and more love,

Gail & Lisa

Satsang with Lisa

Mother's day is fast upon us and as I walked today through the woods, my thoughts turned to this planet, the mother of us all. My eyes filled with an array of vivid greens, My nose with flower essence and the musky scent of damp earth and wood. I followed the path down to the Sound where the tide was high. There the water was clear, tempting my toes to dip in. And my heart swelled with joy as I watched and laughed as my dog Rita swam with gusto after her ball. A familiar thought came dancing like a melody; 'what a wonderful world'. Yes, we are surrounded by beauty of all kinds on this earth: Often powerful and transcendental beauty.

"When I admire the wonders of a sunset or the beauty of the moon, my soul expands in the worship of the creator." ~Mahatma Gandhi

This shift in awareness, this expansion into an awareness of something greater than ourselves is what our yoga is all about. It is actually Tantra; which loosely stated is the practice of finding the divine, or blissful in the mundane. In plain English it is the practice of using our very lives to perceive the spirit/life force within or to experience what it means to be alive. In affect it is connecting to love.

"Love is a fruit in season at all times, and within reach of every hand" ~Mother Theresa

What gets in the way of living from a loving place most, if not all, of the time, if it is so readily available to us? How do we get stuck and disconnected? Although the reasons seem to be many and varied, all of the stresses and problems of modern life, the pace, technological bombardment etc. Upon close examination, the wisdom of the yoga sutras would say that we are living in a state of avidya/ignorance as to who and what we really are. We are generally trapped in a false awareness of our separateness, which renders us fearful and hardened. When we harden our hearts we find little peace in our lives.

"If we have no peace, it because we have forgotten that we belong to each other." ~Mother Theresa

How is it then that we come to this place of peace, and love, and softness and connection, one might wonder? The answer is deceptively simple: Practice.

It is through regular yoga practice that one makes inroads into the inner workings of our process. As awareness is cultivated/heightened we gain greater clarity as to how we show up to others and ourselves. Seeing this then leads, two steps ahead one step back, to choosing how to be! And that is truly liberating. It is a gift. Happy Mother's Day everybody.

'Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it." ~Rumi

It happens all the time in heaven

It happens all the time in heaven,

And some day

it will begin to happen

Again on earth -

That men and women who are married,

And men and men who are

Lovers,

And women and women

Who give each other

Light,

Often will get down on their knees

And while so tenderly

Holding their lover's hand

With tears in their eyes,

Will sincerely speak, saying,

"My dear,

How can I be more loving to you;

How can I be more

Kind?" ~Hafiz

Asanas/Posture of the month:

Mayurasana/Peacock pose
Tao Porchon-Lynch

In Hindu lore the peacock is a symbol of immortality and love. How very perfect that this is Tao Porchon-Lynch's signature pose! She is everlasting love;-)

To practice this pose;
Begin on hands and knees. place your hands on the mat facing backward (for some people hands will face out to the sides, depending on how the elbows bend). and about 4-8 inches apart. Bend the elbows back and into your abdomen just below the rib cage. Place your chin near or on the floor and begin to lift your knees and feet off of the floor eventually extending the legs. Inner rotate the legs to keep them strong and engaged. Engage the back body and lift the chin away from the floor. If there are any wrist or elbow problems or pain this pose should be avoided. A gentle modification would be to be on hands and knees with the hands facing backward. Breath there and gently stretch the wrists by bring the butt toward the heels.

Physical benefits:

Strengthens the wrists and forearms. Tones the abdomen. Strengthens the back torso

Spiritual benefits:

Freedom, flight and balance!

Yogis of the month
Jesse (9) and Emma Goldblatt (8)
Goldblatt Girls In the picture above Jesse and Emma are standing in the center of a mandala that they drew on their driveway in sidewalk chalk. Jesse, in 4th grade, and Emma Goldblatt ,in 2nd grade, are life time yogis! They have the good fortune to be born to a family that includes a number of yogis including Mom Sarah Goldblatt long time yogini and new teacher, grandfather Sy and grandmother Shelly.
Jesse and Emma came to Om Sweet Om as babies really, 2 and 3 respectively, when Sarah brought them to the mommy and me yoga with Michelle at the old studio they both recall. And they really never stopped. Whether doing yoga with Mom in their own yoga room or taking classes with Lisa at Om Sweet Om Yoga. Jesse and Emma really love their yoga practice. Jesse likes how the poses stretch out her body. Emma finds her peace in yoga, as the poses calm her body and mind and bring her happiness. (I swear these are their own words!)
Jesse says that she and her Grandma are very spiritual and yoga brings them to that place where all of their worries seem to disappear.
Jesse's new favorite posture/asana is handstand. Emma loves them all. Emma finds yoga to be therapeutic.

