| Pose of the month |
Headstand (sirsasana)- Using the wall or in the center of the room start on your hands and knees. Place your elbows on the mat below your shoulders. Interlace your fingers and place your fists to the floor pinky side down about 6 inches from the wall. Place the crown of your head on the mat wrapping you palms around the back of your head. Curl your toes into the mat and lift your knees off the ground. Walk your feet toward your face keeping your shoulders lifted, and your neck long, eventually feeling your spine along the wall. Tuck you knees into your chest and begin to lift your feet off the ground and up to the wall eventually stretching your legs straight. Keep lifting you shoulders away from your ears, lengthening your neck, and keeping your weight on your arms rather than your head. Only 30% of your weight should be on your head! Breath here for 10 -15 breaths or until you feel you would like to come down. Lower your knees into your chest and feet to the floor with control and take Childs pose for 5-10 breaths.
Physical Benefits- helps to build shoulder strength and a strong neck. Gives the heart muscle a rest as the forces of gravity are reversed and venous blood is returned to the heart. Aids in lymphatic drainage.
Spiritual Benefits- If inversions are new to you; you may find that they bring up a lot of emotion, running the gamut from terror to elation...Moving into fear is a very powerful practice and in the end very empowering. Another beneficial aspect of headstand is that it creates a change of perspective as we literally flip our worldview.
