Dear Sweet Yogis & Yoginis,

Solstice 2010
enLighten up!

"Life is a pure flame, and we live by an invisible sun within us." ~Thomas Browne

"In winter I get up at night And dress by yellow candle-light. In summer quite the other way I have to go to bed by day." ~Robert Louis Stevenson

Monday June 21st is the Summer Solstice which means it is the first day of summer (Yay!) and longest day of the year, (that is of course in the northern hemisphere). Here at Om Sweet Om it is also the beginning of our summer schedule. Please take notice we have made some changes: added some, removed some, and switched some around. Enjoy! It is all good.
Spiritually speaking, the Solstice is a time to live in the light. It is a time to invite the abundant light in to reveal and heal what has been concealed.

"Be Like the flower , turn your face to the sun." ~Kahlil Gibran

It is a time to align, focus and magnify the light of solstice to fortify us to keep on the path to greater awareness, to recommit to our truth, and to send off love and light into this world.

Looking forward to seeing you soon at Om Sweet Om Yoga

Love and peace and more love,
Gail & Lisa

"If there is righteousness in the heart, there will be beauty in the character. If there is beauty in the character, there will be harmony in the home. If there is harmony in the home, there will be order in the nation. If there is order in the nation there will be peace in the world." ~Confuscious
Asana/Posture of the Month
Utthita Parsvakonasana/Extended Side Angle

uttita parvsFrom warrior II with the right foot forward, heel to heel alignment and the feet a legs distance apart.  Place your right hand palm to the floor or a block on the pinky toe side of your foot, fingers face forward like the right toes. Drop the left arm down and bring it around and up so that the arm extends over the head and the left ear and bicep are approaching each other. Rotate the chest to the left and feel a long diagonal line from the outer edge of your back foot  through your left finger tips keeping the spine and back leg and top arm in one line. Relax your left shoulder away from your left ear. Keep a deep bend in the right knee forming a right angle so the knee is directly over the ankle. Send energy into the back leg so that you are not collapsing into the front leg. Keep the torso lifting and opening preventing it from resting on the front leg. There is so much going on physically in this pose it is important to remain focused and to breath deeply exploring the all of the mini movements and adjustments created by breath. This adds a deeper understanding of the pose.

Physical benefits - This posture works the hamstrings and the quadriceps of the front leg and in so doing it strengthens the knees and ankles. Utthita Parsvakonasana also provides a nice stretch in the groin. The muscles of the torso are also working to rotate, extend and hold the pose .This helps to tone the waist and hips. BKS Iyengar says that this pose relieves sciatic and arthritic pains and also increases peristaltic activity and aids elimination.

Spiritual benefits - Utthita Parsvakonasana is a standing posture, which primarily works the 1st chakra and then the 2nd chakra. The effect is grounding. Leaving one feeling a sense of steadiness and connection to the earth, the body.

Satsang with Lisa
I went to the movies last weekend and saw a wonderful little film called "City Island". It is a small jewel of a film, well acted, sweet, funny and it touched my heart. It moved me because it was about the importance of authenticity in life, (a subject dear to me heart). It is about what happens when you have secrets from yourself and others, why you keep those secrets, and how that manifests in life. The exploration of the subject of living in truth as opposed to pretense is a fascinating subject and a reflection of the human experience . As the saying goes 'Art imitates life".

"The truth is the only thing worth having, and, in a civilized life, like ours, where so many risks are removed, facing it is almost the only courageous thing left to do." ~E.V. Lucas

Living authentically, that is feeling connected heart and mind, body and soul to the life that you are living is what we all long for. Yet we all struggle at times with facing up to our truths and instead retreat or disconnect and seek comfort in ways that lead to more disconnection and ultimately suffering or dukkha.

The lack of authenticity in a life can be evidenced by degree for example by the dissatifaction one feels in their life as well as the discord they experience in their relationships. And conversely, one who feels authentic in their life will experience greater satisfaction and enjoy more harmonious relationships.

It makes sense then that Patanjalis yoga sutras (Book II sutra I) encourages us to accept suffering/pain rather than run from it or feel ashamed. It is understood that suffering like everything else in life is transitory and thus is in and of itself an opportunity to motivate us to continue to practice and move toward positive change.

"There is no coming to consciousness without pain" ~Carl Gustav Jung

Through regular yoga practice we learn that everything that comes our way is fertile ground and workable. We build strength and courage, flexibility and stamina to open our hearts in the face of fear. We come to KNOW that living with an heart open is the only way to really LIVE. The other way is not experiencing your life at all. And though we may sometimes retreat. We come back. We recommit. Like the beautiful white lotus flower that grows out of the mud we too must over and over again blossom from our more base nature into our higher selves.  We are all works in progress. We are all beautiful.  And we all start where we are.

Playfully
you hid from me.
All day I looked.

Then I discovered
I was you,

And the celebration
of That began.

Lalla

word of the month
Dukha in Sanskrit means suffering. Mark Whitwell explains in his introduction to T.K.V. Desikachar's book The Heart of Yoga that according to Patanjali dukkha is part of truth and reality and is nothing to be ashamed of. "Everyone has dukkha. It ...serves to wake us up to further clarity and understanding. As Krishnamacharia would say "Thank God for dukkha," which he describes as the "unavoidable motive for practice."" Patangali also reminds us that everything including dukkha is impermanent. Therefore, dukkha helps to motivate one to create positive change in their lives.
