Dear Sweet Yogis & Yoginis,
Holiday Season 2011
Celebrate!
"The more you praise and celebrate your life, the more there is in life to celebrate." ~Oprah Winfrey
The earth turns and the days and weeks go by with such velocity that it all seems like a great big blur! Fortunately we humans have devised joyful ways to stop and smell the roses and appreciate the gifts of our existence. We call them HOLIDAYS and they are here! The Holidays, or holy/days, essentially remind us of what is most precious, even sacred, in our lives. The simple pleasures, health, happiness, home and hearth, and at the very heart of it is all is connection. Connection with our families, friends, colleagues, our community and of course ourselves.
Here at Om Sweet Om Yoga we enthusiastically welcome the opportunity to celebrate connection of all kinds! Connection is what we are all about! It is our last name! (You may recall one of the meanings of the word yoga in Sanskrit is connection.)
It is through the continued practice of yoga that we come to greater awareness of all the connections that make up who we are and the life that we live.
"Yoga means union - the union of body with consciousness and consciousness with the soul. Yoga cultivates the ways of maintaining a balanced attitude in day-to-day life and endows skill in the performance of one's actions." ~B.K.S. Iyengar
So whether you celebrate Hanukkah, Solstice, Christmas or Kwanza, or any combination thereof, we wish you all the gifts that love and connection offer. As your dedication to practice grows and the transformative effects become more and more known in your life, we wish for you and yours a holiday season supported by the health of your bodies, calmed by the clarity of your minds warmed by the love in your hearts and lifted by the lightness of your spirits.
We look forward to seeing you soon at Om Sweet Om.
Love and peace and more love,

"Invisible threads are the strongest ties" ~Friedrich Nietzsche

Satsang with Lisa
Into the Light
Playfully you hid from me. All day I looked.
Then I discovered I was you,
And the celebration of That began.
-LALLA
It was a beautiful day in the Garden of Eden, 70 degrees, clear blue sky, white puffy clouds. I asked the man who was securing the harnesses on me, Jed, my brother and his son Hillel, "what do you call this place?" We stood atop a high plateau at the edge overlooking a lush valley and on the other side another high plateau. The man said completely straight-faced, "The Garden of Eden." Whoa! I felt an awesome energy. Just another mind-blowing moment in Israel.
Then the man asked, "Who is going first?" The boys leaped up scrambling to get in front of each other. Fortunately for everybody in order to meet the weight requirement they would be harnessed together to zip along the world's second longest zip-line across the valley. Then me, and finally my brother.
The boys went whooping, big smiles as far as one could see. As they disappeared from view I grew increasingly anxious. (It had to be a 400ft drop!) You might even say borderline petrified.
I turned to my brother and said "Moshe I'm scared." He looked me in the eyes, and he saw it was true. He had seen that look before. We had seen it in each other through many a tough time as kids.
"I want to do it, but I am really scared." I reiterated.
"But, you're going to do it anyway, Right Lis? Just like you have always done.
My heart opened and I breathed deep. "Yes, I am."
I almost cried as I returned to my biggest self. What a relief. It felt so good to be back again, even after such a brief absence. (Strange how every disconnection feels like an eternity.)
In that moment, the reunion, I remembered love. Love vanquished fear.
Fully empowered, I went for it.
The ride was thrilling, yet surprisingly peaceful, floaty.
I felt like a cloud with eyes of light and a heart as big as the sky.
Divine.
And the celebration of That continues.

Asana/Posture of the month: Salabasana/Locust Pose
Begin lying on the belly. (You might want to put a blanket under the hips if your hipbones are pronounced or you are practicing on a particularly hard floor.) Inner rotate the thighs and bring the big toes or ankles to touch or at least no wider than hips distance apart. Arms are along side the body palms face up. Press backs of hands into the floor and lifts the head, shoulders, heart, feet, knees and legs up off or the mat. Feel the shoulder blades come in toward each other and move down the back and feel the legs inner rotate and lift up and away from the body.
This pose seems simple but is deceivingly active and challenging.
Physical benefits: This pose is excellent for strengthening the muscles of the spine, buttocks and back body including the hamstrings and calves. It relieves back low back pain and digestive problems.
Spiritual benefits: salabasana is a mild backbend and heart opener. It relieves stress and lifts the spirits.
"It is one of the most beautiful compensations of this life that no man can sincerely try to help another without helping himself." ~Ralph Waldo Emerson

Eka/One:
Eka means one, the number one and in the form of Ekam refers to the oneness of G-d. I found it very interesting that there is a very similar word/meaning in Hebrew - Echad. Leading one to the conclusion that there really is only ONE!
