"I cannot endure to waste anything as precious as autumn sunshine by staying in the house. So I spend almost all the daylight hours in the open air." -Nathaniel Hawthorne

Savoring the autumn sunshine, I, like Nathaniel Hawthorne, long to spend every moment of daylight outside drinking in the changing light and storing it up in my minds eye like Frederick the Mouse for those long gray winter days when the colors are but a memory.

Autumn is a time if reflection. A season when time seems to be fixed and yet fleeting. A time when the very essence of change is in the air, and with it the awareness of the bittersweet nature of our lives. Our yoga practice helps us to develop the strength and flexibility to hold steady within ourselves while flowing with the changing nature of our lives. Through our efforts in practice we learn to breath into places of discomfort, gently and safely exploring where we can afford to let go and move into greater comfort, harvesting a sense of self that is freer and more joyful.

As we harvest the fruits of our efforts over the past year it is natural to reflect upon our yield and upon our efforts. In this spirit, Gail and I feel particularly fortunate this season as we look at the studio and see so much of the dream coming to fruition. Four years in the making and we are getting there!

This season we are very excited to bring you our Fall schedule packed with new and more classes, times and as usual fabulous teachers for every inclination.

Drishti
Drishti is a focal point that the eyes rest upon during asana and meditation. The drishti or focus is directed to a specific place depending upon the asana and does actual aid in alignment and balance by focusing your awareness on one point rather than allowing the eyes to wander. The drishti refers to a soft gaze (never hard or straining) at one point allowing the consciousness to move inward.
Tree pose
Vrikshasana-Tree Pose
Stand in tadasana (mountain pose) tall and erect, drishti straight ahead, eyes focused on a single point. Shift your weight into left leg to begin and lift your right foot up. Place your right foot on to the ankle (toes may touch the floor for balance or not) , or the calf or eventually your inner thigh. Press your standing foot into the floor , press your lifted foot into your thigh and your thigh against your foot. Press your palms together at the heart center in prayer position. Find your inner stillness, draw the awareness inside and breath the arms up over your head . If the shoulders are open then the palms may touch otherwise keep the hands apart. Try 5 breaths to begin and increasing with practice. Repeat on the other side.

Physical benefits- mproves posture and elongates the spine. Opens the groin. Strengthens the knees and ankles. Improves balance and concentration.

Spiritual Benefits- Improves ability to balance in life. Improves inner resolve as well as flexibility of nature. (as all physical benefits have an a cumulative effect off the mat as well as on the mat.)
