The Rose How did the rose ever open its heart and give to the world all its beauty? It felt the encouragement of light against its being otherwise we all remain too frightened.
-Hafiz

May has brought the warmth of Spring and the blossoms have burst wantonly exposing their willingness to open, inspiring our hearts to do the same. Taking its cue from nature and like the Buddha, the spiritual warrior strives to disarm, unlocking the locks and untying the knots that only we know are there because we installed them, uncovering the tender loving nature that is our true nature. The practice of opening our hearts in the face of whatever comes our way takes courage, diligence, patience and compassion. The challenge is ongoing, as long and winding as the path that we walk each moment of our lives. The reward is a growing wisdom and sense of freedom that comes from not running or retreating into old habits and patterns that no longer serve us. Residing in the true self is ultimately an experience of enlightenment; an experience of love and compassion for all beings. We experience this in moments, very special moments, that with practice grow to comprise more and more of our lives.

At Om Sweet Om we offer many ways to get to that one place. Through yoga, reiki, meditation, kirtan (which was amazing), dance etc you have an opportunity to watch and unfold into the person that you were born to be.

As the Buddha says - Enlightenment comes as a firefly not as a sunset.

Pose of the Month: Bunny Breath: This breath calms and energizes at the same time. It gives you a feeling of relaxed alertness. Use this to also focus your mind and create a calm feeling before the end of the year tests. A great tool to boost your energy as well as enhance your learning.
To do this pose sit on your heels, with hands face down on top of thighs. Take 4 tiny sips of air through your nose and then exhale through your mouth with a great big AHHH! Repeat 4 times.
Svadhyaya--- (fourth of the five niyamas) - self study.
Self study here takes on a couple of meanings. The first is simply observing oneself on the path. How do you respond in a given situation, on or off the mat. Watching ourselves increases awareness of how we show up in life. Self study also refers to the study of spiritual texts such as the Bible, or the Torah or the Yoga Sutras. But this study also extends to any text that leads one to the higher self. So whether that is the poetry of Walt Whitman or a Beethoven Symphony or even sitting on a mountain top watching the sun come up, if you are able to transcend into a higher understanding of self, that is Svadhyaya.
bakasana
Bakasana- (crane/crow pose)
Come into a squat and place hands on the mat about a foot in front of your feet and shoulders with apart. Bend your elbows and bring your knees onto your upper arms or into your armpits. Just making contact with your knees and upper arms is the first step. Feel the bhandhas active, connect to your core and begin to lift the toes off the floor, one at a time and then both at the same time. If you can lift both up bring the toes to touch and see if you can breath, eventually getting up to 5 or more breaths.

Physical & Spiritual Benefits
This posture helps to build core strength and bandha awareness. It builds upper body strength and balance.
Practicing bakasana can connect us with fear and frustration as we work to find balance and not fall onto our faces. Watching our ability to move through these emotions helps us develop confidence as well as compassion.

Time-Tested Beauty Tips
For attractive lips, speak words of kindness.
For lovely eyes, seek out the good in people.
For a slim figure, share your food with the hungry.
For beautiful hair, let a child run his fingers through it once a day.
For poise, walk with the knowledge you'll never walk alone ...
People, even more than things, have to be restored, renewed, revived, reclaimed and redeemed and redeemed and redeemed. Never throw out anybody. Remember, if you ever need a helping hand, you'll find one at the end of your arm. As you grow older you will discover that you have two hands. One for helping yourself, the other for helping others.
-Sam Levenson

Note: this is the complete poem Audrey read to hers sons, Sean and Luca on Christmas Eve 1992. The author, Sam Levenson wrote it for his grandchild.