Hubs of Freedom
Sunday, May 20th 1:30-4:00 pm
$60
Shoulders & Hips - Hubs of Movement Keeping our joints strong and supple makes our bodies more tolerant of the stresses of daily living. The shoulders and hips are the hubs of movement to move in yoga asana, and keeping these hubs free is critical to joint and bone health. Nerves in neck and shoulder connect to our brain as sensory nerves from the heart, so taking care of neck and shoulders improves circulatory function and general health. Hip flexors, extensors and rotators add mobility to walking, so freedom in the pelvis can decrease issues in the knees, feet and back. Maintaining strength and flexibility in your hips and shoulders improves everyday life, and lessens injury by keeping joints, ligaments and muscle mobile. Creating balance in the hubs of movement for the torso creates ease and strength in the body. Join Cora for fun ways to open shoulders and hips! Sthira Sukham Asanam - Asana is ease and stability. * Create supple strength in shoulders, spine & hips * Develop awareness to align the subtle body * Build a foundation of power & support

Flying Floating and Handstanding
A Fun-filled exploration of Vinyasa and Arm-balances
One of the greatest challenges of the Ashtanga flow is the vinyasa. In this class David will break the vinyasa down into its components. He likes to refer to this as: "The Physics of Flight". The class will also explore the elements of handstands and arm-balances.
This will all be done through the avenue of partner work. There is always plenty of laughter and fun as well as a depth of information in this class. All levels may attend even if you have never done a handstand before. Alternatives are always given.

Saturday, 4:00-5:30

Breath, Bandhas and Pranayama

Exploring the Mantra of Ujjayi and the Mysteries of Energy Locks
In Sanskrit, Man means Mind and Tra means to Free or Deliver. Therefore the word Mantra means to Free the Mind. There are many mantras in yoga such as Om, Hare Krishna, Om Namo Shivaya and a plethora of others. In Ashtanga Yoga the mantra is the sound of our breath: Ujjayi. There is no other sound more universal than breath. It is not tied to language or culture and is "chanted" from the first moment of birth. This class will focus on the mantra of ujjayi within asana practice as well as during pranayama. In addition to breath work the class will also explore the invisible world of Bandhas. We well attempt to gain greater understanding of these subtle yet powerful tools through interactive discussion as well as a series of practical exercises.

Sunday September 30th, 9-11:00

Nadi Shodana/A guided tour

An Introduction to the Intermediate Series of Ashtanga Yoga
Students should have a regular practice of the First Series in order to attend this class. There will be an introductory discussion of the dynamics inherent to the Second Series. David will then lead the class through a portion of First Series acting as a springboard into as much of the Second Series as seems appropriate. There will be a variety of options given for each posture in order to allow multiple approaches.

Sunday, 1:00-3:30

Ashtanga's Greatest Hits

Curious about some of the more intricate or advanced asanas but have felt intimidated by them or uncertain about how to approach them in your practice?
Then this class is for you!
David will take the group on a special guided tour of select asanas from the Primary, Intermediate and even from the Advanced Series of asanas. If you are not familiar with the more challenging postures there is no need to be scared of them! David has designed the class for students of all levels to attend. He has an amazing ability to break down the essence and energetic foundation of any asana to allow practitioners of all levels to feel comfortable and confident when exploring realms of the practice that they find most challenging. There are always plenty of safe and sensible alternatives offered so that the student may utilize the most comfortable approach for their particular level. David's classes are always full of valuable information as well as plenty of laughter and joy.

Sunday, 4:00-5:30

Eight limbs and daily life

How does this practice apply within the context of daily living?
Underlying the mysterious and complex philosophy of Patanjali's Yoga Sutras there is a truly profound simplicity that may be applied within the context of our daily lives. This class will discuss the Eight Limbs of Ashtanga Yoga and explore their applications within our day-to-day life. What is the use of Philosophy without real application? We may memorize quotations or stanzas from great writings but unless we can apply them within our life they are merely words spoken rather than knowledge realized.

Purna: meaning full, whole, also complete, and in that completeness, perfect

As Georg Feuerstein states "A characterization of ultimate Reality which is inexhaustible and integral.

Lisa's Recipe of the month:

Sautéed asparagus, chard and shitakes
mmmmmmm I am eating asparagus almost every day while it is in peak season! I particularly like the fat ones. Among other health benefits asparagus is a natural diuretic .

Ingredients:

1 lb of asparagus ( I like the fat ones;-)
1 bunch of chard
6 shitake mushrooms
1-2 tablespoons of tamari sauce
1 teaspoon of fresh grated ginger
sea salt and pepper to taste
Instructions:
Clean the asparagus removing the bottom inch or so and discarding.  Cut in one inch pieces.
Clean the chard and cut in inch strips the again in half. Use stems too! (they are delicious)
clean and slice shitakes in cubes.
In a wok or large skillet
Place 1-2 tablespoons of coconut oil over medium heat
stir-fry asparagus first for 5 minutes
Then add chard and shitakes
Stir and add sea salt and tamari sauce and ginger
Cover and cook for 3 more minutes or until asparagus is tender (stir occasionally)
May be served over any grain.
Eat and Enjoy!
