Dear Sweet Yogis and Yoginis,

Freedom is the oxygen of the soul. ---Moshe Dayan

Here at Om Sweet Om our summer officially begins with the Solstice and the new summer schedule. Summer Solstice marks the longest day of the year in the northern hemisphere. It is a time that we welcome the light into our hearts and minds and lives, by literally lightening our loads, doing less and "just being" more. It is a time to open up and take in the energy of the sun, enjoying the outdoors, kicking back and relaxing into a different rythym after the busy Spring and end of the school year. Summer offers us the opportunity to find peace in the freedom that a more spacious schedule affords.

There is a connection between peace and freedom. We need the latter to experience the former.
As former President Dwight D. Eisenhower stated;
We seek peace, knowing that peace is the climate of freedom.
At Om Sweet Om Summer really wouldn't be summer without our new schedule. We have made a few changes in class times so please be sure to read it carefully.

Also you may want to check out the schedule on line throughout the Summer as teachers do take vacations and classes may be cancelled or subbed.

Lotus
Kaivalya
Kaivalya describes the state of inner freedom that yoga strives for. It begins as an experience of the self separate from or beyond the body and the mind. The word kevala means "to keep to oneself," and kaivalya is sometimes explained as isolation, distance or aloofness. A person in the state of kaivalya understands the world so well that s/he stands apart from it in the sense that s/he is not influenced by it. . People in kaivalya behave like normal people, but they do not carry the burden of the world on their shoulders. They live in the world, but they are not subject to it. They are not free from sensual perception or free of the body, but they are a bit different. Wherever they happen to be, they are sure of themselves. That is kaivalya.

All religions, arts and sciences are branches of the same tree. All these aspirations are directed toward ennobling man's life, lifting it from the sphere of mere physical existence and leading the individual towards freedom. - Albert Einstein
This year we will be closed on Wednesday, July 4th.

cobra
Bhujangasana-Cobra
Lie on the belly, forehead on the floor. Legs and feet together, buttocks and legs engaged, firm. Place palms on the floor in line with your shoulders or for those more flexible the mid-line of your chest.Simultaneously press your palms in to the floor as you lift your head and heart off the ground keeping the shoulders broad and down away from your ears. Begin to straighten the arms, lifting your heart center forward and up lengthening and arching the spine without crunching in the lower back. Relax your shoulders and face and breathe. Lower down chest chin and forehead to the floor. Repeat 3x

Physical Benefits
Tones the back and the buttocks. Expands the rib cage, chest, and abdomen. Firms the throat. Replenishes the lower back and pelvis with a fresh supply of blood and increases circulation.
Spiritual Benefits
Cobra opens the front of the body especially the 3rd, 4th, and 5th chakras, centers of personal power, emotions, and communication respectively. It is also a deep backbend which helps to lift the spirit. It is particularly helpful when one is feeling down or blue.
