Dear Sweet Yogis & Yoginis,

"Waiting for the fish to bite or waiting for wind to fly a kite.  Or waiting around for Friday night or waiting perhaps for their Uncle Jake or a pot to boil or a better break or a string of pearls or a pair of pants or a wig with curls or another chance.  Everyone is just waiting."  ~Dr. Seuss

"How much of human life is lost in waiting?"~Ralph Waldo Emerson

Omnibus April Fools/Is it Spring yet????

Well, the weather outside is still frightful, but stoking our inner fire is so delightful. And we at Om Sweet Om Yoga are at it everyday!  Far be it from us to wait for the sun, we create our weather from the inside out, finding and cultivating our inner light and shining it out into this wonderful and worrisome world. We invite you to join us and bask in your inner rays. And we offer so many ways to find your inner beach: Classes, kirtan, workshops and most important of all the warmth of community to open your heart.

We look forward to seeing you soon at Om Sweet Om.

Love and peace and more love,

Gail & Lisa

P.S. We're waiting

5 Flavours of Health by Cora Wen

Cora Wen

Cora Wen will be visiting Om Sweet Om

May 20th-22nd for a weekend immersion called Yin, Yang, Yum (see details under workshops or on our website)

Traditional health sciences of India and China share many similar concepts. Ayurveda, the ancient tradition of India, is usually translated as "science of life"/ Chinese philosophy and social structure are integrally related to the harmony of body and spirit.

Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine see  these concepts as instructional, rather than scientific, and aimed at enhancing life.  Both  systems  focus on balancing Energy for optimum health.

In Chinese medicine the concepts of Yin and Yang and Five Elements have a strong influence, along with the internal organ systems (Zangfu).

In Ayurveda, the total system is complex, with a dominance of three Dosha(tridosha): kapha, pitta, vata (vayu). These are described in stages of transformation rather than physical structures and functional organs.

Many herbs used are similar an

d their healing actions  are described in overlapping terms. The results from treatments of Ayurvedic and Chine

se medicine reveal one must look at  underlying issues to treat a whole person. These issues can manifest

physically through pain or poor health.

India and China share  traditional ideas; Chinese  describe conditions of excess and deficiency, while  Ayurveda  depicts excitation or disturbance (vitiation), and sluggishness of the doshas.

Taste groups are similar in both systems.

Ayurvedic: sweet, sour, salty, pungent/spicy, bitter and astringent

Chinese: Sweet, Sour, Salty, Pungent/Spicy, Bitter and Bland

The next time you crave a certain taste, notice what is going on in your life. Perhaps that sugar craving is for more sweetness (Sukha)

in your life, or salt to soften difficulties (Dukkha) you might be experiencing.

Whether the goal is to balance Chi (life force) or just heal a cold or allergies, we can benefit from this type of wholistic medicine physically, emotionally, and mentally.

Ayurvedic Tastes

Sweet strengthens, heals and purifies blood

Sour is digestive, expels wind  and gathers waste

Salty purifies, relaxes and clears digestive system

Pungent/Spicy increases digestive power and purifies

Bitter improves and reduces secretions

Astringent cleans impurities and reduces moisture

Chinese Tastes

Sweet nourishes, tonifies and relieves pain.

Sour absorbs and controls secretions

Salty softens and  treats constipation

Pungent/Spicy promotes circulation and invigorates

Bitter clears heat and fire, and removes dampness

Astringent is similar to Sour

Bland removes dampness

Asana of the Month

Parvrtta Uttkatasana/Revolved Chair

Chair Twist with Sadie Nardini
Sadie Nardini in revolved chair will be visiting us for a weekend immersion May 6th-8th

Begin in Tadasana. As if you were to sit in an imaginary chair, inhale and bend knees deeply and sit your butt back shifting your weight into your heels. Feel the thighs and sits bones moving in toward each other. Lengthen the pubic and tailbone in and down. With the foundation of the pose set , inhale and lift the arms up ultimately overhead and the upper chest lifts up as well accentuating the extension of the thoracic spine. As you exhale knit the front ribs in and draw the navel back and in.

Adding the Twist: Take a breath in and on the exhale bring your hands to heart center and twist to the right bringing the left elbow to the outside of the right knee. Press knee and elbow together to turn the front of the body to the right. Keep the left knee and hip in line with the right. If you can get the shoulder to the outside of the knee you may enjoy dropping the left hand down to the floor while lifting the right arm up. Eventually you may like to bind the arms around your back.

Modifications: If you are pregnant or have other challenges that hinder the spinal extension and rotation in this pose, you may enjoy bringing your left hand to the right knee and lifting the chest while twisting and taking the right arm straight back behind you.

Physical benefits: Revolved chair pose is a strengthening pose for the legs, glutes and core. It is also extends and rotates the spine which again works the core and back muscles while massaging the abdominal organs, liver and kidneys ridding them of toxins and replenishing with fresh nourishing fluids.

Spiritual benefits: This pose is both grounding and liberating. The lower portion of the body; the feet, legs and hips remain firmly established, steady and connected to the earth, while the upper portion extends and rotates upward in effect lifting away from the earth extending  upward toward the heavens finding freedom.

Pranayama and Restorative Class

The fourth limb of yoga is pranayama.  Yogic breathing exercises are the natural outcome of mastering poses.  Asana practice confers a flexible body, calm nerves, and mental steadiness. Yoga becomes the best antidote for being burnt, being out-of-sync with your own life rhythm, or fluctuating back and forth between being anxious or depressed. Yoga teaches techniques that are simple, safe, and effective.  Today's class will cover a sequence of poses that will relax and renew. Supine breath awareness, as well and digital pranayama basics will be covered. If you want to leave with peace of mind, come to this class.

June 5th

Sunday, 12:30-3:30

Gabriel Halpern

Yoga, Aging and Inner Beauty

Yoga has its own spin on what keeps a person beautiful inside and out: aging begins with deficiency rather than years.  The practice offers sage advice, rules for living and techniques to fend off deficiency. Gabriel's workshop explores poses and sequences that strengthen the immune system, the body's most resilient and adaptable organ.  Yoga asanas will be explained, demonstrated, instructed and corrected.
