Dear Sweet Yogis & Yoginis,

"A smile is the light in the window of your face that tells people you're at home. "~Anonymous

"People are like stained-glass windows.
They sparkle and shine when the sun is out,
but when the darkness sets in,
their true beauty is revealed only
if there is light from within."
~Elisabeth Kübler-Ross (1926 -)

Enlighten your load!
As the year comes to an end, and the holidays descend, and the days get shorter, and our to do lists get longer, we can find ourselves feeling stressed.  It may come as a surprise to learn that stress comes from good things, like holidays and vacations, as well as other less desirable things like traffic or crowded department stores. Doing too much or the old cliché "burning the candle at both ends" is a recipe for stress.  With stress come unpleasant feelings like dissatisfaction and irritation, sometimes anger and often exhaustion. Stress robs us of our energy, life force and innate joy. Like a black hole, stress swallows up our light leaving us feeling depleted and dark.  The good news is that it is easy to remedy! All you need to do is breathe! Breathe and the knots begin to loosen and you will lighten up. Our yoga brings us to our breath and like a guru guides us into the light. We at Om Sweet Om Yoga understand the sanctuary that yoga practice provides. No matter how busy/stressful life becomes, we know that we will find relief on our mats.  It is there that we soften into breath. It is there that we move away from attachment to past and future and arrive in the moment open to receive the gifts of the present.  It is there that we see the light and wake up to who we truly are and what we are here to do. Love each other.

"Love is not consolation. It is light."
~Friedrich Nietzsche

So whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukah, Kwanza, Solstice or any combination thereof, we at Om Sweet Om Yoga wish for you and yours a holiday season supported by the health of your bodies, calmed by the clarity of your minds, warmed by the love in your hearts and lifted by the lightness in your spirits.

Happy Holidays Everybody!

P.S. In the spirit of giving inspired by the season, Gail and Lisa will be offering a special gift of themselves, a 15-minute private consultation to address any questions that you might have about your practice.  See the front desk for times and sign up.

We look forward to seeing you soon at Om Sweet Om Yoga.

Love and peace and more love,
Gail & Lisa

"So many gods, so many creeds;
So many paths that wind and wind,
While just the art of being kind
Is all the sad world needs."
~Ella Wheeler Wilcox (1850-1919)

Asana of the Month
Parvritta Trikonasana/Triangle Forward Bend

Parvritta TrikonasanaStand in Tadasana/Samastthi.

Step the right foot back and turn the toes to the right and the left toes to the right as well so that both feet and hips are squared (i.e. face the same direction). Heel to heel alignment ultimately or a little wider to find balance. Right foot is forward, both legs are straight, lift your left arm and lengthen the spine as you reach forward bringing the left hand (ultimately to the floor) or to a block on the outside of your right foot. Place your palm on the block or the floor, in hale and lengthen the spine and on the exhale turn the right shoulder up and twist in the mid and upper back keeping the hips level and steady.  You may lift your right hand up toward the sky. Press into the back heel and the big toe mound of the front foot for stability. Keep your gaze down if you find balance challenging. Eventually turn the gaze to the side following the twist and ultimately let the gaze follow the top hand. This a challenging pose because is not just a twist but also a balancing pose. So be sure to ground into the feet and stay with your drishti or focus as you turn your torso.

Physical benefits: Revolved Triangle is a twist and a balancing pose. The twisting is great fro massaging the internal organs and squeezing out old fluids and sending fresh fluid in. It helps to strengthen in the legs. When performed gently this is a great pose for sciatica and piriformis syndrome as it stretches the sacrum and sides of the legs.

Spiritual benefits: All twists invigorate the body and the mind. Twisting resolves dullness and sloth leaving one feeling a renewal in energy and radiance.

Satsang with Lisa

This one goes out to anyone who has ever dreamed a dream or planted a seed, to anyone who has lived for that dream and nurtured that seed and to anyone who never gave up. Here is a story to keep your dream alive and your seed growing into fruition.

Thirteen years ago I was very pregnant with my son Jed and had the unique opportunity to pose for a book on pregnant nudes. Alexa Garbarino, professional photographer and artist,  began the project just around the time that Demi Moore appeared pregnant and naked on the cover of Vanity Fair magazine. Alexa was looking for models.  I explained to her that though I was no Demi Moore, I was interested. She showed me all of her amazing pictures and each one was more beautiful than the last, celebrating the miracle of pregnancy and the expression of the divine goddess within each woman differently and perfectly. On a NYC roof top dancing, in a swimming pool underwater, in a stairwell, on the Brooklyn Bridge! I agreed to do it.

On a cold and grey February morning, I led Alexa through the reeds to a secluded spot on the Sound. There with my great big 9-month belly I began to practice and she to shoot.  It was exciting and exhilarating to share in the creative energy of this special project. The result was a wondrous picture and experience that I will treasure always. Over the years I heard from Alexa on occasion. I learned that after years of trying she too had conceived, and brave woman that she is, posed at 4AM in Time Square!!!  There were holiday cards with her family.

And then fast-forward 13 years. I receive an invitation to a book launch party for Alexa and the book, Ripe! She had done it! Due to the unconventional subject matter of the book and the repressed attitudes in this country it took nearly 20 years. But she prevailed. The seed had come to fruition.  RIPE is a reality, filled with100 women and their stories, 185 pages of brilliant beauty and power. The party was Friday night and many of the models were there, all with their tale to tell and proud to have had the honor to contribute and in a small way bless this seed that Alexa had sown and tended with such tenacity, grace and courage.

With the year coming to a close and a new one about to begin it seems to me fitting to consider this inspirational story.  For now, as we come to the winter solstice and begin to move into the light, is the perfect time to develop clarity about our dreams and what seeds we have sown in our lives that require nurturing. The ability to manifest, or make things appear, is not magical in the accidental or unintentional sense. The ability to manifest is real and magical and requires tremendous and sustained effort, clarity and focus. It requires passion and courage and sheer determination. The road may not be smooth, nor straight, but be inspired, filled with spirit, life force, by those who have come before you, like Alexa. And never give up as if your life depends on it, because, to live in your truth, it does.

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlighten about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do.... As we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same, As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others." ~Marianne Williamson

word of the month
Guru
Guru literally means: dispeller of darkness. A guru is a teacher or spiritual guide, one who leads another from darkness to light. The guru sees what the student does not and with love and compassion leads the student to see as well. One feels a special connection and gratitude to the guru who has shown them the way out of darkness and into their own light. It is a great gift. Never forgotten.

Recipe of the month
Carrot Cashew Miso Spread

From Terry Walters  "Clean Start"

Ingredients

2 large carrots peeled and sliced into ½ inch pieces

¾ up raw cashews

1-cup vegetable stock

2 tblsps light miso

Toasted ivory and/or black sesame

Place carrots and cashews and vegetable stock into pot and heat to medium and cook until carrots are cooked through.

Remove from heat and, using a slotted spoon place cashews and carrots into food processor. In small separate bowl, measure out ¼ cup of cooking liquid and dissolve miso in it.  Add bowl to processor/blender and process until smooth. Serve topped with sesame seeds, or refrigerate in airtight container for up to 4 days.

This spread is delicious on rustic breads, crackers and even with crudités! For a festive change use with appetizers instead of hummus. Enjoy!
